I’ve got a 2017 SR5 4x4 with 5.7 and it has the factory trailer brake controller. I haven’t pulled a single thing in this truck or even hooked up a trailer. I turned the truck on to leave and this message pops up and won’t go away. Any ideas? I will disconnect battery when I get home to see if that clears it. Is this a known issue?

This happen to me today. I turn my truck off and CBBAA015-097F-408B-9A87-E6E296B246EF.jpg

The abs light/traction light were on. I talked with my tech and we going over what it could be, he also said it could just be a hiccup with the system. I took a nap with my 3 year, 2 hours later I went out to see what up and go for a drive. The lights went out 200’ft down the street.

    All is good.

We have basically the same mileage.

Don’t disconnect the battery, your dealer may need to codes on the ecm. The tech at my dealer said sometimes this systems will do this. I had pressed the traction bottom once to allow wheel spin and was at th bottom of driveway at a stand still. My driveway has an incline, so I was no moving and the rear wheels were spinning at low rpm for 5/6 seconds and the same warning light came on. We had snow today, that’s why the wheels were spinning. Hopefully it is just a hiccup like what happened to me.

Spoke with my dealer and they said disconnect battery. If it doesn’t clear it then take it in. I’ll let it sit over night to see if it takes care of itself

Sometimes this happens when there is a buildup of mud snow dirt on abs sensor. Go to car wash for 1 minute wash that off. If turning it off and waiting a few mins doesn’t fix it. I’ve driven like that on way home and it eventually turned off. Idk

Trucks clean lol. I live in Texas so no snow here. I bet it will go away. Just annoying to have this on a new truck.

Yeah as I was typing that out I was thinking wtf why does this even happen even if nothing is wrong. Oh well. I have other things to worry about

Just happened to me on my 2017 Tundra 1794 with about 50,000 miles. I have a code reader and there were no codes so disconnected the positive terminal on the battery, waited 30 minutes and reconnected battery cable. As earlier mentioned by other post, the first time you start the engine it dies after a couple of seconds. Restarted and didn't get the trailer cable error message on the information screen. Was also glad that all my radio and phone presets were not erased. Hasn't giving me any problems for five days now.

My 2018 did the same thing. I took it to the dealership and they had a known fix for it. They said that they see this with just enough regularity to have an answer from Toyota about what to do. 30 minutes later I was back on the road and has not happened again since. Try the dealership if you’re still under warranty.

My ‘16 CM TRD 4x4 just had every light pop up. Replaced the battery (since it had a dead cell and was the original)
Ended up being the rear drivers side bearing. It tripped the ABS sensor and apparently every other (4wd hi/low, traction control, you name it) drivetrain related light.

My 2018 started this yesterday, I have 42k on it so warranty is gone. This morning I was heading out on a trip so I disconnected the positive for 30 minutes and everything was fine, drove 3 hours stopped at a gas station and when I backed up it did it again. Took off positive terminal for 10 minutes, drove almost to Dallas. I stopped for gas 45 miles outside of Dallas and everything was fine. I got into Irving and was going through a drive through and it happened again. Does anyone have any idea on a DIY fix?

I’m guessing ABS sensor or wheel bearing. Took mine to Autozone to get a code reading, needed a battery. 1mi down the road, same dash lights again. Took it into Toyota, codes were for a rear wheel bearing. Apparently it trips the ABS/4wd hi & low/ trailer towing/LDS/ and traction control lights when an ABS sensor picks up the issue.

Will have to wait till it happens again but I have a code reader, nothing in the codes.

Called Toyota this morning, there is a recall on the 2018 TSS Anti-collision sensor, give them your VIN and they will verify it, they said that is what is causing the braking control problem. Made an appointment online and had it in for noon today. BTW if you have had a lift or level kit put on by a 3rd party you will have to sign a Non-Toyota approved verification form.

Well I got it back and the same thing happened again. Went through a car wash right after I left the dealer. Don't know if it has to do with moisture but seems like it.

2016 Tundra 160K miles. This same issue started for me about 10K miles ago. It went away from a short time but returned. I replaced all the ABS brake sensors but that didn't fix problem. Disconnected the battery, multiple times and still comes back on. Last time I checked it did not throw an error code. Anyone determine what the actual cause for this is and how to fix it?????

Mine did the same. I took it to dealership about a month ago. It was ABS sensor and wheel bearing.

This happened to my last truck when the a rear axle seal failed and oil built up on the wheel speed sensor.

I have the same “trailer brake controller error - contact dealer” problem in my 2017 Tundra.
I took it to the dealer and they told me I needed to replace the main computer in my truck for $1200.
I’m going to try unhooking the battery.
    Any other ideas?

My truck popped the error ~ 150 miles ago. I’m at 50k on a 2016. Dealer found the axle seal leaking and caused fluid build up on the right rear ABS sensor. I’ll have to inspect the diff breather valve to make sure it’s operating properly.

For those interested, I’m not in a position to replace the parts myself, will cost $1,100 for the repair.

update: rear bearing is going to be replaced under warranty. I’m trying to find a schematic for 2016 rear axle which shows all the parts. Service writer says the outer axle seal is leaking which caused the ABS sensor to fail. I have a hard time believing an “outer” seal is leaking, and not the inner. He’s saying I’m on the hook for the previous $1,100 seal and sensor replacement, but the bearing itself is covered. I told him to replace the inner seal as well and we can discuss further when I come in.

My truck just did this now. I’m on a road trip to sparks NV to visit family. 2019 tundra with only 12,000 miles on it. Hoping dealership can take me in tomorrow.
