Can I Disable 4wd

    Ok ok before you guys tear a strip off me, hear me out.

    I bought a complete rear 10.5 third member with 4.88’s, auburn lsd, and a brand new master install kit. Bought the whole 3rd for cheap and am putting it in my truck tomorrow.

    my plan is to take the front drive shaft off (just to be safe) until I can afford and have all the parts needed to do the front.

    my question is; is there a relay or a switch or something easy I can pull instead?

    Probably a fuse, possibly for the actuator. I wonder if that would set any codes though. I'd say look for a fuse, if that sets a code or is common to additional electrical items, pulling the drive shaft would be your next best bet.

    I would suppose that he's just trying to prevent an accidental unintended shift into 4WD.

    Depending on how long it’s going to be before you get around to putting the system back together, I’d just pull the front shaft. If someone else ends up driving your truck or something... you never know.

    The different final drive I’m putting in the back (4.88) is different than the front (4.30).

    accidentally shifting it to 4wd would cause damage to either the t-case, axles, etc.

    The smartest and safest ultimate route is to wait until you have all of the parts.
    If i'm putting on some different tires but only have the rears, i'm not going to put them on and avoid 4wd until i get the fronts. I'm going to have all 4 then install on the rims. Why the rush?

    I recently installed 33‘s up from the stock 32s. Along with the slightly larger size, the tires are much heavier. I can definitely feel how much more sluggish the truck is. Still feels OK but definitely lost some of the pep in its step. 4.88’s would really wake it back up. I actually wouldn’t have minded the 4.88’s on stock tires. Probably would help some of the gear hunting out on the highway through the hills. On a dodge I had, I changed my gears from 3.55s to 4.10s. A lot has to do with your transmission ratios as well, but that set up felt so much better. And after it was accomplished I almost wish they were a little steeper.

    For tundras and their trans ratios and from what I’ve read @dirtydeeds say, anything over 33” should be re-geared. I’m frequently carrying weight with the truck so it’s a no brainer for me.
    Just gotta muster up the cheddar cause it’s not a cheap mod.
    I’ll check back in after I finish installing tonight and have gone for a test drive.

    33s I wouldn't worry about transmission problems, but living further north than me I would eather disable it with a fuse or tape (if you must install it) just in case you need it. It could be used (temporarily) as long as the road is gravel or ice but definitely a no no on tar. If you can do all the work for the front yourself it could be done for around $500 for parts.
    I would save up 500 bones and do them together on a weekend. My .02 cent's.

    500US is ~700 CAD but still parts alone up here would be about 1000CAD

    Kind of wish I went 5.29 but for the sake of my fuel economy, I can live with this set up.
