Thank you for pointing this out!
This is probably one of the single biggest things that people miss when they go to bigger tires. They don't get the speedometer corrected, and don't even bother to factor in that it's off in the first place. I'd almost be willing to bet money that the speed hasn't been corrected, so pulling the trailer at over 80 MPH the 3k RPM isn't exactly shocking.

I brought it up because I heard a guy complaining about his 2nd gen a few years ago. He towed a toy hauler across state and was complaining the truck would get less than 6 mpg going 80 mph with a trailer. He was running 35s.

Few months later he gets a speeding ticket. Turns out the cop was the first person to check his speedometer being off so he was pulling that trailer way too fast. Probably with china bombs on it rated for 65 and not balanced.

Really, it's always faster to arrive at the destination safely than not at all.

Our different backgrounds colour our opinion of 'easy'. OP is used to diesel, as am I for towing or hauling and it's so different compared to gas hauling. My real eye opener for how good the Tundra is was towing a similar load to OP's with an F250 6.2 gasser - that thing revs like there's no tomorrow.
But me still being used to diesel HD's any gas engine will still bug me, the way the Tundra holds gears when using tow/haul does get annoying. It's not struggling, it's just how the computer works. So when going on flat trips when towing I tend not to use tow/haul, the truck has no issue towing and it doesn't hold gears for as long.

Reading this thread really makes me want to spend way less time on the highway and way more on the mountain gravel.

Maybe we need a simple physics refresher sticky. Don't be morons people.

It's exacerbated if a truck has a lift (moment arm is increased). My truck is stock, so it shouldn't be an issue.

It is indeed especially if it's a block lift. Mine is stock height too. It can still wrap a bit and the driveshaft will give some vibes <5mph in some situations with stop signs or lights on a hill. On the flat it's usually fine because it doesn't need nearly as much throttle to get moving.

It's kind of annoying, and sometimes I think about trying a traction bar, but since towing near max gvwr doesn't happen too often I just take it easy and put up with it

Not a RZR, but close enough. This is a CanAm Defender and a 14’ trailer on a 2018 Tundra.

I pulled it Saturday and Sunday at 75-80 on the highway all over the Texas panhandle - maybe 500 miles total - while chasing coyotes with some buddies.

I was in tow/haul and in D. My RPM’s sat between 2300-3100 and transmission in 5th/6th the entire time. There were exceptions - for example, we were bucking a 15 mph headwind for a couple hours and the truck wasn’t able to maintain speed in 5th or 6th at 75.... but it would maintain 75mph in 4th. I paid for it at the pump, but could have slowed down some.

I went from towing this in a 2012 4Runner to a Tundra. The difference is night and day. The 4Runner was capable... but the Tundra just does it so, so much better.

OP, the transition between my 4Runner and the Tundra is exactly what you’re feeling between a diesel and the Tundra. I assure you, the Tundra will tug your rzr around at highway speed all day safely, but you’re going to experience higher RPM’s and more frequent gear shifts than your accustomed to.

    It isn’t a dog.... it’s a half ton pickup.

Last weekend's trip 6 hours each way. 18' tandem dovetail trailer with 2017 Honda Pioneer 1000-5 (1709lb listed wet weight, but many mods added). Speed limit was 75mph, so speed nazis calm down.

Tow haul not used, no struggle...

10-4 guess I read it wrong thought you were saying the 8 was 35Kish

“Whoops fat fingered it. Meant D5...right around 25k lbs. But a D8 is only 32k ish more or less. Could have pulled that to if it wasn't so wide!! Hahaha”

Granted I'm not towing anything super heavy.. the trailer alone is ~1,500 and add another ~1,000 in RTT/gear/liquids for 2,500 total.. but my truck is also on 40" tires, the trailer is on 40" tires, and I'm raised up higher with a 4.5" bracket lift, .75" body lift, and maybe 1" additional lift from the long-travel kit. I barely have to press on the gas (35%-50% tops) going up mountain grades to maintain ~70mph on odometer (~77 actual/corrected)..

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B975JVPnPWL/

But I'm also sporting a supercharger and 4.88 gearing. So in that sense.. it sounds like you need to do at least one of those mods or both. I'll be regearing again to 5.29 so I can turn the eventual ~42" tires just as easily.

If he got the speedometer recalibrated and drove at a normal towing speed there would be way less of an issue.

    For what it’s worth...

few years ago towed the lady’s car from Dallas to LA. 328 bmw on a uhaul trailer. Truck on 35 BFG ATs and Icon 3.0s and their rxt leafs on the standard configuration.

I had absolutely zero issues.... other than some squat from my gear in the back. The add a leaf would’ve made all the difference I didn’t even really need.

Reading through all of this makes me wonder should I invest in upgrading from a Tacoma....

It must pull like a diesel but drink gas like it is bourbon :burp:

They don't look right unless jacked 6-10" into the air :transformer:

The more $$$$ I throw under the hood creates awesome POWA :amen:

Driving a loaded trailer behind a Tundra at 80 mph in Florida and being able to STOP for a Dumba$$ only takes 100'

Now I might be Old School :hattip: BUT the reason for buying a truck; use the thing as a TRUCK... not a dam toy....;)

My career is moving things from 21-50 ton and SPEED does not mean a dam thing if I can not STOP :monocle:

Ok, I am still looking for a Tundra and enjoy reading the Facts & fiction found here....

    Enjoy your weekend :fistbump:

I never thought that a gas burner would pull like a diesel. I've had plenty of lifted gas burners and plenty of diesels, but this is by far the worst gas burner when it comes to pulling I've ever had.

Really? It doesn't seem like you understand the difference. Why do you think that it's unreasonable for a lifted gas-powered truck on 35" tires to run at 3000RPM while towing at 80MPH? What are you expecting?

I respect your opinion OP. I also have towed with HD Diesels and Gas engines and for 1500 series trucks my top 3 in no particular order are The Tundra 5.7L 6 speed, Ram 1500 Hemi 8 Speed with 3.92s and the GM Trucks 6.2L. While I haven't towed with these trucks with a lift and 35s I am going to say a proper regear would probably be a big step in the right direction to match your lift and wheel set up.

I just got back from our first trip with our 25 foot hybrid travel trailer. Weighs about 5k. It did search for gears at times on uphill climbs but otherwise towed well and as expected. We towed our pop up with a 4runner and it did the same so all in all we were very happy with the performance.......but that’s perhaps directly related to our realistic expectations of a gas powered 5.7 v8 vs a diesel.......

    A bunch
I don't know which gassers you've had, or what the tires/gearing were on them - but many of us have experience with 3.5, 5.0, 6.2 GM, and 5.7 Hemi and none here have said any of those are clearly better. The 6.2 is better, but the gap is pretty small, but other than that all the others are pretty comparable. Now if you've had HD gassers than you're either pulling our leg or something is seriously wrong with your truck. Recently I drove a 6.2 F250 with some gear in the bed and a trailer with 2 sleds - 1500 lbs towing, 1000 lbs payload, max - and you want to see a dog while towing, my god that thing could barely do 60 mph without a downhill, take it up a 6% grade and it was full throttle to do 50 mph.

But first things first, get your truck re-geared. I don't remember if you said tire size all you've mentioned AFAIK is lift. For all we know you could have skipped leg day and still have 32's on there, but my guess with a 7" lift you're at least up to 37's. 37's on stock gearing is no bueno, even for mall crawling. Go get some new gears, put the RPM's back where Toyota designed them to be, then see how it tows. If it's still shitty, go get another one to compare it too because then something else is wrong.
