    2010 Tundra 2020 Tundra- purchasing
Hi all. Been lurking for a while but this will be my first post. Been with Toyota for almost 30 years. First a 1985 pick up (22R motor), then onto a couple 4runners, and currently on my 2010 Tundra I bought brand new in 2009.

Here is my question. Looking at a new 2020 model. Just curious if there is a true difference in ride between a base SR5 and a TRD or even a limited? I was looking at a crewmax TRD model but there is roughly a $6000 difference between that the double cab SR5 on the lot. Will the ride really be that much different? 4x4 models.

Obviously I lose the back seat room, "off road package", fog lights, and center shift...but not sure I need them anyways.

Thoughts on how the ride would be different?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I had a 2017 SR5 Crewmax and traded it for 2018 Limited. No difference in ride. I loved my SR5 look with black handles and mirrors but I love the leather interior and some of the features of the Limited. I give a slight edge to the Limited but the SR5 Premium was nice too.

Buy the cab configuration you want. I went with double cab for bed length, didn’t really care about trd because I knew I would be changing, wheels & suspension. Most importantly buy the truck you want!

I personally noticed a difference between:

    - double cab and CrewMax
    - SR5 and SR5 w/TRD OffRoad

With that said, I live down a gravel road with some washboards on it, so I'd definitely notice the difference between those two. DC was 'bouncier' across washboards and the like than CM was; and SR5 was a bit less controlled than SR5 w/TRD OffRoad package or something with upgraded shocks. All of them rode about the same on regular roads.

Not sure if it matters to you but the base SR5 does actually come with fog lights (or at least mine did - they may be part of the SR5 Upgrade package, which you want anyway to get the 38 gallon fuel tank). Mine also came with a console shifter. Is the DC you're interested in an SR5 or an SR?

Might be helpful if you specify which TRD package you're interested in - Sport, Off Road, Pro, etc. I believe the Pro is the only one with different suspension so should be the only one that rides differently but others would know better than I do.

One side note. The TRD Off-Road package (not to be confused with the Pro, of course) actually does have a slightly upgraded suspension (Bilstein 'tuned' shocks), as opposed to your standard SR5, which just has regular shocks. I test drove a regular SR5 and then the one I own (with the TRD Off-Road package), and could tell a difference. Decently different on bad gravel roads but not 'terrible' and it rode fine on-road.

I went with the SR5 with upgrade package. I got leather, 38 gallon tank, and a couple other small "features" I'm now waiting on a set of 6112/5100 I got aftermarket.

OK. This helps quite a bit. I need to check on the gas tank as I would want the larger one. I guess my main concern was which comfort driving down the road and wondering I am getting a different suspension on a base vs TRD or Limited which might have a more comfortable ride.

I have driven the Dodge and Chevy and they definitely ride better than my current Tundra but at the end of the day, they just aren't enough "truck" for me. Those plastic pieces on the bottom won't last a cornfield in December nor the plow i put on. Plus I still love the look of my Tundra. Personally and I know I am on an island here, but I am glad they haven't made huge changes to the body/style.

TRD off-road and TRD sport have better suspension than limited. If it’s more of hwy driving comfort try TRD sport

I went with a limited Double Cab TRD ...

You don’t get the gas tank skid plate without the TRD option, I just upgraded the skid plate to the TRD skid plate and I’m good to go.
Typically I don’t screw with the truck a lot until I have a good amount of miles on it and it’s debugged this way I don’t get into the “its your mods” discussion when I take it to the dealer to get checked out.

2020 new wise - they did add auto start to many of the trucks, this wasn’t part of the 2019 offers.

I went limited so I get the back sonar, blind spot monitor, .... with the premium package.. I didn’t want a crew cab otherwise I would have got the premium.

They all have the same suspension (pretty much) - SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794..... When you add the TRD Package, which can be added to most of those, you get different shocks and sway bar in the back, and stiffer sway bar in the front. Then the third option is the TRD Pro that has a better suspension than the 'regular' TRD.

    So, only 3 suspension options.

the other “UNIVERSAL” constant to new Yotas... that stinks !

    TIRES

Why in the name of God Toyota doesn’t put on BF AT KO’s or something like that as an option is grating !!

Otherwise stated - the spring is the major component of any suspension, they all have the same springs - only the shock’s, sway bars, ... change between models. :)

TRD offroad- 18 inch wheels, better shocks, skid plates, etc
TRD Sport- 20 inch wheels, road tuned shocks, rear sway bar
TRD PRO- more off road oriented, 2 inch higher in front

Generally it seems most folks feel Tundras ride better on 18 inch wheels. 20 inch wheels ride firmer but when paired with the Sport package, tighten up handling.

Thank you all for the help. It is looking like I am going to go with a 2020 double cab SR5. I will add the level kit which I believe they quoted me as 1" rear and 2" front. I plan to change the tires out to General Grabber X3 and go with 275/70R18. That tire (according to the forum) will sit about 1" higher than stock tires and should look pretty nice on the truck. I plan to have Toyota add the sway bar in the back.

I have mapped out the accessories which includes an N-Fab pre-runner light bar, topper, bed mat, seat covers, weather tech floor mats, window vents/visors, LED lights for pre-runner, roof mounted LED, and fender flares. Hoping it looks like it does in my head.

I am definitely having a hard time letting go of my 2010 that I have had since its birth.

My opinions probably won't be very popular with some but no matter if you get the crewmax or double cab just get the sr5 with the upgrade package. The fog lights come with this package, an 38 gallon tank as mentioned. As far as Toyota suspension goes....save your money. The trd package in the tundra is a rip-off in my opinion and the suspension will be needing replaced by 40,000 miles just like the normal sr5 suspension. Toyota cuts corners on suspension. Trust me. Save your money for aftermarket suspension. Do not buy into the trd package.. now if the trd package had a locker or something significant, that would be different. But Toyota likes to short sell it's customers and sell you on the reliability, not the features.

You have to get the SR5 upgrade package to get the 38 gallon tank. And I believe you have to get the TRD OR package to get the LED headlights. At that point, might as well get a Limited.

Depends on the deal. I bought exactly that - SR5 CrewMax w/SR5 upgrade package, TRD OR package, spray-in bedliner, and a buncha other stuff, and before taxes ($1800), it was $41700. No way could I have gotten a limited for that price.

Is that suspension lift or spacers? For the $6K difference in price you can upgrade to better suspension than you'll ever need and still be ahead price wise.

I imagine it is spacers given they said it would be about $500 installed.

I believe the TRD pkg does add an LSD, but no locking option. I like the TRD skid plate package, but then I off road quite a bit.

But isn't it a electronic limited slip feature? One that applies the brakes to the side that is slipping? Is it a true limited slip? Pretty sure my sr5 has the same feature
