Well, I’ve finished the main structure and weld out. You’ll see here I added a second but to accept the spare tire key. This way, if I want to store something else up top, I can mount the wheel here too :)

This rack is far from finished as I have some more great ideas I will be adding. I want to put the rack into the truck to figure out component placements. First, I need to buff the rust off and prime it.

    Stay tuned y’all :hattip:

How did you run the cables for your antennas? Also, is that path watertight after running? I have a mag mount for a VHF antenna and the connector is soldered on both ends so I can't take it off. Interested in getting it run though. Was considering running the cable in the window molding area, and then under the truck into a floor grommet, but that seems like a lot of effort if the window is easier.

I have zero leaks the way I ran the wires through the slider. There is a path to route the wires in the factory weather stripping.

Thank you! I hardly ever open that window, so that should work perfect!

I'm a little surprised that the upper member of the part that goes over the roof isn't attached to the lower member, the part closest to the roof, other than just being cantilevered in the back.

You obviously have way more skills than I ever will, so maybe you have decided this isn't necessary

    It looks great.

Thanks, I’m glad you asked that question, because I have asked that question as well :)

First off, let me say that with anything I build, I’m basically winging it haha.

Secondly, if something I build fails, oh well, back to the drawing board :)

My favourite thing in life is to learn, I’m kinda always expecting for something to fail so I can learn haha. So far, everything I’ve build has held up. I’m really into the way a floating rack looks (obviously haha). So, figured I’d give it a go.

Also, I had considered welding some gussets into the corners I circled (and drew a pretend white gusset :) ). Then I remembered 1” of mig holds 1000lbs of force and said f^ck it. Maybe I should do it prior to failing..? I should add, with the tire mount point about an inch from the headache rack part, the majority of the wheel weight is transferred down through the headache rack into the box side walls...? Or that was my thought process at least haha.

I assume this would help the issue your pointing out?

Got it in there. Really had to squeeze on the coax to get the window closed but it’s in there

Nice, yeah it’s a tight fit for the first time before the wire sheathing is molded to the window shapes. It gets easier the longer it’s in there.

I would personally add a support here in the center of the rack at the front. While the cantilever should be fine, with the offroading you do and the extra strain that puts on stuff, I'd want that strength.

Damn, even if I do gussets underneath the three rack beams?

The gussets you drew in post 218 will support your main frame. Definitely put them in. The support i mention I will add strength to your upper rail.

I agree. Without the front vertical that @Outbound is suggesting, when you have a load on the rack (red) the force is concentrated at one point (green). When you add the front support (blue line), you are boxing the whole upper structure in and spreading the load to the other points (blue arrows). With it boxed in, I think you could skip the gussets, though they wouldn’t hurt anything if you don’t mind the look of them.
    8D6EEC91-5C00-4829-B24A-143800DB3472.jpg

You could also add supports here or here if you like either better stylistically.

I added a 10” light bar to the rack tonight. I’m stoked on this addition with tinted windows :D

No, I didn’t add another front brace. Fellas, the way this thing feels, I just don’t think they’re needed. All the front most parts are solid as hell. I’m sure I could hang the whole rack off any part and it would be true. I plan to add a bunch of lights to the front of it, so might be able to hide the uprights behind some anyway. I’ll see how it goes here for a bit :p
