Haven't seen another thread specifically on this. I just got my first rock to the windshield and it's a bad one :annoyed:. Spider webbed instantly and about the size of a half-dollar.

Just wondering if anyone has noticed a decrease in rocks to the windshield after installing one and which one?

    Thanks...

Probably not. But the are guaranteed to look like a cheap add-on piece of crap. My advice is to make sure your car insurance includes free glass, that's what I do.

The chip repair through insurance is a must.

I have both, $150 for replacement and no cost for chip repairs.

Don't know what ins. you have, but Farmers has $0 replacement. I've had at least 4 done between our vehicles.

    But...but..."you're in good hands".

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yes check around...I recently made the change. I think for a while there were certain rules in certain states as I have lived in several at this point.

Lets answer the original question. A bug deflector will do nothing for the rocks. But I had one on my 1st Gen and it was amazing for the bugs and it also did not look like utter crap being on the 1st Gen. I now have a 2019 and we all know the deflector made for the modern Tundra really looks terrible. Midwest in spring maybe but otherwise forget it.

I had the oem one on since I bought my truck and it didn't do anything for rocks. Even for bugs, it doesn't seem to work very well. Apparently the deflectors look terrible... I didn't think it was that bad but I just took mine off last week.

    ^ I'll agree with this..
I've never seen one on a Gen 2 or 3 that looked very good.

Looking back at my 2005, I'm having doubts it looked that good...:eek2:

I think they look and function like crap.
Mine broke on the initial test drive and damaged the clear hood film. Apparently wasnt taped on good enough.
I had the dealer fix the film and NOT replace the ugly ass deflector.

Had it, took it off, glad I did. This is an OEM part in Canada.

This 3m tape crap can't be good for paint, trapping moisture etc

    Lots of shenanigans.
I would check your state, FL requires insurance companies to give a new windshield if it's chipped or broken.

The AVS bug deflector worked fine on my 07. The deflector/rock shields that I've seen for the 2014 and up look like total crap and not sure exactly what purpose they serve. Totally useless imho.

Looks aside, it will save that part of your hood from getting paint chips. My nearly 19 year old hood still looks new. I do seem to get fewer bugs on my windshield than any vehicle I've owned but of course I can't prove it's not a coincidence.

I can't speak for current gens but I don't think mine looks too bad.

The AVS's I used on my 07 looked ok and actually worked, but the deflectors for the 3rd gens either look ridiculous or serve minimal protection if any. :homer:

Kind of on topic, but a different route. The RainX windshield repair kit is legit. I have fixed 7 spots across my 3 cars - 6 of them are as good as a glass shop, 1 is 75%. Cheap kit, and takes no time to do it.

In SC, our laws require the insurance companies to pay for chips and if its in the line of sight, replacement at no cost. But for the time involved, I'll keep doing it myselfz
