    looking for some advice

I’m in the market for 2 stand up paddle boards, which also means I need to figure out how to haul them.

    10-12ft in length

I like the idea of a roof rack because I like the way it would look on the truck.
And have a trifold tonneau which really
Limits the bed rack options without spending a lot of money

I do not want to drill holes or permanently mount the rack so I’m heavily leaning to either the Thule or Yakima rack that clamps onto the truck

My question is for those who have experience with these setups which one works better on a crewmax to haul a 12 ft board?

Or is that even enough room on the roof for them?

    Thanks!

Can’t help much with cab rack experience as I have mine on my shell, but once you figure out the rack itself I recommend checking out the Yakima SUPDawg to hold the boards. Lockable and can hold two boards. It also has a strap to use from the front of the board(s) to your front bumper area to help hold it down. I would think length is fine as long as you position properly and secure it, I’ve hauled 12’ sups on smaller vehicles no problem.

No, I’ve only used Thule and Yakima. The etrailer reviews look great, and one pickup owner said they’re better than the aforementioned. I’ve been looking at no drill cross bars for the roof, not sure we need them yet.

no need to spend the money for a specifc board holder unless you really want to. grab some board rack pads with a couple of tie downs and you'll be fine. just remember. fins forward. fins. forward.

Does that use the bed rail track system?

Don’t think so. It’s a 12’ SUP only being supported by 5 feet or less, no bueno for the board.

I would suggest doing low over the bed roof rack system with a hitch mounted secondary support that elbows out, and up to carry a little weight from the nose.

I carry windsurf boards and many of my friends haul SUPs, we would never support a board by half it’s length. Very expensive risk to take.

That's funny... Both my SUPs are 11' 6" and I have zero issues. I also hauled them around on my 03' Sequoia with factory roof racks with no problems. Almost every single Tacoma on Maui uses them to haul their big boards with no problems.

I have rhino on my hard cover and I love them. I have never carried paddle boards. We prefer the blow up units instead of the solid units, Kayaks as well.

Just re-read your post again. The ROLA Rack won't work with the tonneau cover. I know mine won't that's why I'm selling my racks.

Or you can do what I do. When I can't find what I want, I build it. Had a rack over my big cap on my 88 GMC. I built is so it was clamped on and went into the holes with the cap. When in doubt

Rhino racks are solid for sure. I could stand on mine without it flexing much at all. But I have not put the SUP on it yet.

It’s ur gear treat it how you want. Any rack will do, I’m just saying don’t cantilever half or less of the board with no support under under the remaining 50%+. It’s not good for the board. It's not rocket science to see how you are structurally loading the board in a way its not supposed to be carried.

I'm looking to get two stand up paddle boards as well. Only difference is i want to store them in a smaller location so i am going with the inflatable ones.

Also debating on getting a set of inflatable ones but live just a couple miles from the water so I’d leave them inflated most of the time unless traveling a little farther out

i mean if we're talking about disposable gear like "inflatable" and sub $1000 SUPs have at it. But If you are serious about your sport, I would not carry around $2000-$3000+ board half assed. Even my short boards i wouldnt cantilever like that. My long board is around 9', it's supported at the fin box, and 2/3rd out off the nose. The other problem with over the roof, is loading it during any kind of wind, and driving highway speeds. With a 12' board, if you're going to use tall bed rack, supplementing support with roof rack would be sufficient, but it would look like scaffolding on your truck

It takes me 5 minutes to load my gear. Keeping it at a manageable height means it can be blowing like hell and still in total control of your equipment. Plus, it's not a leading edge while on the highway.
