Replaced center carrier bearing and u joint over the weekend. Put everything back together and runs fine but now I notice about 3-5 drops of trans fluid on the ground after driving. Doesn't look like its leaking when driving or not a lot cause there is no splatter on surrounding area. Its leaking at the bottom of the housing where the yoke goes in. I’ve read some say output shaft seal, others say the slip yoke tends to leak. How hard is it to replace the output shaft seal? Ive looked it up and its under $10 for the seal itself. Do you lose fluid? Mine is an 06 4.7 2wd with a sealed (to my knowledge) transmission so I dont want to lose too much fluid.

Keep your eye on it. They usually stop leaking after a day or two. If not your going to have to replace the seal .

Easy fix, you can get a seal puller fairly cheap or some of these parts places might loan you one . When you get old one out and install new one , take your time and seat it in evenly . Lightly tap outer edge with something that is flat on end and perhaps 3/8 or so in diameter or better yet find something with less diameter as the outer edge of seal like a large socket , most people dont have sockets that large but something similar without sharp edges. Do not hit the rubber seal. Also do not drop your drive shaft and let the yoke hit the ground or anything for that matter and make sure it is clean. Make sure there are no nicks on yoke . Lube it slighty along with the new seal. Slide it in all the way and avoid letting it pull back out and dropping down which can slightly distort the new seal and possibly nick the yoke if it hits the ground .

I have an assortment of PVC couplings and connectors for just this thing.

Yeah , pvc couplings that size are stout enough to tap this thing in and will reduce the chance of damaging the seal. Dont think this will ever happen eing the opening is pretty small with the seal in place but tap lightly so not to shatter the pvc and possibly send some shards into the tail housing .

In my experience it seems there is more chance of it leaking if you remove it than if you dont of hadn't in this case. Not to say it wouldn't have developed a leak otherwise .

When doing my carrier bearing replacement, the flanges would not remove off either end so I ended up cracking only at the double cardan joints. Did every thing from underneath. Suspended the propellor ends with rubber straps from the frame to keep off the pressure. No leaks since doing it 6 months back.

Sometimes if you let the driveshaft hang and put pressure on that seal it well cause it to leak for a bit after reassembly
