Oil Capacity with the 5.7 V8

I am a new owner of a 2014 5.7 V8 Tundra. A good friend of mine also has a Tundra 2012 with the same engine. He is telling me the oil capacity when changing oil with filter is 9 quarts. My manual and our local dealer is saying 7.9 quarts with filter. Which is it ??

 

7.9 quarts.

 

Mine takes 8 1/2.

 

I suppose that as long as its between Add and Full on the dipstick, that's the best that can be expected.

 

I was wondering would that be with a filter change ? Or did the 2012 have a bigger oil reserve ? My dealer told me 7.9 and I'm guessing that's with a filter change..

 

I've never heard of an engine having an "oil reserve", I think they circulate all the oil all the time. I suspect that your friend may be mistaken. You might suggest to him that he consult a manual specific to his model year, I'd wager that it reads identical to what csuviper posted above. If he's overfilling his crankcase, that's not a good thing either.

 

I thought my friend is mistaken also ! I think 7.9 qts is the correct number. I will tell him to re-read the manual....

 

I hope that's not a 1/2 qt to much ?

 

Depends on how full the crank case is to start with if 1/2 quart more in it..

 

Bigger question is this guys... DOES IT HAVE A OIL COOLER? if it does your oil change volumes will be off some do too gravity feed off the cooler while a oil change is going on until start up.

 

He does have the oil cooler,with the tow package. So far the general consensus is 7.9 (8 qts.) for a oil change in the big 5.7 V-8 ! I don't know where he is getting 9.5 qts ????

 

if the oil cooler is draining it will change.. toyota by the book DOESNT add in oil coolers unless it says with oil cooler included.

 

Mike, wouldn't the manual say: total oil replacement is !! When doing a oil change, I would expect the oil in the oil cooler would also be needed to be changed at that point. Why mix old oil with new ? Do we know how much oil is in the oil cooler and is there a way of dumping it when doing the oil change...

 

NO. reason is simple the owners manual doesnt include tow packages or anything else the dealer or you have put on the engine. ITS A BASELINE just for the engine nothing else unless the manual states other wise. With this, for example here you have 8 quarts of oil new and one quart left(oil cooler) over ratio is 1/8 mix or 12.5% left over in used oil. That it not enough to worry about. TRUST ME.

T0 be honest your engine holds extra 1/2quart if not more oil on top of the engine in a valve trains section in the valleys of the engine. They are there for a REASON to keep dry starts to a small percent when starting. Not including other places where oil collects and you cant get in a oil change.

The oil cooler doesnt need the oil changed as soon as you start the engine the oil pump will let that oil flow and it will mix old back to my first statement again dont worry about use oil.

Today's oil is MORE advance of todays engines by a long shot. When i say long shot im taking 7 to 10 years AHEAD of todays 2015 engines. I did i LONG write up on the board of oil.

Maybe he means reservoir

 

Maybe he has a oversize aftermarket oil pan???

 

You guys Im not a jack ass. I change it myself so I put 8 in start and run 2-5 min shut off check and then have to add another 1/2 of quart to read good on the stick. So there for it takes 8 1/2 quarts.

 

The way you are doing it, is correct by letting the engine run before checking levels for a final time.

So guys he is doing it the correct way. Measure twice cut once guys.

My question is: most of the replys have been for the 5.7 V-8 is 8 qts...... where is the 1.8 qts of the extra oil going ? Is Toyota Service Dept. scamming us at the oil change service ?

 

I know this thread is almost one year old but I had to chime in for my 2011 Tundra oil change. When I first did the oil change, I was expecting to fill in 7.4 qts of oil like other people mentioned. But to my surprise, my truck took whopping 9 qts of oil. I double checked the oil level each half qt of oil added after 7 qts already poured. And it took total 9 qts of oil. I bought my truck used. My truck is limited edition 5.7 V-8 engine. So it always been 9 qts for me.

 

I know this answer. My 2015 Toyota Tundra Pro just had the oil changed and it held 8.4 quarts!

 

I wonder what the heck the differences are, why there are so many different results. When I had my truck in for the Cam Tower Leak, I got it back with the crank overfilled by quite a bit. It was easily over an inch above the full line on the dipstick no matter when I checked it. Overnight sit, full warm up then 10 minute sit, 15 minute run then 10 minute sit. Makes me wonder in the back of my mind if there might not be differing length dipsticks installed.

 

My 2016 Limited with the 5.7 also took 8.4 Quarts after a thorough drain with filter change!

I suppose that if nothing else, this discrepancy in amounts tells those of us that change our own oil that these figures should probably be prefaced with "approximately".
