How did you connect your corner dash speakers?

I'm curious. I installed 3.5" speakers in the corner dash location (they sound a little harsh at high volume). I wired them directly using the existing wiring. The new radio has 22w per channel out, and I am wondering if that is enough power. I also have an amp running the rest of the speakers.

How did you connect your speakers? Like me, or did you run a new line from the amp? Or did you install tweeters instead of something like a 3.5" kicker?

 

This is still something being debated. I have the JBL system and installed a 5-channel amp. I piggybacked the factory wires via a harness for the front doors and front door tweeters and the result is the Lt/Rt dash speakers are also powered. I do not know if this is coming from the factory wires that went to the door tweeters or if it's from the stock HU. I do not know if there's a difference between how JBL and non-JBL systems power the dash speakers.

 

I forgot to mention that I started with non-JBL. I also added a 5 channel amp and piggybacked the factory wires with a harness under the front seat, but I think the corner dash speakers are powered directly from the radio. I could be wrong.

 

How did you install 3.5” in the corner? What speaker did you use and how much trimming? I am trying to do it as I type this and there is no way these suckers are fitting - speakers are too deep

 

Mine are not actually 3.5's - I installed Kenwood excelon KCF-X2C which have a diameter of 2-7/16" and depth of 1-5/16". They drop right in...

I installed new door speakers/tweeters, a sub and an amp before I installed the dash speakers. The stock dash speakers were really very loud compared to the rest of the system. When I added the Kenwood dash speakers they did a better job of blending in. The final touch was I had gains for the door speakers all the way down on the amp - when I increased those a little (because the dash speakers are powered by HU and the door speakers by the amp) the door speakers got louder compared to the dash speakers and now the system sounds very balanced.

 

I'm running 3.5" Kenwoods in the corners and used Toyota wiring adapters that plug into the stock speaker wire plug. They are being powered by a Kenwood DMX906s HU that feeds 22w RMS. All speakers except the dash (components front and rear plus subs) are powered by a 5 channel JL amp. Sound staging is good - no issues.

 

Did you have a depth issue with your dash speakers? Mine are bottoming out and hitting the hvac venting

 

I lucked out and had no fitment issues. Its tight, but they cones are not in contact with anything and the mounting bolts both go down.

 

I did have to do some cutting, but they fit fine. I don't remember what model Kickers I purchased from C-field. I logged in to my account and there isn't a way to see previous items ordered. I know that the speakers didn't touch the vents, and with some cutting away of some plastic they fit fine.

I have my gain turned up, but I think I can go higher. I don't notice anything until I crank up the sound. Then the dash speakers are ear piercing. Maybe I just need a better speaker.

 

At least with the JBL HU the volume level is not linear - it weirdly seems exponential. I know these numbers are arbitrary based on equipment and especially gain settings but it seems like 1-35 has little effect on volume, 36-45 is linear and from 46-50 volume almost doubles. Between 46-50 my dash speakers still get annoyingly loud. My sweet spot is 45 just before hitting the large increase in volume for every tick of the dial.

 

@AZBoatHauler Where did you get a harness adapter for the tweeters?

I'm very reluctant to slice the OEM connections up. I found adapters for the door speakers, but nothing for the tweeters. To be honest, I wouldn't know where to begin connecting the new tweeters if I were to cut the harness. I'd be afraid of crossing wires incorrectly and doing some damage.

For reference, I'm installing Kenwood XP6902c components up front.

I connected my dash corner speakers to my head units rear speaker out, and my center channel tweeters to the head units front speaker outs(did it that way for blue tooth phone calls). Plenty of power and it sounds good. I used an amp for everything else. I have an older kenwood with about 20w per channel. I adjusted the gain on the amp so the dash and door speakers sounded about even at whatever volume.

I left mine as is after installing 5 channel amp and x overs with tweeters in sail panels. I don't hear the dash speakers and that is fine by me

 

I have focal components with tweeters in the dash and they came with adapters for the factory dash plugs that required a little modification to work but they run off the head unit (kenwood DMX905s) with the rest of the door speakers running of an amp.

Although I did have James install these on the Kenwood side and JL Audio twin center tweeters I bought from him I've yet to install.

 

I've got the Metra harness for the door speakers. I couldn't find one for the dash. Turns out I don't need one. I forgot that I had to run the tweeters from the door speaker since I've installed some amplifiers. Kenwood included what I need to make this happen. Thanks for the help anyway. As usual, it was a user error.

 

I'll try adjusting the gain and see how that works. I didn't replace the dash center speaker, but I have been thinking about it.

 

Can I connect a 4ohms tweeter on the corners of the dash and still using the DVC center speaker without splicing any wire

 

Yes I have Kenwood KFCXC3 in the corners and they are 4 ohm. They make adapters for those factory plugs but if you are doing a tweeter you’ll need to make sure you have a crossover filter installed as well.
