What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Because I'm stupid and do things like this... Does turning the dash lighting dimmer switch all the interior lights on?

Done that a few times in other cars.

 

Nice. I thought a HU and speakers would be good. Then I added the powered sub. Figured if I am going to spend about 40 hours on acoustic work, I'm going to treat myself to a 5 channel amp and the subs. The acoustic work, I knew, would take several days and I am just busting it out. There are car parts everywhere around my house and the misses is very understanding as she will be driving the truck a bunch too.

 

So after a few hours of expletives, banging on a driveline and some lithium grease.... The drive line is done.
I honestly didnt think to take pictures while beating the fire out of these yolks (no yokes were harmed in the replacement of these u-joints)
Until I climb under and take some New u-joint pics, I present to you the damage

 

Start by replacing all the old bulbs back in. Then if that doesn’t work put the old relay back in. If that doesn’t work, then some wires were mangled in the process at the foot well.

 

Does this count?

 

What falls into place? I’m worried about getting the steering shaft to line up correctly in the splines of the steering rack. Does it only go in one way? It looks like some standard splines to me.

I've replaced every pay panel on the truck aside from the cab and the hood.

 

Oof. Been there unfortunately. My 04 was clean when I bought it so I took it and had the rockers Rhino lined.

I think I patched the rockers on my Cherokee 3 times before the rest of the body was too bad to worry about.

 

Set the tie rods even. Put the rack in... keep the wheel straight. You want even amount of threads for the tie rods on each side with the truck going straight... personally I just throw the rack in so it’s straight, put the shaft on, then remove the steering wheel to make it straight.. it’s easier for me that way since I have the alignment rack. (And no risk of damage to the spiral cable)

 

I’ve shot PB Penetrator up in those rocker holes in the past. The holes are still covered with those square foam covers. I need to do this again.

 

Mine are gone but the place that did the Rhino also does Ziebart so after the liner was done they oiled everything and used plastic plugs on all the open holes.

 

That's ultimately why I chose the JL xd600/6v2. It's a super-compact footprint, lots of great features, and with 6 channels you can bridge in a variety of ways. My plan is to use 4 channels for F/R left and right, then bridging the final 2 channels to my dual-1ohm Kicker CompRT 8s (206CWRT81). Figure 1ohm DVC would give me the option running bridged in series @4ohm load or running stereo in series @2ohm to keep a solid load. Probably should have thought about this more, but I bought the speakers before deciding on an amp (they were on sale) and wanted some flexibility with impedance. Wiring in DVC series looks cleaner to me.

Anyway, JL makes rock-solid amps. I have a couple that are a good 10yrs old, I had in a previous truck. I think a 600v1 or a 500v1 and a 450v4 or something? Just sitting in a storage bin and they hammer! Too bad they were too large to fit neatly into this Gen1, or I'd be using them here.

Staying in line with the thread though, this is what I did today: Installed a USB AUX port in my hidden center console cubby.

Here is where I am at:


MLV on the floor and back wall is done. Putting in the amp, I thought, should be quite simple and I decided to run my own speaker wire to the speakers: two sets for each front speaker so that a dsp could be added later. Well, I hooked everything up and went to test and the HU doesnt turn on now. Checked the dome fuse, the acc fuse: both okay as well as all other fuses in under the dash and in the engine. I plugged in the A/C unit and the cig. lighters to make sure nothing funny there. Still no dice.

I have been going at this truck, 12 hour days in 100+ heat, for a while now. I thought this would be an easy mod. Time to chase down electrical...

 

My new HU has a fuse on the back of the unit, might check there?

 

Check that the clock is plugged in. I think I heard that needs to be as well

Is your clock plugged in? That will kill the accessory circuit if it’s not

 

After 2 days I just turned the key. I still have to pull a new video output to the overhead monitor but that's easy. I already repulled the audio last year and now I dont need it (it's just a video monitor now, the new head unit plays the DVDs), so I'll use it as a pull string and rip it through

 

The kids are going to be pumped. The sound is phenomenal compared to stock

 

So I tried plugging in the A/C harnesses, the cig lighter harnesses, and every fuse was checked at least twice. What could it be??? Turns out that the ground for the HU is through the antenna, the only thing I didnt plug back in. Ha!

I think I am going to change this ground as I had a ground loop issue with the front tweeter before all this: buzzing at constant vol. and freq. I'm now also getting a loud pop from the speakers when I take out the key, even though they are not connected to the HU?? Maybe the factory amp, which is still stuffed in the dash is still connected and interacting with them. I hate to think I need to dig that guy out and rewire everything around it. But if so, now is the time.

On second thought, since I am running new wires to the speakers and removing the factory, that "should" eliminate any factory amp interaction. I hope.

By the way, I found a "hidden" 12V source in the glove box. It is not obvious, at least not to me being on the "roof" of the box.

 

It's a Jenson. Cheaper unit but after bypassing everything and putting in new speakers it'll be an easy swap if I want something nice in the future. I have an old Jenson dvd unit in the center console that is 10+ years old, hopefully the head unit gives me the same life

 

Is this a Sequoia? If not I'd like more details about the AC contols...
