Wish I’d done years ago !
I own a 1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty with the 5.4 gas and the 4R100 transmission. I’ve owned it since December of 2003. I only wish I’d done this years ago. 1st , the included hose is 5/16 th I.D. With 3/8th barbs and fluid line I didn’t want to fight trying to get it together so I went to the auto parts store and got a larger hose. Not 3/8 th, but in between 5/16th and 3/8th. 11/32nds. 2nd, do yourself a favor and skip the thread tape and go to the hardware store and get some Master Plumber brand TFE Paste pipe thread compound. ( will not harm seals or valves ). Withstands up to 10,000 P.S.I., temperatures from -50 degrees to 500 degrees. It’s compatible with water, steam, both natural and L.P. gas, oils, fuels and diluted acids. Apply to the threads, assemble and as an added measure let set over night. Note, it never completely dries. 3rd, Derale’s filter is 21 microns. Some people are suggesting a finer micron, such as 15 or even a 10 micron. Transmission fluid is not hydraulic fluid. If it was you could just use any hydraulic fluid. Much like a Limited Slip Differential ( rearend ) that has to have a fiction additive , automatic transmissions have clutch disc that require fiction components in the fluid to operate correctly. According to Derale to fine a micron will filter out these components. Stay with 21 micron. If you have room and want to use a larger filter do your research. I went with a Wix 51515 XP. It’s 5 inches tall , has the same By-Pass Valve Setting ( 8-11 P.S.I. ), same Max Flow Rate ( 7-9 G.P.M. ) and it’s 21 microns. P.S., the hose barb fittings are NOT plastic, they are black anodized aluminum.

Installing one of these external spin-on filter kits into your automatic transmission cooler circuit just may the most valuable move you will make! The “micron rating” of the internal filters in most (if not all) transmissions is horrible, ranging anywhere from 100 to 200 microns. These external filters are down in the 21-micron range and flow at least 7-9 gallons per minute with no restriction. These transmission filter kits are readily available under several brand names. Of the three I have used in the past, this Derale kit is definitely the highest quality.

Just to let everyone know, the filter itself is a very common size, readily available from your local auto parts store under a dozen different brand names, and for about half the price of the Derale filter number 15092. (which BTW is a Champ PH253) So just pick your favorite brand of filter, and tell them you want the exact replacement for a Champion PH253. OR BETTER YET, if you have the space to use a larger filter, then just use the NAPA Gold number 1515, Ford FL1A, Fram PH8A, or whatever brand you prefer. That filter’s specs are better than the smaller ones, PLUS you will have about 3 or 4 times the filter media surface area. And it is such a common number that it will likely be half the price of the small filter. You will have a superior filter for less cost. And if you want really superior filtering, then select a replacement filter with the same flow rate, bypass valve setting, etc but with a much finer micron rating in the range of 15, or 10, or less. (such as WIX 51307, or 57088, etc)

The next time you need to change your transmission’s oil and filter, you will be SO GLAD YOU INSTALLED THIS KIT. It makes it nearly as easy as changing your engine oil and filter. -even with no drain plug on the transmission, all you need to do is: 1. Remove the spin-on filter, place your drain bucket under the mounting plate, start the engine and let it idle until the fluid flow stops, shut off engine. 2. Measure how many quarts were drained, re-fill the trans with the same number plus a small additional amount for the filter. 3. With new filter and replacement fluid installed, run the vehicle until the transmission is fully warmed up, recheck the fluid level, and adjust as necessary.

I've done this procedure now for over 20 years on four different vehicles (all GM) about every 20 to 25 thousand miles. The transmission fluid always stays nice and clean, there are never any visible wear particles or debris in the drain oil (they are all trapped in the filter) and it gives me a lot of peace of mind. I suspect I will never have any transmission issues on any vehicle.

Easy install for my 7.3 diesel.

Top quality kit, I have ordered 4 of these remote filter kits over the past couple years.
For starters, every one has come with black aluminum anodized fittings, not brass, plastic or steel.
If you think they were plastic, yep, about the same weight as aluminum, double check your work.
As far as leaks go, if this leaks when you are done, double check your work and if you can't figure it out, you really need to go to a mechanic (or plumber or your dad) to figure out how YOU screwed it up. It's a dead nuts simple install.
And yes, replace the cheap filter that came with it with a wix.
Enough said!

Bought two of these for two vehicles to add extra filtration on freshly serviced GM transmissions. Was hoping the transmission cooler fitting would fit the transmissions, however they did not. This is very much a universal kit and be prepared to purchase additional cooling line fittings to complete the job right. The barbed hose fittings were anodized aluminum NOT plastic as mentioned by others. Will also have to get creative with mounting locations on a GMT800 Yukon/Burb/tahoe/esky

Not sure why Amazon included ‘warmth’ and ‘sheerness’ in the review options... lol

Anyhow, great option to keep your transmission clean. The stock filter on my 92 HDJ81 isn’t very effective at screening anything out beyond large chunks of metal, having the external filter adds in an extra layer of protection I was looking for, now I can change out the filter every 10k miles or so and keep and keep it clear of any contaminants. The fittings were all metal, so I’m not sure why some people have run into issues with their kits coming with plastic fittings. Installed this along with a 34 row cooler, one less thing to worry about now.

Update: I’ve used thread compound to seal the threads, however this thing leaks no matter what out of the out port on the adapter. I’ve taken it apart and re-applied the compound multiple times now, zero effect (used tape as well, and it was worse with the tape). Updated the review to reflect this.
