No Apple CarPlay? What aftermarket headset?

Interesting... Where did you get the USB harness and face plate mount? I am going to be installing a Kenwood next weekend and want to make sure I have all the parts I need ahead of time. Thanks!

 

Here is the one I used from Amazon, just a simple usb extender. Also considered one from Crutchfield that I think would integrate into one of the extra 12v ports but not 100% sure it fits exactly. I went with the amazon item because I didn’t need 6 feet (didn’t need 3 feet either but shortest they had) and it was less cost.

 

I used an $8 Amazon usb extension for my android auto cable as well and it works just fine. I also put it under the center console lid

 

Yeah I like that location, looks factory plus you can keep phone and wire inside if you want for a cleaner look as well.

 

I love not having the phone cable all wrapped around the shifter and in my way. I didnt ecen realize that there was that small ridge in the console to allow the cable to not be pinched when closed

The finished install looks really nice. Mine looks similar but the ac console now seems a little loose ever since installing the stereo

 

Hmmm....you might check to makes sure all of you retainer clips are there, mine didn’t have any issues.

Not sure exactly how that I did it but I am able to use Apple CarPlay via my factory usb connection below the air conditioning console. I purchased the CRUX SWRTY-61N of Amazon and it had everything included.

Hey guys.
The kenwood stereo that I installed a few weeks back worked fairly well but prompted me to update software. Upon doing so it became frozen so I replaced it with a pioneer 4500nex. I installed it yesterday and had everything working on it except my factory rear view camera wouldn’t come on when I pressed the button while driving. ( it is supposed to do this for the purpose of towing and etc.)

I took the radio back out and began playing around with the wiring to try and figure out how to get this to work and now my rear view camera no longer comes on when I put truck in reverse. All I get is a blank black screen with a small parking lines grid in top left corner of the screen and the sensors will still beep if I am too close to something when backing up. Everything appears to be wired correctly but I am completely stumped, would appreciate any suggestions such as fuse location and etc. Thanks

About the reverse camera ?

 

Did you change any of your wiring while "playing around" with it? The rearview camera will only provide video when in reverse, as the reverse circuit is what provides power to the camera (at least from my research). As for why it doesn't work now, you very easily could have popped a fuse. Would need to know the year of your truck to know what fuse to look for, but the covers on each box (under hood by battery and near driver's side kick panel) will list out what is where.

Supposedly you can shift your truck into reverse while going over 25 MPH to activate the rear camera (transmission stays in neutral), but I still haven't had the cajones to try that...

 

I sounds to me like the reverse camera is engaging when you put it in reverse but you aren’t getting video. So maybe your Video RCA for the camera is not connected correctly?

 

I have the halo9 head unit and i can see the reverse camera any time i push the camera button its on a 19 tundra so i think its always powered

My truck is a 2018 SR5. For some reason I suddenly no longer can get the factory rear view camera to come on. @DCB500, you are correct about the camera engaging in reverse and not getting any video. Regarding the video RCA for camera, there is only 1 wire from aftermarket wiring harness that is labeled for the rear view camera and it plugs into a brown female RCA video input on the back of the pioneer 4500 nex.

 

Since my post from a few days ago I have done the following:


-Completely disconnected the new stereo and removed the aftermarket wiring harness


-temporarily re installed my factory stereo.

Rear view camera came on as soon as I shifted into reverse which led me to believe that the camera is indeed fine and the problem is either with the aftermarket wiring harness, the female RCA input cable ( which is for plugging the wiring from camera into ), or there is something wrong with one of the settings in the stereo.


-Today I installed a new after market wiring harness and I am still having the very same issue when I shift into reverse.


I triple checked my wiring and what has got me the most puzzled is the fact that everything use to work just fine and I don’t understand why the parking gridlines are so small instead of taking up the whole screen even if the screen is black. I will upload a few pics of what I am talking about. Anyone know of any way to test a female RCA video input to make sure that it is still good? Have attempted to factory reset my stereo but each time I have done so it doesn’t appear to work as all settings are still the same. Only difference is the clock and days are reset. As always, I greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks

 

Make sure you are on the right signal type in camra setings

 

If you've double checked your connections, then make sure the settings on the head unit are correct too. Most head units will give you the option to turn off/on the rear cam. My Kenwood has an option to turn off/on if the cam will display when the truck is in reverse. Just check all of those settings and let us know.

 

Since my last my post for the purpose of troubleshooting, I also temporarily installed a 2 year old cheap Jensen head unit from my other car into my truck. It had an input for a reverse camera so I figured if the Jensen worked in my truck then that means that the Pioneer unit is the problem. The reverse camera came on as soon as I shifted into reverse so I immediately returned the Pioneer for a new one.


Today upon receiving my replacement, I took my time to wire everything and paid extra attention to detail to ensure correct wiring. I shifted into reverse and the reverse camera didn’t come on with this new unit either. Rechecked all my wiring and etc and everything was correct and yet once again everything works on the stereo except the reverse camera.


The factory stereo had worked properly all the way up to the time that I replaced it with a Kenwood DMX77. I replaced this Kenwood with the Pioneer 4500 after bricking the unit doing a software update. As a result of the Pioneer 4500 reverse camera not properly working I exchanged it for the Pioneer 4400 and this unit also doesn’t work correctly with factory reverse camera. All 3 other stereo brands that I have recently used in the past month have all worked properly with the factory reverse camera. It appears that for some reason that Pioneer doesn’t work well with 2018 tundra reverse camera and that makes no sense.


@tundraal , yes I have checked all the settings in the head unit relevant to the camera settings and have done so countless times and to my understanding they are all set correctly.


Also, I am using the Crux SWRTY-61N for a wiring harness and is compatible with 2018 Tundra according to both Amazon and Crutchfield. Please continue to offer feedback as anything is appreciated. This really has me beyond frustrated. I am completely stumped.

 

Have you tried another kenwood after the one that you “bricked”?

$450 Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX In Dash Multimedia Receiver with 7" WVGA Clear Resistive Touchscreen Display

Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX and had no issues with the reverse camera on my 2018, but I'll double check the wiring kit I bought from crutchfield as well as my head unit settings and let you know if that Sparks any ideas...

Since this is the second Pioneer that I have purchased within ten days and had the same camera issue with I went ahead and removed the newer Pioneer(4400) and temporarily installed the Jensen stereo from my other car. The factory reverse camera came on immediately just like it had a few days ago upon my taking the first Pioneer stereo out. This has become absolutely mind boggling. I really like the 4400 but I cannot see myself keeping it with these camera issues. At least this allows me to see that my camera is still working and its fuse is not blown, that my wiring harness camera is correct with regards to step down from 12v to 6v, and that my wiring is right. As far as head unit settings, camera view is set to off, backup camera is set to on, second camera input is set to off, reverse gear setting is set to battery. I have toggled back and forth with these settings and still no luck. The only other thing that I can think of is that it could have something to do with the parking brake wire and it being correctly attached. Does grounding it to the chassis or installing a micro bypass have any effect on the back up camera working. Especially since we both have the 4400, any advice that you could offer would be most appreciated. Thank you

 

Does anyone have a link with the descriptions of all the fuses for the 2018 Tundra? I have looked online everywhere and I am trying to find all fuses relevant to camera problem. Thanks

As of now I have been able to get it to work with factory radio, Jensen, and Kenwood and can’t get it to work properly with any of the 3 Pioneer NEX series stereos I attempted or the

$280 Alpine ILX-W650 7" Double DIN Touchscreen Digital Multimedia Receiver with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

A few days ago, I contacted Pioneer tech support and was informed that most likely their stereos weren’t compatible with my OEM backup camera upon their verifying my wiring was indeed correct and the correct settings in the head unit. This sounds hard to believe but actually seemed to make sense. Last but not least, today I took my truck up to Best Buy to let them install it because I am completely over dealing with this situation. They were aware of the problem that I had been experiencing and were quite confident that they would have no issues with this basic install. After 3.5 hours, they also were completely stumped as they experienced the same problem with both the Alpine and Pioneer units. Before leaving I had them try plugging an aftermarket backup camera into each of these stereos and they both worked perfectly which made no sense to them or myself. Pissed bc it seems like I will now have to buy a aftermarket backup camera to have it work with stereo I have chosen when my camera works fine. I have never experienced or have heard of this happening. Oh well, it is what it is

@Nap1970 glad you got it sorted out. It's weird that you have the same config as me, but I had no issues with the backup camera with my Pioneer head unit. Good to know, though.
