I have been trying and trying with an oil filter tool to get the filter cap off. I now have bloody knuckles and it is not budging.

Does anyone have any tips on doing this?

Lots of discussion on here - you absolutely need the right tool. Don't even try it without it. Something like this....

Agree^^^. That Motivx tool made for 3/8" drive. Use a drive adapter (3/8" to 1/2"), and then a 1/2" drive breaker-bar handle. If that's not enough, then add 1" pipe to extend the breaker bar handle until the filter cap does move. If you break the Motivx tool in the process, be sure to report back with your results.

I find it easier to use a 27mm socket on the oil filter tool.

I have the 27 mm socket tool. It also has a 3/8 inch square hole. I put PB Blaster on the thread and used a breaker bar. That solved it. Wow, I can't believe how much force that took!

Thank you all for your help!

That is the best answer if you already own a 27mm socket. The biggest socket in my set is 24mm. If the OP has to spring for a drive adapter, he should just buy the 27mm socket as you recommend.

Oophf! The torque specs are pretty low, they definately torqued that sucker.

The broken tool in the pic is not a Motivx tool. Panic after the Motivx tool breaks.

Torque spec on the filter housing is 18 ft-lbf. I noticed the next time I changed the oil that the filter housing seemed tighter than I left it. Engine operation heat and vibration may have some effect on the tightness, but enough to break a cheap tool.

I have one I bought at auto parts store. That was after buying a cast one which I broke. After dealership change I used a 2' bar on my 1/2" rachet with neighbor holding my legs. I know what 130 ft lbs feels like and I am sure that is what it was.

Yeah I'm concerned about it. I'm doing my own at 5000 miles and swapping the housing from the plastic one.

I have not had any trouble with the plastic housing. I have the Motivx tool and it fits very well - there are three lugs on the top of the housing on one side and you need to get those into the fingers on the tool to get a good grip on the housing. If you don't have the tool securely on the housing, with all the fingers engaged, I could see how it might break. I do torque it to spec every time I put it back on and still have to use a breaker bar to remove it.
