Hey guys, just bought my first Tundra a few months back. I got a 05 and it still has the factory audio and head unit. I was wanting to replace the factory head unit to a touch screen with Apple car play. Has anybody on here done that with success and which head unit did you go with? I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to car audio so any tips are welcomed and appreciated.

I'd like to install a sub and replace the factory speakers eventually but wanted to upgrade the head unit first.

Tons of people have does. Check out my build page (post #20) for pics of what head unit, sub and amp I used.

Sony XAV-AX100. CarPlay and android platform in one. Installation took me 8 hours but most of that was trying to find the reverse wire!!!! I hadn’t done stereo work in a decade but I figured it out and now have a modern unit with backup camera.

You picked a bad time to upgrade. Crutchfield is pretty much out of stock on all the affordable under $1000 head units except for the Boss and Jensen models. I had my eye on an Alpine ILX-W650 that's been out of stock for months. The only place I have seen it in stock is on Amazon for $450+ for a unit that is normally $299 MSRP.

Speaking of Crutchfield, my suggestion would be that if/when prices/stock get back to normal, if that's a word, I would consider using Crutchfield....radio choice, recommendation of parts needed by inputing Truck details. They will then fix you up with necessary speakers, amp bypass, making of cables etc. Install becomes much more easier.

I installed a Boss audio, super easy, I did lose steering wheel controls but I really don't find that to be all that inconvenient considering what you're gaining by adding touchscreen/appleplay (nav) the only thing that is unfortunate is that the license plate cameras go bad after 3-4 months probably getting wet going hunting etc. I did just order the master tailgater so the camera will be integrated into the tailgate latch and hopefully have increased longevity.

    Stock for now
i recently did this - i ordered from crutchfield and got new head unit and all new speakers - the hardest thing for me was the amp bypass wiring which was really just tedious - take your time and i think its a great and easy upgrade. cost in total about 250 for the head unit and 250 for all new speakers - takes a couple hours but def a huge upgrade from stock

Why not keep the factory amp? I recently purchased an Apple CarPlay head unit from Crutchfield with the pre-wired harness and the kit to keep the steering wheel controls and want to upgrade the door speakers and maybe add an under seat sub in the rear. I tried figuring out what to use in the front lower door speakers and got very confused on what would work. When upgrading the speakers should I bypass the factory amp?

I doubt he's going to answer you, dude hasn't been here in 2 years.

But why not keep the factory amp? Because trying to adapt it for use with an aftermarket stereo is a pain in the ass, plus it's dated 1-20 year old tech, and finally any quality modern head unit will likely have more, cleaner power in a smaller, more efficient package.

If you can't figure out how to wire your stuff up, Crutchfield has free phone support. But this topic has been fully laid out in this thread, under the "Audio and audio upgrades..." section: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

If you can't figure it out after reading and checking out pics in the linked threads inside that section of the 1st reply, create a new thread so we can help. 1 or two similar posts come through every month.

Do not cut any wires. They make kits and adaptors for all of that
