Guys, hope I am not too late here.

Before I came to Canada, I liked Toyota's quality control. Toyota's quality is my belief.

I got a used 2012 4.6 Tundra in October 2019. About 1 month later, I got an engine light and 2 other lights. At the beginning I thought it was a normal for a 130,000 kilometers auto. Just like me in developing countries, no one cares about it, especially luxury brands, because the gasoline quality problem, their engine lights are always on. Usually, my solution is to remove the negative battery wire and restart it. And I didn't drive all the time, especially in the summer of 2020, it didn't matter, no engine lights.

But I got those faulty lights again at the end of 2020, I went to a shop to repair it, spent $1,100, replaced two valves, and then I felt that my Tundra had more power, however I was not happy I got to know that's is their mass quality accident...

The winter of 2020 is coming, and the engine light is on again. I am very upset. I must solve it completely this time, because even if I take off the negative wire of the battery every day, it can't work normally after a while. As soon as the engine temperature cools down, the fault light will light up immediately.

This time I removed the pump and opened the pump body. There is half a jar of yellow rust water in pump bank two. Checked the price of NAPA, a pump costs $350. Moreover, the valves and pumps will be broken again sooner or later for sure. This set will cost $2,800 at NAPA. This was unacceptable. I had to buy a set of bypass components, which cost US$500 and a tariff of more than 70 Canadian dollars. I killed this secondary air injection system forever.

Now, I am happy to tell everyone that because every breath is fresh air, the roar of my tundra on the road is amazing, and the fuel economy has been greatly improved, from the earliest 17 liters/100 km, to 15.5 liters /100 km after change of valves, now it is 13.5 liters/100 km!

This is the consequence of the California Environmental Protection Act!

Even companies like Toyota have to lie to themselves and have to develop and manufacture a garbage secondary air injection system, and the process of producing this system does not damage the environment?

For reliability, Toyota is known for not dare to use new technologies. The internal combustion engine has been in development for more than 100 years. Toyota is not a newbie either. But for the first time to develop an engine with a displacement of 4.0 or more, a heavy price was paid by Toyota. However, after electrification, the threshold for developing cars has finally been lowered. This is the gospel for consumers.

Forgive my broken English, I just wanna share how to kill the SAIS. I know Google translate is odd, sorry.

How did you get the punctuation in the title and most of your post to be grammatically correct, then have everything fall apart by the end? It’s early, but something about these two threads has me salivating for some tinned meat favoured in Hawaii.

After reading the post twice, I think he was telling us that’s what he bought, but without providing a link.

Yes, the Hewitt kit should solve the problem if you’ve got a Gen 2. I did it to mine around 190k miles.

No problem, I can understand they are joking. I want to share my experience here. Toyota is my religious belief, and I hope they will get better. I want to keep my Tundra forever, this is my first truck, and the fuel consumption is amazing.

I did not paste the purchase link of bypass here because I don't want others to confuse my promotion here. When I ordered this set of bypass, I ran into a problem with Paypal, wasted a little time, paid three times repeatedly, and finally had to use a credit card to succeed. I don’t think you all will encounter such a problem. My paypal is registered in China.

Mine went out - the pumps didn't go, but the valves under the intake manifold in the back of the engine bay seized up. I remember it started with them both shut, so I just installed the unit that plugs inline with the MAF and that worked for a while until one of the valves then tripped open and stuck that way and I started getting the backpressure error...so then I had to install the blank-off plates. I remember that being a pain in the ass. But after getting those installed and using techstream to reset all the warnings, it was good to go for another 100k+ with no more issues.

Had heard its the valves that go out. Kind of considering doing it preventative. But hear some never going out and some well over 100k miles. Also kind of seems somewhat climate related; more failures in northern states maybe corrosion related. But maybe not. Mine will probably go out and I will be cussing myself. :censored: lol

Yeah, I went well past 100k, and it was before they offered the extended warranty (but I was also past that anyway). I figured screw it - I'm not out anything. We have a lot of rain and road spray, but not a lot of humidity and they don't salt the roads so none of that sort of corrosion. But who knows what a mix of hot exhaust gas and a little bit of moisture are going to do to an aluminum-bodied butterfly valve. I know the pumps were still working for me (I had seen others that had the pumps actually seize up). Really, the install wasn't that bad, but I was doing it alone in my gravel driveway and only had basic tools. The hardest part was getting the manifold and the air pump tube spread apart enough to drop the spacer into place to blank them off.

I'd probably not do it as preventative, unless you HAVE to have your truck every day. Even then, I feel like the shipping time was pretty quick and it was only a couple hours install (and should have been a lot less).

Re-reading I agree and see that rp wasn’t necessarily asking what to buy.

Even so, I disagree about the grammar comments, it could have been handled differently with clarifying questions as to what rp was trying to get across..

Another thread read like that if done before failure the manifold blocks are not necessary due to the valves fail safe position. I can't recall the details.

I don't think the OP sounds like a troll. He's right on about several things:
    - Yes, the greenies are inadvertently causing more harm in many instances (look at CA gas cans and their silly "Always Spill" nozzles)
    - Yes, CARB is the reason for many of our troubles
    - Yes, the air injection system on the Tundra is terrible and a huge point of failure

I have a 3rd gen and I'm certainly interested in a method to bypass the AIP.

By the way, the bypass installation is very easy, but the price is not cheap, and the product looks quite cheap. In any case, I wish them a prosperous business.

The principle of this bypass seems to be to rewrite the SAIP controller so that it keeps telling the ECU that I’m fine and I’m good. There may be masters who can directly modify the program without replacing the controller’s body.

This system, including the pipes leading from the exhaust pipes on both sides, two valves, two pipes leading to the pump body, two pumps, and then two pipes leading to the intake manifold. There are two controllers on the 2012 4.6 liters, and various mounting brackets on the engine. The R&D, manufacturing and assembly costs of this set should not be less than 2-3000 US dollars. To put it another way, all Toyota engine user with a displacement of 4.0 liters or more to donate a sum of money to plant trees in the desert,is it better?

Not to mention, the drastically reduced fuel consumption rate and low failure rate bring consumers pleasure

Dealing with this now, did a DIY bypass and now it appears to not be working, truck goes into limp mode multiple times over the past 2 days. Code P2440. Ordered the Gen2 bypass kit from Hewitt and it should be here tomorrow. I’m not gonna muck with it further, just ordered the real bypass. The gen2 kit emulates the whole system and lets the truck “run the pumps” when in reality it’s just the emulator telling the truck everything is fine. Was $400 plus $38 for overnight shipping but plug and play + installing the block off plates. I should be able to complete tomorrow after work in under 3 hours taking my time / involving beer

I've only done the SAIP bypass kits before getting codes, but I think if you're getting codes you may have valves stuck open and that requires more than the basic software trick that Hewitt, Rutech, slyfox75 kits do.

I wish you the best of luck. Anybody with Toyota V8's should get a bypass done ASAP.

I regret not knowing what happened to you. I guess as long as the electrical wiring is properly connected, it doesn't matter whether the valve is open or closed. So, maybe you need to change a bypass component.
    Good luck!

Mine fixed it 100%. Pull the codes you’re getting and call Hewitt. They will help you work through it and should be able to figure out your problem. Their customer service was excellent when I called to inquire about the kit in the first place. Let us know how it turns out for you. What codes are you still getting?
