What the heck is this noise?

This is driving me crazy. I can't seem to pin point this noise for the life of me. Sometimes it will happen a few times over the course of a minute, and other times it wont happen for several minutes. When it does happen, it only lasts about a second, and I can't seem to determine the location/source.

Has anyone ever experienced this noise before?

 

yep def a pulley bearing. had one on my lightning do the same thing. now figuring out which one...

So, I guess just pull off the belt and check each pulley?

 

Sometimes you won’t be able to feel it without the tension. Sometimes you can feel the grind. If you can’t feel it try this isolator.

Start with the "water test". Use a spray bottle to spray water on the business side of the belt while the noise is present. If the sound goes away for a time, your problem is likely a pulley. If the water has no effect, its likely the belt. I kid you not; this works.

 

yea if its just doing it here and there, most likely wont be able to feel it. youd be surprised at what a little amount of vibration can sound like lol. I just hung my head over the motor until I figured it out..i will say this.. seeing you have a blower, its not unheard of for them to seize up and cause the belt to slip on them..its not likely but still an option nonetheless. id start with the idler pulley.. they seem to be the first to go usually..

 

That makes me nervous. The supercharger was just replaced under warranty for that same issue just a few months before I purchased it. From the service records from the Toyota dealer who did it:

damn man... that's kind of one of those..if it quacks like a duck type situations... is it still under warranty? that's where I would start 100% I wonder why they would replace the entire supercharger, and not just the pulley?

 

I did end up replacing the belt tensioner and belt (genuine toyota parts) last April. The noise either did go away, or I got used to it. However, just in the last two days it has started making this sound:



I guess its off to the dealer. Anyone know how to see exactly when the 5yr/60K warranty expires?

 

Take a long screw diver, metal pole, or similar and place one end at a safe area near the pulley. Put the other end to your ear.

You should be able to narrow it down.

 

Still sounds like the belt tensioner pulley to me..
Sounds exactly like mine did.

 

I tried that. I could really only get to the supercharger pulley, and the idler below the supercharger. The noise was more pronounced on the supercharger.

I just replaced that, along with a new belt about 6 months ago. Truck currently only has ~40K on it.



Either way, I parked the truck and have been driving my old truck which I was going to put up for sale. I have an appointment at the dealer Tuesday morning, and they are bringing in a "Field Specialist" to take a look at it. I am still hoping its an idler or pulley, anything but the SC. They are discontinued but I guess they can still get them.

 

You don't happen to have one of those laser temperature guns, do you?
If you do, before the engine is warmed up you might be able to find a hot bearing/pulley, ect..

I wouldn't necessarily go buy one, but if you already have one, you never know.

 

I do, but I cant find it for the life of me. I guess I will find out Tuesday morning what the issue is. Still hoping its just a bad idler or other pulley. Its about a 40 minute drive to the dealer, and it will start making that noise after about 10-15 mins, so I am also hoping that I do not do more damage driving it down there.

 

welp... I just got back from the dealer. They are putting in the request to replace the SC under warranty. They said it will take about a week for the request and then another week for parts. Meanwhile I can't sell my old truck because I would have nothing to drive.

Seriously, what are the odds of the supercharger going bad after the first 36K miles, getting replaced, and then the replacement goes bad after just 8K miles?

 

Sounded to me like one of the bearings in the supercharger going out, good thing it’s still under warranty. When that’s up, our superchargers can be rebuilt for slightly over a grand.

 

Before I bought this truck I did a bunch of research on longevity of these things. All I found were how long they lasted, with a few mentioning rebuilding them after 100-150K. Now, my first one 36K, the second 8K, and yours at 10K has left me with a really bad taste in my mouth.

Sure, I just dont understand how it only lasted 8K, and its killing my confidence in the reliability, which is the whole reason I came back to Toyota

 

To be fair, the supercharger was never made by Toyota, they just offered it, imagine if it was, it would be good for 300k lol

sucks that you’re going thru this, but since they are replacing it I would ask if it was a new unit or refurbished and from where.

 

Thats fair, I get this is really on Magnuson. I guess I was naive to think that since it had the TRD name on it, it would have 'yota quality to go along with it.

On a positive note, the dealership called earlier today and said Toyota approved the warranty request. Shooting for late next week for install

The dealership said it was Toyota's policy to replace instead of repair, and it was a 14K warranty claim, plus labor, so I assume its brand new. Good point tho, I should confirm that is a brand new unit.

 

I am going to try and update this thread periodically. Its now been 2.5 years and 10K trouble free miles with no supercharger issues.
