Plasti Dip VS Vinyl Wrap VS paint protection sheets

Hey y'all! I'm looking to get some sort of paint coating over the paint to protect against off-roading and general thrashing of my paint.

Any tips on what would be best? Easiest? Cheapest?

No one single product will be all 3 of these.
Best would be doing lineX on the whole truck but that is permanent, 2nd best option is wrapping the whole truck with vinyl or clear PPF. Those are very expensive options and generally not a DIY job. Easiest and cheapest would be doing nothing or plasti dip, but it won't work very well and will look crappy.

 

What is PPF? I had a paint guy tell me vinyl only lasts 5 years. I could get my truck plasti dipped clear for around a thousand. As long as it looks better then pin stripes along the sides of the truck I’m ok with that.

The lines is a no go because I’d like something less intensive.

Your best bet is vinyl wrap.

 

I saw a truck that was plastidipped clear and it had a rubbery feel and just looked hazy, but it was indestructible. What reasons do you think plasti dip is bad? You think vinyl will last a while?

 

Vinyl will last and hold up to pinstripes. Vinyl is warrantied for 3-5 years but I have seen it last longer than that. Vinyl will be cheaper than PPF and look 100000x better than plasti dip.

 

Just spoke with a professional. He seems to think the same thing. He said they can ceramic over it and it will last longer. Looking into this now. Only thing is it’s so expensive. I’ve done all the mods to my truck. Every last one except for window tint. I think I can handle the install, although there will be a learning curve.

 

You can ceramic over it. And if you are semi patient you can do it yourself you just need time and some YouTube certification. If you want a pro to do it the going rate for a full size truck is about $3,000-$3,500 in NM. I’ve had a few of my wraps go through some tough wheeling and they help up. Only failure I have seen due to wheeling was rubbing the whole bedside on a tree that also cause the fiberglass bedsides to fail.

Ceramic wont protect from scratches. It can help. But if seriously off roading, it will still scratch. I love ceramic coats on my trucks...but it doesnt cover scratches.

 

Yeah that’s what he said. Ceramic is like just more clear coat. He said if you ceramic over the vinyl it will last longer. I’m not moshing through trees and stuff only worried about desert pin stripes. Like rigid bushes.

 

Ceramic coating can help the longevity of the vinyl. Vinyl is taking the scratch. If it doesn’t go through the vinyl material fully most wraps have “memory” meaning you can heat it and most scratches heal themselves if it’s not crazy.

 

You won’t regret it.

 

Thats cool. Good to know. The MGM i had scratched too easily. Ceramic helped but not very well. But i love it for its other properties of being hydrophobic and cleans easily. Also helps uv protection as its outside 24/7

This shows how to repair some minor scratches in wrap. The ones shown in this video would be somewhat consistent with a small shrub/branch rubbing your truck.

 

Thats pretty cool. Something else for me to look intobut having peace of mind off road would be nicer.

 

I like that it’s UV resistant. Out here in NM clear coats get eaten alive and flake like the truck has dandruff. I like that it’s sealed. And the matte colors look killer.

 

The Toyota paint is so soft. Everything scratches it. Hydrophobic is a great quality due to our color and water spots.

I’m going to love having the protection off road. That’s my number one motive here along with protecting the truck against heavier damage from parking lots, kids, dogs, and generally everything That comes with having and using a truck like a truck.

They quoted me 2500 for 4 stage paint correction w ceramic over it. I’d then wrap the truck and ceramic it myself.

 

I hang rubber stall mats alongside my truck when I go off the pavement. 45 buck a pop from tractor supply and I can take them off when I get home. Only need 6 of them plus 1 for the front.

As far as I know, you cannot wrap anything over a ceramic coated surface.

 

I would suggest paint protection film over vinyl. We have our commercial vans and trucks wrapped with vinyl. I can tell you that they do not certainly hold up that well. My fleet sees construction sites, my trucks with the PPF has held up much better.

When it came time to decide on my sports car. I use my car at the track a lot, so wanted the best protection possible. I ended up using PPF, and have been very happy with it. Some of the guys I track with that used vinyl are not particularly happy. One thing about PPF is finding someone that does it really well.
