Hi all, feel like this is something that has it's own thread but couldn't find one for the first gen. Where have you all installed your onboard air compressors?

    Thanks

I keep a portable Viar in the cab, but I believe there is open real estate on top of the passenger side fender behind the airbox where one may be squeezed in, especially if you dont have abs.

I have seen guys go under the truck inside the frame channel and run a line with connection to an easy spot, but I would prefer a dry location.

Nope, no thread I’ve seen for first gens. I’m lucky to know and live near @papasmurf who custom-fab’d a mount. It’s a one-off built with lots of back-and-forths between the truck and the welder, at the back over the passenger front wheel well.E4E00FAF-EC51-42AC-9F05-29B8D72876AF.jpg
    0C0C45CE-C2D6-4BFE-A13C-D87E86F8C878.jpg
I haven’t seen a mount available after-market. I know a few later gen guys putting ‘em underneath the bed, or up under the bedsides... but I don’t know if you live somewhere where the roads gets salted, or you have frequent water crossings; might not be good.

My internet isn’t letting me upload pics today, but I’ll try to post some when it works.

Under hood is the spot I was thinking but would need a bracket I think.

Yes please post a pic when you can. That would be very helpful. That’s the same spot I was thinking of mounting it.

@papasmurf, any chance you still have the specs/cad file for the mount for the compressor?

Another option is air in a tank and strap it in your bed. Eliminates the electrical expense and heat wearing down on the pump motor plus the cost of motor. I’ve never had either one, but read some guys who have and prefer the air in tank. Not sure of costs.

No specs, no cad file. That’s my point. He just looked it over and came up with something to fit as a one-off. You’ll probably either have to do the same, or find someone that can. As far as I know, there’s no one that’s designed these for 1st gens.

The Hand Man made a good point about heat. In our 4runner it’s mounted behind the air box on the passenger side. We live in a hot and DUSTY environment, so I decided to remote mount the compressor intake. The intake filter will screw right off the ARB comp, you put a barbed nipple and I ran the hose and pancake filter inside right above the passenger feet. That way it’s generally sucking in cool and most importantly; clean air. I’ve got a dual Arb waiting for me to pull time out of my ass to install. If I come up with a mount anytime soon I’ll let you know and I’ll make two

Sooooo, I’ve got a single on our 4runner, I bet the mounts are close if not the same, or I bet the double is bigger mount, but still has the same holes as the single. Either way, I’ll CIO(check it out) for you. Where on the planet do you live?

Good lord, i forgot how heavy the dual is!
    I forgot I never popped its Che......seal.
So I’m sure it’s the same mounting pattern, I just have two instead of 1.
If I dream something up I’ll get with you

Are you going to clock the Lil expansion tank thingy? I think I did so it lays flatter in the engine bay. I’ll take pics how I did in the 4runner tomorrow so you can see what I mean

That silver canister you were holding it by; can be turned or “clocked” in either direction to better suit mounting possibilities

Got the compressor installed. Made a pretty simple bracket for it and used rubber door stops as washers to level it out. After a few tries with cardboard I made a metal piece which my machinist friend turned into a finished product...
If anyone is interested, friend said he could make these for about $20. 2B5E7C35-3FD3-40AF-B228-3B15D7A7B322.jpg

Gotta mount with compressor straight up and after tightening bolts you can adjust...
