I finally got myself a TUNDRA. I have plans to make some improvements in order to make this more of a rock crawler. Here in HI there's some spots with gnarly rocky and gravely trails that help you get to camping spots right on the ocean. I just sold my '05 Ram 1500 w/ 6" Fabtech Lift and 35s. That was great for getting down the trails but wasn't large enough to avoid a few rubs on the skid plates. I expect the Tundra to be very similar. Here's the specs about my truck as I started the build:

    2016 SR5 TRD Off Road

    The Good:
    • 6" ProComp Lift
    • Icon Suspension (Lev 1?)
    • Camburg control arms
    • Moto Metal MO962 20x12 -44
    • Nitto Trail Grappler M/T 35"x12.5"
    The Bad:
    • Wheels were too bald to even drive off the lot.
    • Broken Passenger Tie Rod
    • Too Much Chrome
    • Damaged front passenger quarter panel
    • Minor dents in Driver door

First task is to replace the tie rod, quarter panel, and get new wheels... Photos to come.

I spent the first few weeks getting the repairs, since this was bought from a dealership, this was negotiated into the price. Kihei Auto Sales in Maui were awesome to deal with. They were kind enough to let me purchase the truck at the price it was listed, and I did.:facepalm: Ha! But seriously, they were open to negotiation and I walked away feeling like I got a deal. At the same sticker price it was listed, they included new wheels of my choice w/ alignment ($1626), new quarter panel ($515), new passenger tie rod ($50), dent removal from driver side door ($~150), plus all taxes and fees (~$2000 in HI). Over $4,300 of stuff and that doesn't include the labor involved in the installation of things and alignment. As these upgrades were occurring, I asked them to do one more thing, just for looks... Sand, prime and colormatch the grill and surround! The chrome is going away... Came out looking MUCH better.

If you want to give your 2 cents about the tires, I went with the BFG Mud Terrain KM3s 35x12.5x20. On my Ram, I went through 2 sets of these and love them b/c they look great, have low road noise, and man can they handle rough terrain. I love them, I just don't see as many people running these as I think there should be. Are there any other KM3 people out there?

Next, I'm gonna be adding some more durable hardware and getting rid of the remaining chrome. I've ordered SDHQ sliders, Rough Country Heavy Duty Front and Rear LED Bumpers. Finally, I will throw down the Husky Floor Mats

    Mahalo Mambo143.

Right now truck is being shipped from a different island. Have to wait a week. Ugh. First thing is to drop in these bumpers. Not sure how I feel about that grill in the photo. It’s more aggressive looking, but after color matching my grill I like the looks nice, just doesn’t stand out as much as I’d like to see. Thoughts?

Rough Country all the way around. In the process of wrapping the chrome bulge and surround. FYI...INSPECT BEFORE SHIPPER LEAVES IF YOU CAN. My front bumper came with a damaged corner and the rear had a dent. They replaced it super fast and actually gave me some $$$ back.

:thumbsup:Appreciate the advice. That’s always a good idea. For the most part, it seems like the companies that help customize trucks are good for their word, so it’s always good to pick up the phone if you have an issue.

Also, let me say it’s great to see these bumpers on a real truck. Yours is sick! I found it hard to find many photos outside of the stock ones from RC, so I appreciate the upload.

The stance on both those trucks is perfect and what is most impressive to me. I would wait on the grill decision until after you install the bumpers. I think it will make a big difference in the overall appearance. Right now it’s downright bad with very clean and classy lines. I love the look of those bumpers front and back and it will add to the look in the direction you started with IMO. Post pics when you move along with the installation!!

The truck is sailing over from Maui to the Big Island... will get to see the beauty either Friday or Monday and I am on pins and needles with excitement.

State law says I need fender flares to cover the wheels. Any cool ideas? I think the bushwackers are cool but I don’t want all of the fake bolts to be silver. Can you get them color matched too or would I need to paint them myself? I’m going for a look like
    Army_of_One has. See pic:

That's a hot truck, but not mine. The ones I got were from South East Toyota. They are just like the Bushwackers, but retain the factory mudflaps. The fake bolts come black, as do the flares. I didn't paint mine, and they look fine. The Flares are pretty easy to install yourself. It's a few bolts in the wheel well. The hardest part was applying the weather stripping. I couldn't find any instructions so I winged it. If you go that route and have any questions, I'm here.

    Cheeeehoo!!!!!!!!!!

I finally got my truck! It arrived last week and went straight to the shop. Just so everyone knows, I’m going in the direction of a daily driver that can do some rock crawling too. I’m practical, looking for function mainly, but keeping the look very clean. Probably the only “looks only” things I did was the very first step... Chrome removal therapy. This week I did two of the three necessary procedures.

First, I covered the badges with the Black out overlay kit. This is purely esthetic but didn't break the bank. I didn’t put the bump out stickers on the tailgate yet. The pressed in TUNDRA is pretty cool, I appreciate how they did that, but I spent a lot of coin on this kit and it may be nice to have something that’s different than the next guy. It probably took me longer to write this paragraph than it did to install those but I love the look. Also, these are full coverage, even if you look from up close you cannot see any chrome anywhere, which is what I’ve heard is the problem with other aftermarket versions. Anyhow that made me smile more than I expected it would.

The next mod, which really changes the appearance and attitude of the truck was the bumper replacement. These are the Heavy Duty LED bumpers from Rough Country and all MGM owners should note that they match great right out of the box, no color match necessary! My shop said Rough Country made it pretty easy, but I do need a better switch system inside for the lights. I currently have 3 little buttons dangling under the steering wheel since there’s too much armor-all on the dash for them to stick! The LEDs in the bumpers are BRIGHT at night. I turned them on for the photos but that’s all they’ve been used for this far (isn’t that the case for most LEDs?!). They’ll be awesome for camping and will light up the beach. I’m not a huge light bar guy, I think these are 20” but they really do the trick. I couldn’t imagine the output from some of the 50” bars - those must be nuts at night but not my style esthetically.

More mods coming in the next few weeks and yes, I’ll get to those chrome side steps soon!

@FUNDR. HEY! Brand new here and saw that you ordered the overlay package for you Tundra! I want to do exactly that however my local Toyota said they only made the overlay package for Tundras 2018+ I am assuming you ordered the package for 2018+? And everything fit fine on your 2016? I have a 2015 SR5 so just want to make sure everything fits fine before I pull the trigger. Your truck looks BA man!

I grabbed it from Amazon, and yes it is 2018+ but fit my 2016. I’ll load the photo of what I purchased. Since it’s made by Toyota it fits perfect and costs a pretty penny, however, I read other ppls posts about aftermarket versions that didn’t fit properly or fully cover the chrome all the way and just decided to bite the bullet.

Finally received my SDHQ Sliders and couldn’t be happier. Mahalo SDHQ, I love your product and paid extra extra to get it here in Hawaii. Since I was already in deep with the cost of the product and shipping I installed myself. Not being a big car guy until now I wasn’t sure if I could handle a job like this but I’m glad I gave it a shot. It took roughly 3 hours with 2 ppl but we got it done. The biggest issue was that I had a full gas tank, it would be much easier if you ran it to empty before trying to move it to get the drivers side sliders on.

    And also... cows.

Loving the truck, no big upgrades that I know of for a while besides my RCI skid plate. Maybe brakes though? The truck feels slow to stop and I’m thinking it’s from the 35” tires. I’ll do some research on rotors and see what’s out there.
