Chrome delete front (grill and bulge) options

Hi,
I've been prowling this forum for some time now and well... Realized chrome delete is the way to go. Recently replaced all of my chrome emblems with black and would like your opinions/suggestions on the front grill and bulge. I have a 2019 limited tundra trd 4x4 (attitude black) and want to delete the chrome.
The 2019 TRD Pro grill (set) and faux cover is super pricey. I thought about 2018 platinum grill set but not sure whether my 2019 sensors/emblem fit or I'd have to buy a new one. Also, this will be kinda a step back in year (2018 vs 2019).

Suggestion and opinions greatly appreciated.

 

I'm cheap so I did a $10 black plasti dip job.
Looks good IMO and if I want to reverse it I can just peel it off.

I did 5 good coats and the durability is top notch. Road trips, auto car washes, rocks; nothing has made it chip/peel so far.

Some people buy color matched pieces but lots of times (especially on white and grey/silver) the color match is terrible and looks worse than the chrome did.

Another good option that should not be too expensive, or permanent, is to wrap them.

 

Thanks for the suggestion! I was trying to avoid dip/wrap but I will give it another look. I've heard it may last 3-5 years and is it easy to do? How about when it chips or peels... Is it easier to remove than the emblems in order to redo?

 

I’ve been looking at all my options and decided to start with one of the lesser cost options. I ordered some Avery matte black vinyl and will try that first. Pretty confident about my ability to do a decent job, just more concerned with heat from the exhaust on the rear bumper end cap.

 

I just bought a 2020 SR in Barcelona Red. It came with the painted grill surround and hood bulge. I am thinking about having it painted, or just ordering the old Pro grill from Sparks parts. I used to have a Tacoma TRD Off-road and I can say that the Cement Gray on the grill surround was slightly different than the paint on the hood. Plastic and metal just come out different.

 

Wouldn't the older TRD pro grill require you to purchase after market brackets for your sensors? I thought about this too for my 2019 but plasti dip is starting to sound like a good option.
I'd prefer to just change it with OEM but there's so many different things that needs to be considered... Brackets for older grill, faux sensor cover for the current ($$$), size of the emblem vs platinum grill...

 

Ya, using the old Pro grill will require an aftermarket bracket for the TSS. I'm considering buying one, or just keeping my grill insert (with all the TSS stuff) and selling the Pro grill with my SR surround and bulge. My truck would look like a Sport or a SR5 SX package.

 

I'm probably going with a 2018 platinum grill... I think they look close enough to 2019 TRD Pro grill but much cheaper.
Also, does anyone know whether the 2019 TRD PRO mirror caps will fit my 2019 limited? Want to rid the chrome out for color matched but not sure whether they will fit because of part numbers are different.

Seems like sparks parts is the only place to go for all these pieces, bumper caps, bulge and grill surround, anyone know if they will be doing a labor day sale out of curiosity?

 

Yep. You can order the mirror caps painted from Toyota. Different part number, but same fit.

1 lowlife-appreciate it. I've got the ultimate OEM thread bookmarked. Your truck looks bomb... Will slowly get mine there but it's going to be a slow process. Got a 1 year old and everytime I think about buying anything for myself that's not necessarily well... I stress out and feel so much guilt lol

 

i used PD on my bumper ends in Oct 2018. 22 months and 25000 miles later, they are still holding up pretty good:


From 3-4 feet away, I doubt a casual observer would notice that the finish on the truck is any different than the finish on the bumpers.

Close up, you can see slight damage from branches on logging roads, pulling into shrubs, and rock chips.



All in all, it’s a very durable coating that holds its color depth and luster surprisingly well, at least for the MGM.

Where there have been nicks that exposed the chrome underneath, my repair has been to spray some of the PlastiDip into a cup and use a small brush to fill in the nick, chip, or tear.

 

I meant only place as in getting pre painted pieces (silver sky) thought cool springs stopped sending them pre painted? I may be wrong I don't follow this kinda stuff super closely

 

I don't care for PD but that looks pretty good.
Did you pull the parts off to PD them?

When I did mine, I did loosen the fogs and pushed them into the bumpers in front. I also pried up the plastic on the rear bumpers.

After doing it, I don’t think these steps are necessary. I think the plastic edges can be masked in place, and the dip and glossifier applied just fine.

I did 5 coats of the color and 3 coats of clear/glossifier. I’d be tempted to try 5 or 6 coats of the clear next time.

‘Next time’ Is the big IF. I am increasingly tempted to powder coat the bumper ends, and also to paint the grill trim and bulge. The duplicolor MGM is a dead match, and I’m pretty sure I could get results that will make me happy.

 

I’m going to take a leap of faith and paint the grill trim and bulge. I ordered 2k primer, Lexus/ Toyota black 218 paint and 2k high gloss top coat in spray max spray cans. Prep the hell out of it and start painting.
