Size matters... Kenwood/pioneer ain’t coming with 10 inches and yet cost more money. 10 inch CarPlay with added features always trumps 7 inch bullshit.

I joined to see what is possible
    1. What does the factory GPS antenna do?
    2. Can we run the head unit without a GPS antenna?
3.If we don't have one, can we add one?
    4. If so, how difficult is it? Aftermarket available?

    Edit:
Also, if you have front and rear camera, is there options to record video like a dash cam? Separate accessory?

Can you add a hd tv turner to watch TV? I came across a seicane unit (bad reputation) but they advertised: HD Digital TV (optional function) DVB-T / ATSC / ISDB-T HD TV Turner. Is this possible with Dasaita?

Fair argument there! Another reason I can think of is my wife. I'll use the standard apps... But if she ever gets in I guarantee she'd get lost with it. She'd use the car play function I suppose.

The unit comes with a gps antenna. Just stick it up.under the dash and it will.be fine. The adapter just allows you to use the factory antenna instead

    1. Factory GPS antenna can be used with adapters. I prefer this to the one that comes with the unit since the stock one is outside the cab on top so I would hope it has better reception.
    2. You can, just no navigation will work.
    3. Yes, the unit comes with a generic one you can stick up on the dash.
    4. See above.

There is a "DVR" app for android and it is preinstalled on the tesla style units, not sure about the dasaita. But it is used for the front camera to be used as a dashcam style setup.
There are also USB HD Digital TV OTA tuners. Should work with any android device, including this unit.

The 7" standard pioneer/sony units just look weird in our truck, in my opinion. The radio/dash area makes them look really tiny.

These Dasaita's look good and ka-pow people with a "wow" factor. Everyone who sees it grins ear to ear and comments how cool it looks.

I have a bunch of video apps on the Amazon portion for the kids and eventually will get OBD2 adapter for diags, so I am glad I have the Android OS... but the carplay is what I use the most and it is gorgeous on that screen.

I too am very interested in wireless CarPlay but don’t know that I can live with the factory jbl head unit to wait for it.

In addition to the above answers, tying into the stock GPS antenna gives you responsive accurate GPS-based speedo. I've got bigger tires and never added a Hypertech calibrator to account for the 6% difference, I just look at my android HU's launcher for real speed (it's Tesla style but same as these nice Dasaita's):

    IMG_9421.jpg

You should be able to add a TV tuner, however OTA is dependent on LOS to available channels. Unless you have them nearby with great reception, it would mean a high antenna on your truck (I've been running OTA HD TV antennas in my attic for several years).
    https://www.phoenixautomotiveinc.com/products/car-hdtv-tuner-digital-tv-receiver-automobile-dtv-box

Lastly, I recommend dedicated 4K dashcams that are installed near the roof line (eg; in front of the rearview mirror) to capture plates especially at night so dark performance is important. Put high endurance microSD cards in them designed for dashcams and frequent over-writing.

Ahhhhhh all is right with the world again. This thing owns the tesla unit. Honestly I think it looks better too. Got my normal climate controls back. This thing sounds better, is faster, boots faster, connects to bluetooth and wifi faster. There is only one eq and it works great. The fader works. Bluetooth phone calls sound great. Using car launcher pro and it auto launches pandora with my stations downloaded my music starts immediately. They even added an option to turn down the audio gain on can bus so now the lowest volume is no longer too loud.

Does anyone know of a way to make the unit more flush with the dash layout? Or have any pictures of how much it sticks out?

I've been following this thread recently trying to decide on a headunit. I wanted the Tesla, but the more I read the less interested I am, plus want to keep HVAC manual controls.

The only thing I'm unsure about is how much it sticks out...

    Thank you!

I appreciate you taking the time to share a pic, thank you!!

Yeah, it does seem to be the thing these days, never been a huge fan but fortunately that doesn't look too out of place.

I got an extension cable this time and mounted the mic in the stock location. I added a front cam and its great but i cant seem to find a setting to make it default to mirrored operation. it always seems to come up backwards. anyone know how to do this?

Isn't there a wire you cut on the camera to make it mirrored? I know most have wires to cut for specific parking line layouts or not.

This looks like a good unit. Without reading the entire thread is anything lost with it? i.e backup camera, sensors, nav etc?

Its car launcher pro using the leather theme modified a little. It matches my 1794 interior really well with the brown color selected.

Damn, I like that. Are you running everything directly through the tablet on WiFi, or are you bluetoothing in for your music?

I run pandora natively on the tablet. I have pandora premium so I download my play lists and they pretty much start instantly with this unit. Then when .y phone connects through bluetooth it auto runs hotspot and then the dasaita gets wifi through that. The connection part all happens in like 30-45 seconds with this unit. The tesla took forever to connect.

Tip of the day. Go into factory settings and change steering wheel controls from SWC to CAN. Then you can use the steering wheel study app to map the buttons any way you want.

When you map a button it will give you a list of things you can map. The camera looking one will launch the Fcam app. Was the main reason I wanted to map buttons.

You can define long and short presses too.
