Removing water spots from vinyl wrap

I gave the Tundra her first wash after getting the matte vinyl wrap. It seems that there’s water spots all over it now and I can’t get them off. I already tried alcohol. I don’t want to ruin it!

who’s a pro at this stuff and how do I remove those spots?!

any recommendations on protectant seals after I remove the spots? Thanks in advance!

Should be a cleanser spray just for matte vinyl surfaces. I normally claybar water spots, but depends on severity of them. I had them on my windows and iron x wouldn't remove them. I had to buff them out with a pad and compound.

 

Apparently clay bar is not too good for matte vinyl. I’ll search for the spray...

I usually try a 50/50 vinegar and water mix first on paint, but not sure it’s safe for a wrap. I’d get with the people who applied it and see what they say.

 

Barkeepers Friend is cheap and works great on glass, especially water spots. Just make sure to avoid the paint.

 

I found this advice on Reddit for getting spots off of matte decals. Cheap enough to give it a try:

“With a clean microfiber using aresol window cleaner (free from amonia and vinegar) spray the decal in sections and wipe with the microfiber in one direction once or twice turning the towel to a new side often. Hope this helps!”

 

what color is the wrap? I have matte black of the fj hood and deal with this. Today I will test out a few products and circle back I always have spots on it after rain. I’ve heard you can coat vinyl but have not done that yet but I would imagine it would help. I’ll do it to my hood because it’s a lab rat when it comes to this stuff.

So tried out a few products today on the matte black and here is where I landed.


this is after a quick waterless wipe with spiked punch as you can see the water spots are there.

first try was invisible glass

it helped just a little.

next up was CarPro spotless

this seemed to get rid of most the spots very easy but there are a few holding strong.

last chemical guy matte detailer

cleaned it up a little more.

end results
CarPro spotless and chemical guy matte detailer seam neck and neck dealing with this issue. I think either one will help you get close put not perfect. I kinda want to put a machine on it with some polish to see if I can get it perfect and then try to coat it with cquartz just cause I have it and see if it will provide protection for this. Also I’m curious if it will change the look of the vinyl at all.

I’m not a huge fan of cg but like other members have stated some of the products they offer are good and I believe the matte detailer is one example of this. I know CarPro makes a matte or vinyl specific coating but I have not tried it so my help with that is limited.

 

My vinyl guy said 99 percent isopropyl but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ll try this week and report back. You can ceramic coat the vinyl and it helps with water. The manufacturer (3m or Avery) recommends immediately to squeegee the surface dry or use compressed air to remove water to eliminate spotting. My vinyl I’d matte black and pine green.

I guess pressure can swirl the vinyl. They recommend being as soft with it as possible. You don’t want to creat heat either. I never thought it would be so finicky! Polishing matte will make the vinyl more glossy I heard.

 

I heard this too and I’ll try as a last resort. I’m tempted to buy a small sheet of vinyl and water spot it to try this safely.

Hope that works for ya. Unfortunatey sometimes a wrap will stain. I normally just give it a wash/dry and wipe it down with matte sealant to get a clean finish.

 

I was driving through a blizzard a week after I rewrapped my truck and cleaned my windows with the squeegees at the gas station and the liquid that dripped down the doors has permanently stained it.
