I can’t seem to get the oil drain plug washer off. I’m reluctant to pry on it too hard until I’m confident that I’m not banging on the pan. It was this way on the first change. I just put another on for the first change but I’d like to peel it off if it isn’t attached. Any tricks?

    Thanks

    Bill

Use a plastic scraper to avoid damage to the pan and tap the scraper with a hammer a couple of times if you need to. I've had this happen on occasion.

I had the same issue. Tap it with a flat head carefully.

Flat head careful tapping. Mine had 1 or 2 small copper washer underneath the blue Toyota gasket that weren’t removed.

If it's sticks so much that it won't come off easily just leave it, it's not going to cause a leak and you're way more likely to damage the pan. The washer is only there to help prevent damage from over tightening. Most mechanics and lube shops do not replace them. Ill replace them if I have them on hand but if not I don't sweat it.

yep. flathead and hammer. I think they glue them sumbitches on.

Also...you don't have to change that every singe oil change. I got about 3-4 then change it.

Buy them from a reputable source. There are reports of counterfeit ones that leak bad.

Keep it on and then keep using the drain bolt method.

Smartest man in the room method --- get the silly thing off there through the appropriate means and then install a Fumoto oil drain valve (it comes with its own gasket). Never have to experience O.D.P.F. ever again (Oil Drain Plug Frustration).

I still have the original one on my corolla after 40+ oil changes.

Same, flathead and the palm of your hand lightly. I typically replace every time as I have a ziploc bag full of them. Cousin works at a toyota dealership as a mechanic/tech and he sent them to me. But I'm going to start doing it every other or ever few oil changes as I have three Toyotas that require them (Tundra, Prius and LS400).

I agree with all previous posters that indicated a flat-bladed screwdriver or mechanics scraper against the gasket edge tapped with the heel of your hand.

There will likely be gasket material remaining on the opening surface as shown in Post #9, or it wouldn't have been stuck. If you like, use a razor blade glass scraper (that flat tool used to peel off your expired registration sticker) to carefully shave off any remaining residue. Perfect OCD cleanliness is not required, because the new gasket is likely to seal even if there is slight residue...witness owners finding stacks of gaskets under their drain plugs.

Just put your drain plug barely in the hole and cock it sideways by hand. The washer will come right off.

We change them every oil change at Lexus. Don't double stack them. I just use a pair of needle nose pliers. Grab it from the inside edge and outside edge and twist. Our washers don't technically "crush" like a standard copper type gasket would. If you are seeing a crush you are definitely over tightening the drain plug. I have had to use a gasket scraper before, but it's so rare I can count the amount of times on one hand. You won't damage the pan if your scraper is wider than the diameter of the drain.
