I have experience with Joying on my Tacoma and it has worked great.

I see the most popular Hu's here are the Dasaita and the Tesla style screen..

Anyone who has experienced both, which one is generally considered to be more reliable and better quality? I like the aesthetics of the tesla but wouldn't mind the Dasaita if it works better..

Any other suggestions like Joying would be welcomed as well.

The best Android HU for the Tacoma imo, they make an all touch screen buttons version as well but physical volume knob is the best.

It may be wonderful and all that but I think I m against internet on a head unit. I see so many *ssholes on there phone while driving on the freeway. That s one thing, but having to look away to view a headunit while driving is going to cause accidents. I know. My excellon is touch screen, and I ve had a few close calls with it just changing stations. After which, I now try to set my stations, or playlist before I start out, so I don t have to mess with it while I m driving. An android headunit would be too much

It's all about discipline. I like the idea of a smart head unit because I can just use voice commands so there will be less distractions while driving. I drive an average of 100 miles a day and I had close calls just looking at dash cluster information. Sammy Davis Jr. once shared his experience with the highway patrol for speeding. "If I look at the speed I am going all the time, I'm taking my eyes off the road."

I think it depends on the person but generally I agree with that @SprinterAE86 said, it's all about discipline.

I run YouTube all day long while on long trips and never had a close call but I also don't glance at it for more than 2 seconds and also don't do it during heavy traffic or cars around me.

The biggest thing though is voice commands through the steering wheel are far superior to anything oem.

You can order it to open Netflix, and play a certain show, open pandora and start playing a certain song/Playlist, Open YouTube and do the same, call a specific person, Google maps somewhere etc, you never really have to take your eyes off the road.

Thanks, the Dasaita reminds me more of my current one in the Taco and my buddy has one on his corolla and seems to work nice.

Tesla screen seems much better in terms of aesthetics but I hear some people having issues and paying $100 for some custom firmware to make it run properly on top of the $700 for it?.. Just a bit weird imo.

What issues were you having btw?

My BIL has the Tesla style unit in his 1794' Its been installed for over a year now and did not need Sergey's additional firmware to make it run correctly. He also didnt pay $700 for it and it came from Phoenix.

He has, however, added Sergey's firmware to enhance the unit, but it wasn't required. And also, hasn't had any issues with his pre/post firmware update.

I do believe there are also updates for the Dasaita and Joying units over on xda-developers website, if someone chooses to update their unit.

From what I've seen with the Tesla units, some are shipped out with issues and have to be exchanged or refunded. Remember, these units have so many settings in them
for various setups/vehicles, so it does take some patience and fiddling with to get locked in.

Im just waiting for him to buy the newest fastboot unit, so he can give me his old one... :fingerscrossed:

Anyone who is selling at Amazon has great customer service so is Dasaita.
any Product is great until it stops working as designed and you need support.
Phenoix Android has buncha clowns running the support.
I got the first unit that they have out. It was a group buy and I paid $500 for it. First version had bugs which they returned and issued the credit after 8 months of owning. I got the new one without buttons for $550 and that was a shit show. I said forget it and got Dasaita.

FYI, I have patience but that was 14-16 months of torture.

Tacoma interiors are so much better than ours. Mine is a scratched up mess. I need a new HU as mine is starting to get quirky. Sometimes I wish Lexus made a pickup.. Lol

I get it brother - seems many units work well or they dont. Guess my BIL was one of the lucky ones.
You stuck it out longer that others Ive read about. Dont think I would have. But I know where one is that actually works...lol

Haha that's what I was thinking when typing that:D

The most I ever do is glance for a second but tbh most of the time I have the map taking up my full screen or dual Map/YouTube screen so not much of a reason to look at the screen.

As a field technician I also spend a lot of idle time in my vehicle, and this is where it truly shines;)

Yup, the interior is one of the biggest reasons why I didn't go Tundra right away lol and not needing a full size.

If there wasn't any decent Android HU for the Tundra I wouldn't even be doing the swap honestly, it's a game changer.

The deal on the Tundra is too good to pass up though so hopefully worst case scenario I sell it after a year for a next gen Tundra or Tacoma and lose very little in depreciation.

Dasaita retains HVAC controls and puts the horizontal screen slightly above the console.

Phoenix Tesla Style is more flush and discreet, vertical screen, but if your unit dies, you don't have full control of your HVAC. Mine's approaching 2y, no issues. Make sure you get the new PX6 version if this route.

In regards to distracted driving, true on self-discipline. You get used to it and I don't look at vids which are primarily for the passengers. I'll get a ticket where I am if caught so I switch it to the static home screen and I'm pretty cognizant of blue around me (see discreet reason above). This one shows the real speedo because it's GPS based, my stock dash one measures off due to larger tires.

Did you pay for the special firmware? Not sure what it does and what issues people are having that need to be fixed.

The AC problem is a big issue in case it ever dies, something else to consider.

I gotta be honest, I really like the way you have your interior setup, looks so much more modern.

How hard was it to paint the actual HU black or do they sell a dark colored version?

I'm running stock FW with CarWebGuru launcher as that home screen above. I heard Sergei's FW is awesome but I'm happy with what I got.

On a reboot the physical buttons still work for HVAC and hazard lights, so if the unit died, you can still operate it blindly (no screen) I think, not 100%.

It's not hard to take it apart to paint it, there's also a few threads about people here painting or wrapping the other parts of the dash.

Join here for info, latest deals. It’s also the best source for problem solving. If your spouse isn’t techy or an android person, it can be frustrating to get it working the way he wants as they come with no instructions whatsoever, not even how to install (help again in link). That’s why many prefer the plug and play big name brands instead (Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood) and just use native CarPlay or AndroidAuto.

There’s a few threads like this:
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/silver-taming.32916/

Use paint for plastic, sand with >1000 and prime first. Everything is matte but the HU surround is shiny.
