I've been looking to get a 2020 Platinum, but came across a 2019 TRD Pro for $5,800 off MSRP.

    • MSRP: $53,800
    • Dealer Offer: $48,000
    • No other dealer fees
    • That's 11% off MSRP
That ends up being about $2-3K less than what I can get a 2020 Platinum for, but I'd be missing out on:

    • Better leather
    • Heated seats
    • Power passenger seat
    • 8" Screen with Carplay
    • Push button
    • JBL Sound
    Thoughts from the group?

go with what makes you happy. For 2-3k if your financing won’t really change much

the JBL system is garbage BTW

You'd be missing out on those things but would also be missing out on the fox suspension if you got the platinum...

I purchased a 2020 Platinum for $48,077 + taxes & fees. I agree with the above comment that the JBL system isn't that great. The sub is garbage (I'm already planning on replacing it) but the speakers are good enough for my needs.
I was under the impression that the Pro has the push button start but I could be wrong. The headunit is easily replaceable if you don't mind non-stock parts; the tesla style HU is pretty nice.
"Better leather", even than the Platinum, can be found with Katzkin.
Although there are some other benefits to the PRO, if you plan on upgrading/lifting the truck at all, you'd be wasting the money going with the PRO; my opinion.

You'd also be missing auto-climate, remote start, cooled seats, park assist, blind spot monitor.
I wish they may a platinum Pro.

Those little comfort things are nice; I was struggling with this when trying to decide between a 2020 Platinum, and a 2020 Pro - and those are even closer in comparison. If you were comparing between the 2020's - I'd say go with the Pro, the only thing you really give up there is Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Parking Sonar, but in your situation, it really just comes down to if you want better suspension and styling - or the comfortable things. Just remember, it'll be cheaper, and easier to put better suspension, and replace the grille and badging on the Platinum, than it would be to add all of the comfort things to the Pro - except for the bed stamp.

I agree. Before I bought my Platinum, I read that it would be cheaper and less work to turn a Platinum into a PRO than turn a PRO into a Platinum. That is partly - along with some other amenities - is why I bought the Platinum.

Thanks for the feedback all. I think I am still leaning heavily towards the 2020 Platinum and continuing to work dealers down on price. I'm mainly an on-road driver and wouldn't be considering a lift/tires/suspension.

The thing that had me considering the 2019 TRD Pro was the fact it is only 100 miles from me, my preferred color (VooDoo Blue), and it appeared to be a great price on an otherwise hard to discount TRD Pro. I could probably still knock them down a bit more on price, but I'm thinking at a minimum I'd need to upgrade the following on the 2019 Pro:

    • Aftermarket HU w/ Carplay

I think that was definitely true before the 2020 model.
One thing that put me over the edge and had me go for the Pro was my wife, (I'm a lucky man). She told me I'd be happier if I just went with the Pro - and she was right. It was a much harder decision back before the Pro was built on the Limited platform - but once I saw they changed it up for the 2020 it made my decision easier. I do still miss my rear parking sonar though.

The 2019 Pro is VooDoo Blue (my preferred color).

The 2020 Platinum is also VooDoo Blue or a host of other colors.

I bought my 2019 Pro for 48,000 and a few add ons came with it.

    Dealer could go lower.
    I would walk on it

That fucker will sit there due to the 2020s out and everyone in grabbing the push buttons

Yeah...I think I am going to let it sit for awhile and see if they can do anything else. Obvious it hasn't moved much as of now.

While it is a GREAT deal on a 2019 TRD Pro, the delta between the price of it and a 2020 Platinum isn't as compelling to make the move yet.

Out of curiosity, what portion is garbage? Poor sub? Poor highs? Poor mids? Low volume?

It's the low volume; and it may be more things, but it's hard to truly assess those since the volume is so damn low. It really bummed me out when I bought my truck, because I came from an FJ Cruiser that had a premium JBL system that was amazing.

You can't really compare the Platinum and the PRO. The PRO is a bare bones Off Road Beast. It comes with less frills ON PURPOSE. If you want all those bells & whistles, get the Platinum. If you want one badass off road truck that drives like a Cadillac on the road then get the PRO. I don't miss all that other stuff, been there did that. I like my PRO for what it is, Unadulterated Man Truck.

Toyota de-tunes all of their head units so that "Max" audio doesn't blow out the stock speakers. The JBL speakers get loud enough for my needs but I may replace them later down the road but the sub is non-existent.

Do you care about resale? I noticed the Pro had the highest resale on KBB before I bought my '19 Pro. Fake news?

Good deal. I wouldn’t give up my 19 limited (lifted now) for a pro. I really enjoy the adaptive cruise, heated seats and all the other creature comforts. If I was going to use my truck for lots of off roading, hunting anything more then my limited could handle easily, then I’d buy the pro. Love the pro looks though!

Given that the 2019 has been there longer, you might be able to get them to go lower. You could also see if they will bring the price of the 2020 down to match (don't mention you are interested in the older truck, just point out that the Pro is cheaper), and if they won't, you can still opt for the Pro.

Also, are you planning to lift the truck? If you are, then you might as well skip the pro.

Man reading through this thread is making me appreciate my 2020 Pro more. Sounds like pre 2020, the Pro was watered down a lot. Compared to my ‘19 limited, my 2020 Pro is only missing blind spot and back up sensors.

but to chime in on OP’s question- I came from a 19 limited to a 20 Pro. I freakin Love push button/keyless entry and CArPlay. You don’t sound like you need great suspension. Go with the 20 platinum. More features. Don’t let the good price of the Pro sway you from the better match.

Find out the build date of the 19 pro, should be somewhere on the window sticker
It’s likely an 18 month old truck, probably been sitting on their lot since October 2018, IMO that price isn’t juicy enough to justify it.
I had the same decision to make back in 2016, I ended up going platinum and adding the pro suspension along with better wheels and tires. I do 90% street & freeway miles. The creature comforts are used everytime I get in the truck,

The improved head unit, push button start, remote start, proximity entry, parking sensors, BSM, better leather, better seats, etc.... make this an easy decision. Get the Platinum and enjoy the hell out of it.

The better head unit / push button start / proximity entry on the wife’s 4Runner Pro are soooooo nice compared to my 2018 Platinum Tundra. The 2018 interior feels very dated compared to the 2020.

Also not sure if it’s a 4Runner Premium JBL vs Tundra Premium JBL, or if it’s a 2020 vs. 2018 difference. But the 4Runner stereo rocks where as I had to replace the amp / speakers / sub in the tundra.
