Need local transmission 01’ TRD

I just took my 01’ TRD 230,00 miles to Eagle transmission. They want $3500 to rebuild it! Can’t do that. Just spent $4000 on front end rebuild. Word on the street, is replace it with either 02-03’. Supposedly they’re better built and will bolt right up on an 01’. Does that sound right to any u knowledgeable transmission dude mons?
Trying to deal local seems better that ordering one from eBay.

$3500 is the rebuild cost in my area, as well. They can rebuild it better than before with newer parts, but I understand you just went through spending money on the front end.

From readings, 04 AC transmissions are best and are plug and play. You’ll be spending $1500-2k anyways?

 

Man everything has always been fine. Truth be toLed like a dumb ass I accidentally removed my trans plug instead of oil plug. Caught fluid in 5 gallon bucket prob a quarts or more. And tried to pour it back in trans fill. But missed the hole somewhat took it to toyo to check. They said it fine. Not low on fluid. But I know I spilled at least 1/2 qt. That was about 6 months ago

 

What is your transmission doing/not doing and is it throwing any codes? Many times it can be as simple as a bad solenoid and an unscrupulous shop could try to get a rebuild job out of it...just sayin....

 

No codes thrown. It slips / hesitates from stop to first. I’m not shelling out to rebuild. If anything i think I’ll get a salvage one. I can find a 03-04 ( which they say is a better trans and it fits my 01’) for around $1000 low mileage. I think it’s the way to go. Any thoughts.

 

Could be low on fluid. A 01' has a dip stick why don't you check it yourself and verify the fluid is at the correct level? Also, since you said you drained some out accidentally I would just do a pan drain and fill with some fresh fluid. Just get a proper funnel so you don't spill trying to pour fluid down the dipstick tube.

 

PCJ has good advice. Knowing your situation better probably leads us to believe your fluid is low. Just a little low on fluid and the shifts can become rough.

Based on my truck which is 4x4 with the A340F transmission (2 wheel drive has the A340E) I would do the following:

1) Buy 3 gallons of Valvoline Dex/Merc. Wallywurrld sells it for $14 a gallon.

2) Drain and fill (usually 4-5 quarts).

3) Drive truck and check dip stick with engine running at normal temp.

4) Fluid should be between the hot hash marks with engine running. Check it a few times after driving with engine running as it may change a little. Add as necessary.

5) Do another drain/fill on the transmission again to refresh it all a few days later. Suck and fill your Power Steering rez with the leftover fresh fluid you may have, as it takes the same fluid spec.

Had a transmission flush at toyo. Still slipping from stop to first. At transmission shop now. Doesn’t look good. Need a new one

 

Ok. I see I missed the Toy checking the fluid level but didn’t see they ‘flushed’ it.

I wonder if you had engine oil/dirt in your catch pan and it mixed with the transmission catchings and you poured that back in. This may have been the culprit and the oil messed the transmission up with 6 months driving.

I am assuming you’re truck was fine prior to your FUBAR?

I’ve been riding this bitch hard from time to time for nearly 20 yers. I wanna put an 03-04 in it. They’re cheaper than what I got and they say better. Something about the planetary gear

I have a 2002 Limited and the 2004 transmission was recommended by a Toyota dealership mechanic to be put in my trk as an upgrade. Something about what you stated and additionally it having an added gear, I think? So, that's what will be done when this one quits on me. The 2004 trans is a plug and play part that fits all 1st gen trks. So I heard, so why not yours also because it's a 1st gen trk, right.

There is a Toyota dealership mechanic on this site that enjoys helping forum members here with hard to answer questions, and a Toyota dealership parts person who can also verify if a part will fit you trk. I don't recall their names here, but other members know who they are and will help you get in touch with them.

Sometimes it's best to look at what a dealership's price is for parts. Rolling the dice with a trans from the junk yard can become a big kick in the rear vs the I should have spent an extra grand for a new one from a Toyota dealer.

These 2 links are a online Toyota parts company. They are owned by Toyota of Hollywood dealership and are physically located on their dealerships new vehicle sales premise, and their area is huge. Ck out their prices below. Toyota in this case is the way to go.

I imagine transmissions ordered from a Toyota dealership are definitely not rebuilds, but are remanufactured if not new.

Rebuilt trans in SE FL = $1,800 and up. That includes everything (remove, parts and labor, reinstall) with 1 to 3 yrs warranty. Good rebuild trans shops are hard to find. Another roll of the dice if not highly recommended by locals.

Sure sounds that way! 3500 local rebuild 2200 remanufactured( but I have to buy online but good as new with toyo part andwarantyOR I found an 01’ salvage with 108kmiles for $1130. I’m leaning toward the salvage. Anyone who has any experience have any thots. Hand models need not comment

 

I think you could find an 03 or 04 salvage for same price (supposed to be better built)

 

So I’ve heard. I’ve thought it over tho and I don’t want to go Frankenstein. My trk is all oem toyo parts except coilovers. I just want to bolt and go. Called toyo, they do not recommend here. But seems to be the word here to go with 03-04s

Someone help me out here. When you buy a new or used transmission, how much does it cost for shop to do the swap? I’m assuming labor cost is the same whether its new or used.

 

New member here. I have driven a new purchase 2001 Limited Access Cab a total of 247 miles when the transmission decided it would rather be more moving pieces sealed in the housing. While multiplication is usually a great thing, not so in my case. Transmission replaced with a remanufactured unit was $3000 for the unit and $1200 for labor (including putting in a radiator with Toyota red). 100K mileage warranty for the next three years.

$4200 out the door. Oh and they stripped the bolt holding the skid plate and the plastic shield.

Looks like the Labor is $1200 in your case for a new reman’d unit. I’ll assume this would be the same price for a used junkyard unit, as well.

Looking like a custom reman’d transmission using the existing housing in the $3500 range is the way to go unless one can DIY a drop a swap (risky at this age).

No dealership work at this point. Local Dealership priced the remanufactured unit near $5600 with a $1200 refundable core. 12 month 12K miles. Plus another $1700 to install. No labor covered if it fails.

I have had the opportunity to work on a few Land Cruisers (60, 80, 100 series) to bring them back to health and this opportunity really shook my financial resources down to the bedrock. My wiser half looked at the numbers and we agreed on the reman with a warranty. A junk yard pull was $950 shipped to a business address. An online retailer in Delaware was $2200 with a three year unlimited mileage warranty. The guy I get to work on stuff I don’t want to recommended an independent shop so I went with his wisdom.

Junk yard got there for a reason. Delaware favors business over consumer. Local guy I can sit in his shop and eat up valuable time. It was the most expensive short term and the least expensive long term if I have any issues. Oh, and the warranty is transferrable.

 

What is your version of a "custom reman’d transmission"?
What type of modification to the transmission is done to make it more durable, and to improve it's function and feel? Maybe a shift kit? Torque converter?

Also, yes, a shops labor is typically comparable to other shops for transmission replacement only. You bring them a new, remanufactured, rebuilt or junk yard trans to be installed and they will charge you max hrs labor fee, not the real time spent on it if lessor. However, if a shop rebuilds the trans themselves, their price includes the removal and reinstall labor cost. The total depends on local trans shops avg charge and competitiveness to get work in the shop.

Good example is this guy. He's an old fellow from another country down here who stays in business due to good word of the mouth and online review reputation. He tells you he's here for the long term and doesn't rip people off, and reason why he's been here for the past 40 yrs.
For a 1st gen auto trans he'll rebuild it for $1800. That includes removal/installation, all solenoids (good or not) are replaced with new, broken parts and what ever they do that's normally required for a trans rebuild is of course new also. I think he also tows your vehicle to his shop for free if within some radius that's reasonable.

With the right tools (transmission jack) DIY is easier than ripping the front engine apart to replace the timing belt. But, roughly $1200 is worth charging some one to do the job. That's what I would charge for a transmission replacement job on these trks. Nice quick side cash for ocean fishing during this retirement gig. And I would refuse to replace it with a junk yard trans because if it doesn't work, I get the blame and aggravation of possibly having to go to court over it.

To me a trans from Toyota beats any companies reman. I've not heard good reviews of those out there doing only that. When the time comes I might choose a trans ordered from Toyota & DIY, or for a couple hundred cheaper I'll pay the Old man and not break a sweat.

 

I don't have a clue if this is the book used, but hopefully it's something that should give an idea of what to expect. Yet it's probably wrong as it's not even in the ball park after reading what members here are stating labor cost to being. I'd say add between 25 to 50% and it will match their will rip ya off labor charge.

@Professional Hand Model alldata time shows 8 hrs with transfer of parts (aka the transfercase and some sensors if need be)
so at my dealers rate of 130 a hour your looking at a bit over $1000 before tax just in labor

labor time to pull and rebuild the transmission then reinstall is just under 24 hrs. thats 3120 in labor alone at a dealer (we wont rebuild. OEM reman or OEM used.) that 3120 doesnt include parts.

 

Custom reman’d transmission is one where your assy housing is removed, reused and all new parts are installed with shift kits designed for how you use it and then reinstalled. Parts installed are superior products and backed by warranty.

 

"All new parts are installed" is a reman. Shift kits, J mod, etc = customizing. "Parts installed are superior products" can be said is Bulletproofing. Bulletproof is all weaknesses of the motor have been corrected with superior aftermarket product, and you can beat on it w/o hurting anything.

 

1000 miles into the transmission and all is well. YMMV.
