you can strap just about anything you would keep in your bed. It’s just a matter of getting it up there and back down. Cooler, luggage, solar panels, fuel etc etc etc

IMG_5919.jpg ARE MX w/ rear door. It wasn't cheap, Suburban Toppers in Denver was a nightmare to work with and I would never recommend to anyone, but I'm happy I spent the money and didn't compromise on features. I've got an appointment to get some rhino tracks installed on it in a few weeks, and maybe build my own low profile 'prinsu' rack down the line out of 80/20.

I'm also finishing up a rear bed system and counter space also made from 80/20 with a fridge, sink, aux battery, etc. The bed platform converts from a couch with an aisle and the aisle will just have two boards that come up to complete the platform. Here's the sketchup model I started out with:

    My current work set up.

Added some welded wire to the window frames for added mounting options. Not for security.

Cost $12 in 1 hole straps.

So far just a surfboard, plan to put some camping stuff up top when I go in the summer. My 3 dogs ride in the back so I don't store much if anything in there.

At one point I had: recovery boards (Maxtrax knockoffs), Front Runner's dual jerry can rack with 20L fuel and 20L water, an ARB awning, some Rigid toolboxes bolted on for recovery gear and tools, and a shovel (aka toilet facilities).

    DJI_0489.jpg

I know I was under the official load rating for the shell, but a) I didn't place the heavy jerry cans well, b) the shell was old and starting to break when I bought it, and c) I've hit some bumpy trails, and all of that was a bit much. Anyhow, I sleep in the shell, and have a lot of photo gear, so I put stuff that is less valuable / less fragile up top.

The next iteration will be a high-rise shell, and no rack waaaaay up there. Thinking of a Prinsu over the cab, for much of the same stuff. Hopefully if I place the weight better - and it's bolted to metal instead of fiberglass - it will work out better. And firewood. I hate having that in the truck bed(room).

I'd love it if you kept us posted on that build - even start a build thread? I am going to do the same thing eventually. I'm just getting started with aluminum extrusion, and I'm starting small with some shelving in the access cab, but the platform bed system is definitely next. (PS, you probably know, but www.tnutz.com seems to be drastically cheaper, especially on fasteners.)

Absolutely, I have a build thread for the truck but will gladly update my progress in here also. My next hurdle will be getting electrical dialed in for the aux battery. I spent a solid day teaching myself aux battery systems via YouTube university and can proudly say I’m no longer intimidated by electrical.

Now it’s just a matter of ordering all the components, big stuff is the battery and dc-dc charger, then figuring out wire gauges, fuses/breakers etc.

Also wish I had known about that site before! I did opt for some cheaper fasteners via Amazon but I’m gonna bookmark that site for the future, thanks for sharing.

How do you like the windoors? I have an 18 crewmax and I'm looking at that exact cap, planning on putting on prinsu. Can't decide if I want the windoors. 800 dollars more. I'm short and I dunno if I would use them.

Where did you buy this? I'm in Sacramento. So far my local dealer quoted me about 4200 pretty much the exact same thing, minus the aero bars.

I also ended up nixing the areo bars since I knew I planned to get a prinsu.

I have windoors, and they are not worth a $800 upgrade. Look at different dealers. When I bought my cap last year, there was a huge difference between the different dealers I had got quotes from.

I probably need to rephrase what I said about the windoors. I really like my windoors; I use them for camping hunting tools etc. But if I had been quoted an extra $800; I would have passed.

Seems like I always come back around to wanting a cap on my truck. This thread isn't helping, so many great setups!
Does anyone have any insight into the softopper? Overall reviews seem to be pretty good and I like the portability and storage option.
My next question is does anyone here have one they feel like parting with? I'd love to pick up a used one in good shape.

I had a Softtopper for about a year before getting a hard shell. There were definitely things I loved about it but also a few I didn't. It was both good and bad for my dogs, great ventilation for them, but they could get out if they wanted - and they did. I had to replace a few snaps a couple times and Softtopper was great to send me free replacement parts but I wanted something more durable. It was great being able to fold it down if I needed to haul something.

Also you get no top storage since it doesn't support any weight. There are solutions like large overland style racks that fit over the top of them but then you're kinda defeating the main trait that they collapse easily for hauling large items.

That said it's $750 bucks, ships to your house in a week and you can install it yourself in under and hour, after that it's on and off in seconds. Take good care of it and it should last. I never had issues with rain or snow with it.

Probably what I miss most about it was it didn't make my truck look like an SUV. Especially since I have a white truck and my Softtopper was black.

Some photos before I got rid of it (sold to a member here)

Was anyone debating the Leer Cargo hooks before they got their cap? They offer 4 or 8. I'm thinking of adding them, simply for utility and fear of wanting them down the road but not having them. Wouldn't want to add them later.

Would love to see some pictures, hear some opinions on this.

    Thx!

My dad ordered them in a shell for his 2017 duramax and they aren’t even worth your time. They fall out and leave little holes in the ceiling. Not leaky though, so that’s good. But a waste of money as they were cheap and fall out easily.

Put roof rack rails on instead and then attach D-rings on the under side. 210FD87B-77E2-438C-9755-AAD7FE5A447A.jpgEA117262-4DA4-476D-9EFB-1DC6D864BF6C.jpg
