What do you all use/prefer?
Hand tools vs. Power tools?

 

I use both

 

Power tools are great for disassembly and quick assembly but I like to turn down the speed because I don’t want to jack the threads up. And I only trust handtools for the final tightening. There’s something about the feel of turning a wrench.

 

Both. Hand tools for finesse and M18 impacts for any bolt or fastener that doesn’t like to be finessed.

He sold his tundra! I think it wasn’t practical for his uses. Miss him around here though. He was good at making DIY videos.

I have standard box end wrenches, and ratchet wrenches. M12, and M18 Milwaukee powertools. I actually got started on milwaukee because my mother has rheumatoid arthritis, and she likes to do yard work. Standard gas powered weedeaters vibrate too much for her. I got her the milwaukee electric weed eater. Perfect for her.
It came with the 9.0 battery and rapid charger. That battery is a beast.

I especially love the M12, 3/8 stubby Impact wrench for disassembly, and quick reassembly like @15whtrd said.
That being said I have several impact sockets standard, and metric. Deep, and shallow or regular as I call them.

I do my best to stay away from adjustable wrenches. I prefer using a 10mm on a 10mm. Some mechanics I have worked with use 8mm on 5/16th. 3/8th on 10mm, etc... That's on them when they strip it out. Lol

I want to build a shop out here on mom and pops place. Someplace pops can work in the relative comfort instead of the elements like he has had to do his whole life, plus I'll pop by once in a while to tinker lol. Once the shops built I'll expand my tool kit

 

There was a video the other day on www.crazyshit.com where a nice ladyfolk had a cordless POWERed drill, with a....uhhhhhh....well.....um.....let's say unique attachment, that she held in her HAND, to perform her "maintenance."

So you can utilize HAND and POWER tools in the same operation. No need to dither over picking between the two.

I have an entire roll away with every and all of the good hand mechanics tools. I also have most of the DeWalt cordless tools. And I'll tell ya, the cordless impact guns are TOTAL GAME CHANGERS.

Here's a Tundra example. When I did the differential fluid change on my 2017 for the first time the fill hole plug on the front differential was/is in a somewhat hard to access location. I'm lying on the ground in tight quarters. The plug needs a couple of extensions and (IIRC) a universal joint. This thing was gonna be a beatch. I got the extensions combo'd to just the right length and stuck my smaller DeWalt impact gun on it. A quick blast on the trigger and the plug was loose. AWESOMENESS. No bloody knuckles.

Make it Christmas in February. And gift yourself a cordless impact gun. Go ahead. Do it. The baby's new shoes can for dang sure wait.

 

At work I have a small tool box. 6 drawer, 4 slim drawers, and 2 thick drawers. Completely chockablock full of tools. I don't have anything close to that at the house. I'll post a picture of it when I go back to work tomorrow. I have been out of work since November for stress fractures in both feet. Double walking boots are no fun.

Yes Sir. Whether you're a Red person or a Yellow person (OK some are gray (Porter Cable)) these things are amazing. Small. Compact. Ergometric. AND oh so powerful. Battery life is plentiful.

 

Couldn't agree more.

 

I like the orange ones with lifetime replacement, the cost of batteries for the yellow ones were driving me crazy.

Very nice. The snap on unit. Lol I have thought about upgrading to a bigger box, but it might be cumbersome getting in and out of tight areas at work.

 

Mine never moves , but yes if I was in a dealership it have to get a good size tool cart

@Tundra2 ,I’m a mechanic for UPS in a small facility and I’m the only mechanic so my tool box has a home in my shop at work ! It would never fit in my garage at home , I can’t even park a car in there .

 

@55kcement I'm a maintenance tech at a small factory. There are 20 of us. My box fits where others do not. Sounds like you have awesome job security. I enjoy tinkering, and fixing so most days I don't even feel like I'm at work.

 

I am considering upgrading to this. Possibly fab-ing up a lifted frame on bottom with rubber wheels. Butcher block top stained either a light, or a dark stain

The tool boxes at harbor freight are actually pretty good my dad has one and it’s surprisingly very sturdy! And the price is great ! My tool box empty was 10k$$

Scored on the neighborhood deal of the century last summer. Got about $2000 worth of tools and two tool boxes to house them for $125. Guy was a part time mechanic retired and his brother a full time mechanic retired. I just wheeled the tool box around the corner and parked it in my garage. Lots of old school hand tool stuff from back when everything was made in USA +50 years ago.

I picked up a heavy banger a few months back. Its a bit heavy and bulky for under the truck stuff but gets things done with ease. I’d like to try a smaller mid-torque model, but wasn’t sure of the nut breaking power so I went all in on the big boy! $199 tool only on Black Friday.
