Bilstein 5160 install woes

I had my Bilstein 6112/5160s installed about 2 weeks ago. All seemed fine until I decided to shift the reservoirs and noticed the driver's side shock resi clamp covered in oil. Upon further inspection I saw the banjo was smashed tight up against the strut mount and the banjo seemed to have some play in it. I cleaned everything off and rechecked the banjo. Sure enough there was 2-3 drops on my finger as I wiped around the brass washer. The more I looked, I saw tons of oil sprayed back on the frame and leafs. And finally noticed pools of oil in my driveway.
Oh yeah, the passenger side shock mount has an indentation in the steel from where the banjo smacked it on that side, too!
I used a shop I've been to before, but they work on tons of trucks and seemed to be super familiar with this particular Bilstein setup.
What say you guys?
I really don't want 'rebuilt' shocks because I'm worried there could be unseen internal damage....

 

Unless I'm missing it, a shop installed them but you later shifted them, and now they are leaking? You might be stuck with that one unfortunately.

Looks like some body didn't read the directions. There's pictures too! Take it back and have them replace it at their cost. heres some pics of mine. The swivels should be 70 to 90 degrees apart at the front of the shock. The hose should not touch anything, it should float.

 

I increased my angle to around 100 degrees because the hose wanted pop out towards the tires but you get the idea. Id take it back to the shop. these things are stated very clearly in the directions that come with the shocks and the pictures are very clear on the directions. Also that scrape on the inside of the shock mount is highly suspicious. they shouldn't swivel

 

Sounds like he was back there to change them but saw the damage before he did it. If he shifted them to that position hes SOL I think.

 

I wish the Toytec resis mounted in a bracket like that. It just looks beefier like that IMO.

 

You could buy the Bilstein ones and have them powder coated! They 5160 don’t come with these they were extra. They are a different part number and they werent cheap. One of my only gripes.

 

Yeah I'll have to see if they would fit. Nothing is cheap these days.

 

I ended up buying these for my 5160s. They well built like the expensive bilstein ones w/o their fancy sticker. Plus they come with a bottle opener!

 

No. As I was shifting the reservoirs, because I wasn't happy with their location, I noticed the oil on the shock body.
And I'm happy I did, unless I wouldn't have noticed the leak until later AND I realized that the reservoir mount screws were pretty much finger tight with no loctite or even grease on them.

 

Gotcha. That should be on the installation shop.

 

Yikes, probably should have just installed them yourself. Just nuts and bolts very easy to do a rear shock, If you can change wheel you can change a rear shock. I feel for you but I doubt the shop will do anything.

 

This is why I like to do stuff myself. You can’t trust people to do a simple task the correct way. Plus this would take less than a hour to swap these out yourself. Don’t even have to get the wheel off the ground.

 

I agree 100%. I had a bunch of other stuff done as well... Front shocks, shackles, bearing drops, etc..and I simply didn't have the time, space, tools and resources to do it myself. I was more than happy to have this local shop do it. Turnaround was quick, they were professional in speaking with me, yada yada yada...
I'll let you know how it all works out. But now I'm worried about 'what the hell else did they $&#@ up?!'

Like others who DIY - you don’t have to “deal with the shop” when they screw up something. It’s a PITA to have to run your truck back to have them fix something they should’ve done right in the first place!
