Can you only hook up Apple CarPlay to your phone via the USB cord??

So you need a cord to hook your phone to Apple CarPlay?! I mean, how 2005 is that! This is why I have a Samsung and Spotify.

Depends on which radio you have. Most aftermarket radios from Alpine or Kenwood support wireless Car Play. Looks like Toyota did not include wireless Car Play in the new 2020 radio.
Or maybe you only need the USB connection for the first setup and then after that wireless car play works? Maybe @joonbug can confirm if it’s needed all the time or just the first setup.

It’s not a big deal @joonbug. I have the option to use wired or wireless CarPlay on my head unit and choose wired. It charges my phone and the sound quality is better. I have a ProClip cradle for my phone.

Wired connection isn’t a big deal. Been using it for years. Like the charge too.

There it is! That’s exactly what I was thinking I need. Searching ProClip now. How is yours mounted? Does it withstand our kind of wheeling?

Yeah, I have a Kenwood head unit so everything is wireless from my phone. If you still need a cord in 2020 to use CarPlay in the newest Tundra headunit, well that's astounding to me. It even says that wireless CarPlay is not supported and that bluetooth is inoperable while using CarPlay in the manual. It's like an audio step backwards.

Yet sound quality is light years better through a usb cord. I’ve never used Bluetooth anyway for that reason.

Interesting. I get great quality through my bluetooth. However, I still listen to alot of CDs as well. Have over 600 albums. Maybe I'm a bit of a dinosaur in that respect. I just had no idea that people were still plugging in their phones!

Wireless Car Play doesn’t use Bluetooth for audio. That’s how it gets around the bitrate problems of Bluetooth audio.

You get great quality with Bluetooth. With usb you’d literally have Steely Dan sitting in your truck playing live.*

:rofl:One of my all time favorite bands. I have all of their albums, and I NEVER get tired of their songs. Unparalleled musicianship. Shame about Walter Becker.

Yeah man it holds up great. I’ve never had any problems with it. I also have the ProClip mount for my iPad with no issues.
