I'm looking to get a high clearance bumper but not too flashy... any ideas?

Do you have a pic? I saw the stealth fighter bumpers for the new tundras, and that's what makes me want one. But it need to be a discrete looking one. Nothing too loud or big.

I really like the look of this bumper but I think it is custom made. I was thinking about trying to make one.

I'm on the fence about whether I want to stay stock or not. My truck is two wheel drive, and I hardly ever take it off road because of that.
    Opinions? Stock or mod/aftermarket?

Let me push you back over the fence and tell you to keep it stock and roll that money into another more expensive upgrade to 4.56 gears. Since you are 2wd it will be ‘less expensive’ than a 4wd.

You’ll enjoy the pedal more than the bumper.

I'll have to look into it. I was wondering how bad a 4 wheel drive conversion might be, but a different gearing might be better since I have a V6.

2wd can be a lot of fun in the dirt. Takes some extra skill as a driver sometimes to stay unstuck (especially in sand) but experience is really the only way to learn.

With that said, if you do plan to adventure offroad and you have little/no experience yet, do not go alone. Go with someone who can pull you out if needed. And just go slow...

So if i were you and if I were considering modding for more than just aesthetics:
    1) keep it as is for now
    2) find some dirt well traveled fire roads (that any truck/SUV can travel) and go see what I see. If I like it...
    3) I find a buddy with lots more experience than me, and with a rig that can recover me, I ask that buddy to find us an easy trail that we can try. And go try it. If I still like it...
    4) I lift. Nothing major. Maybe a 3/1. Rinse and repeat #3 several more times with varying degrees of "easy" difficulty. If I still like it...
    5) Tires. I step up to 35"s (and learn about airing down and what a difference it can make). Rinse and repeat #3. If I still like it...
    6) Decision time. If I REALLY like it I consider selling my 2wd and buying a 4wd. At this point you're not seriously invested in the 2wd, and you've made it badass looking (great selling point). Probably would sell easily, all things being equal. And now we're in a 4x4.
    7) Repeat #1-5. And if I'm still liking it...
    8) I consider hi clearance bumpers.

Jumping from 1 to 8 IMHO doesn't buy you much beyond the look. Which is cool if that's what you're after. But if its functionality you're after, you really need to get dirty for a good long while first, before you'll realize the benefit of these bumpers.

FWIW: I've taken my Tundra over things I was POSITIVE would rip the front and/or rear bumper caps off (or at least crush one of the tailpipes). Didn't happen. I'm sure it will someday, but my point is I've been wheeling for a long time in far more capable rigs than the Tundra, have now tried things in the Tundra that have scared me, and I've been fine. I haven't needed hi clearance bumpers (yet) and I'm still having a blast.

Yeah buddy. Those gears will pep things up for you.

The 4wd conversion is $$$. You’d be better off buying a different 1st Gen already 4wd ready.

I hate to admit it, but I live in redneck central Kentucky. I have yet to be off roading in any sense of the word unless bicycles when you're 12 years old counts. I will definitely try it, and look into the gearing.

Hey, we all start somewhere :) Just make sure playing in the dirt suits you before you dump lots of money into mods for that purpose. Saw a guy dump $35k into a Jeep build that could climb the face of El Capitan. Took it offroad exactly once; decided he hated cleaning the dust. Its a mall crusher now. He's happy, but dayum. :D
