Linex Screwed Up

Well.......

Took my 2 week old Tundra Limited to Linex to have the bed sprayed. I have had a Linex liner in previous trucks and love the product. Does not fade like others including the one from Toyota.

Well.....this time my experience was not that good. I should have looked the truck over better before I left. When I got home I noticed some overspray between the cab and bed on the passenger side. Called Linex and the person that answered the phone said a little methanol will take it right off. Well....I have a friend that is into racing and being the impatient person that I am.....got a little from him. Well.....it started to remove the overspray, but turned the paint yellow and removed some paint on a ridge between the cab and bed. I was pi$$ed. Truck only has 250 miles on it......I have not even put gas in it yet. I should have left well enough along and let the Linex dealer remove it, but I was a bit too impatient.

Well.....pretty much accepted the fact that the truck needs to see a body shop to have the paint fixed.

THEN.....today I decide to go out and give it a wash. Then I find a fine mist of overspray on the passenger rear door just under the previous area mentioned above. I am fairly certain the finer material is the premium UV coating. I am not touching this. Linex will address this.

Also noticed that at least two bolts for the bed rails are stripped and not fully seated.

Not sure if I got the new guy or if the person doing my truck was just having a bad day. They were not even busy.....my truck was the only one there when I dropped it and the only one there when I picked it up about 5 hrs later.

I did not get the quality job I would expect from them. This dealer had been around for years and I have used them on previous trucks.

There are other things too.....did not cover the latches on the tailgate, centering pin for front header is missing....(this may not be able to go back because of the added thickness of the liner), front header is not completely covered....can still see white paint through the liner. Was definitely a rush job for sure.

Anyway....I will stop ranting. Looks like my new ride will need to see a body shop for some paint work. I am hoping Linex steps up and covers the cost. I am thinking the bed may have to be pulled to fix the damage done by the methanol.

Not yet.... was so disappointed earlier......just finished washing it and put it back in the garage. I will get pics before I bring it back to Linex.

while your at it, get a log from your phone. Cell phone or land line showing you called Line-x, hopefully with a time stamp further proving you called line-x.

 

What state are you in? Others need to be aware.

 

I had a bad experience with Linex on my truck too. There were little lumps in the liner from drips while they sprayed and a couple small spots of over spray. One spot by the tailgate where there was over spray the tech tried to rub off in front of me and took a small chip of paint. I wasn't very happy. Luckily the chip is between the tailgate and bed and you can't see it. They ended up respraying the bed to smooth it all out too. It just amazes me how people don't take any pride in their work.

 

Maybe that is why yours was the only one there?

 

It just amazes me how people don't take time to inspect work before leaving the shop.

The Line-X shop that sprayed the bed on my '07 screwed up, I caught the mistakes before leaving the shop, they corrected what they could and deducted $250.00 from the total.

 

Yeah, I would never have tried to fix it myself; now that you've done as they suggested (and more importantly, since there's no written log of the conversation), they can say you damaged your paint yourself. :/

I hope you can get them to fix the issues with a minimum of fuss.

Before I start bashing them online, I am going to give them an opportunity to make this right. I will report back with the location and a good or bad outcome.

Well, this particular Linex Dealer has been around for at least 13-14 years. They sprayed a truck for me in 2008 that was perfect, and another on 2013 that again was fine.

I did inspect before I left, apparently not good enough. The overspray on the door is a very fine mist, I did not even notice it until I washed the truck. It is not a heavy blotched coating like you would expect. I am thinking it is the UV inhibitor that is part of the premium liner that got out somehow. The bolts on the bed rails that are stripped are also hard to see unless you make it a point to look that close.


Overall the liner itself looks fine, they just missed the details big time.

 

Yeah, lesson learned here.....I should have taken it back and let them handle it. I have never been known for my patience.

 

That sucks. A coworker of mine had his truck sprayed by Line-X and they screwed it up so bad that he had them strip it and spray it again.

 

How do they even remove this stuff?

 

Oh hey, me too man; definitely not judging you on this one. I've just learned over time that me being impatient costs me a LOT more than forcing myself to be patient. LOL

 

They Sandblasted it and then used an angle grinder with a heavy knot brush for the hard to get spots. The bed was a mess after the removal but they then sprayed it again and all was fine.

 

Make sure they didn't spray over the drain holes (or access holes?) in the back of the bed.

 

Very sorry to hear that this happened to your new truck. When I bought my 2020, having factory bed spray liner was a big must for me. I do not want to deal with this imperfections from aftermarket spray liner. It would drive me nuts.

 

Who does the spray for Toyota? Mine came with it when I bought it new. I thought factory did it but someone said the "fleet" people do it. Wonder who they contract with?

 

Mine was outsourced by my dealer to the LineX dealer. I confirmed with my salesman and then contacted the LineX guy to confirm it was Premium, lifetime warranty etc.

Dropped off at Toyota, picked up at Toyota, work done by LineX dealer.

 

Well....none of the liners are “factory”, they are all applied at the port.

My brother has a port installed liner in his 2014 Tundra and it has faded to a grey chalky color. The Linex is a superior product by far. I had it in my 2013 F150 that I sold to get this Tundra and it looked like the day it was sprayed. It also spent about 75-80% of the time outside in the sun. Linex was applied in my F150 at this same shop and it was fine.

Spoke to the owner today, he was very apologetic. I am going by there Friday for him to address these issues. Will report back after that visit.

It is unfortunate that it happened, but it will be fixed as good as new in the next couple of weeks.

This thread gives some insight into the 'factory' bed liner. It is outsourced but I guess it could get screwed up just as easily, except they likely do the Tundra day in day out so their guys know how to like the back of their hands.

I got Line X and the shop did good. There are a few small spots of overspray but it is so mild I can't find it half the time. They did spray over the drain plugs in the bed. I asked about it and the guy said they have to as once they spray the liner, the plastic plugs rarely fit well, as they are tight to begin with, and if you actually needed them for a drain or hose of some sort, you just drill through it to the size you need. I don't forsee myself doing anything like that, so I would rather them be sprayed over and not pop out and get lost. You can also use a razor knife and score the edges around and push it out from the back, and then replace it if needed. Again, I don't have a need for an extra hole in my bed. Either way, good luck. I like my Line-X. I think they did well with it.

 

Just for future reference I did Raptor pro and realized I had over spray. I waited until it was overcast, slightly raining, and got out a medium clay bar with plenty of detail spray. It all came off and my paint barely even knew it. I was worried when it first happened and noticed after washing I had fine fibers left on my truck.

This is my new Tundra.....not much difference in color. Lighting not the greatest in my garage.

It is DIY I laid it on pretty thick with a little curing time from start to stop. The key is keeping the Raptor gun at least 24” away, good cleaning ,and sanding. All in $200 we’ll worth it. I had the tape, sandpaper, degreaser, and alcohol.
