Possibly looking Into plasti dip on bumpers and around grill/ badges. I have a magnetic grey 2012 tundra CM.

Anybody have photos of one in this color being done ?

Any issues with fade of the plastidip?

Any idea on approximate cost of doing this ?

    Thanks

Plasti dip can last 1 year before it starts to peel off chrome and needs to be redone. Plasti dip has this metalizer kit it's meant for rims but it's a good color.
I personally never want to deal with plasti dip because of the constant maintenance on it. I think I've seen the chrome bumpers can actually be bought in black primer instead aftermarket.

The website dipyourcar.com has a lot of good videos and info. You can always find discount coupons for their website. Plasti dip anthracite grey is close to MGM.

My buddy had Plasti dipped wheels on his truck for 3 years. Had to touch up 1 wheel 1 time.

I dipped my emblems on my last truck. Lasted for 2 years till I sold it and still looked good.

Don't think they make a black powder coated one for the front. You can wrap them too. Wrap would last a lot longer than plasti dip.

does anyone know how well the bumper covers work or look? this has been suggested to me as well as option instead of the plasti dip...I did all of my emblems, and they turned out pretty good fot it being my first time. next step is the chrome around my grill and then the bumpers, unless I can figure something else out...

    Hi big daddy,

That will probably be the last time I address you as that.

The covers are spendy like 200+ (Per set) and they don’t make them for our year yet. I found a OEM website that sells the black grill, and bumpers. All three for prob around 750. Too much I think for just getting rid of some chrome.

I’d imagine a wrap would be cheaper but don’t know how long it lasts.

Let me know if you dip your stuff post pics .. big daddy.

Sas wow! your truck looks awesome! I love it! I am just getting started with mine...cosmetics like the chrome bumpers bug me...thanks for the tips, I will definitely be giving this a try...ill post pics when I do....

2012TundraWA LMAO, I love when they call me big papa! lol...anyways I noticed the insane prices for the covers were more for the shipping than the actual part...like damn near 3 x's the amount of the cover! just insane! so I'm gonna go with the original plan and plasti dip following Sas' lead...fingers crossed it works out

I did my front grill (2013). Just the inside horizontal bars. Tried doing the whole thing but it was a pain in the ass. Also tried doing the badges and it was a pain in the ass.

I plasti dipped a few parts on my Harley without issue, but the truck just didn’t work out as well. Powder coating is a better option, but it will probably be just as pricey as buying new bumpers.

I used it on my grille and emblems. I think it turned out pretty good.

Mine's dipped in black. Bumper caps, surround, and badges. It's been over a year, badges are still perfect, bumper caps are still good, but the hood bulge has some chips in it. It's not noticable until you get close up, but you can see some tiny spots of chrome showing through.

That’s not a huge deal about the chips on the bulge (although I don’t have one to worry about ) but any chips to bumpers or chrome in general would bother the hell out of me. How many coats did you put on ?

I did 7 light coats on everything, waited 30min in between sprays. Just make sure the cans are warm and it's not too cold or humid out, and shake the hell out of them before each spray.

Yeah I don’t think I could be happy with it lasting a year or so and showing signs of wear. That would bother me . Much appreciated for this. I’m not going to plasti dip . I know me. And me would be irritated .

It's definitely not a permanent solution, but it's a cheap and easy way to cover up the chrome and it just peels off if you don't like it.

I did my bumper ends with plasti dip anthracite grey. Being that it was only $30 in plasti dip to do the front and rear I’m happy with it. I’ll eventually do a more permanent solution but for now it’s close enough color match, and way better than chrome.9A37B916-4EF4-4FEC-8068-252801496595.jpg

Has anyone actually removed the chrome piece around the grill? can it be removed? I haven't looked yet, but i am planning to redo this and when i do it would be a helluva a lot easier to do it OFF the truck than on...LOL

According to youtube, no, it can't. 3rd gens can, but apparently the insert on 2nd gens has to be cut out.

Is it hard to remove the entire grill then? It's all black anyways so the overspray won't hurt that part.

No idea, I have a 3rd gen . The videos I watched on youtube didn't look too difficult, just some bolts and tabs holding it to the hood.
