All depends on what you use it for. I camp, fish, mountain bike and occasionally get lumber, bark, landscape stuff. I don’t need a bigger payload. No matter what you’re looking at a price hike for the new Tundra. Makes sense to me.

Given that it's the same as the previous 13 years, it's hardly "backwards".

It wouldn't exactly be going backwards as there has been improvements in the last few years of the Tundra. Some people don't have the ability to continually wait for the next Tundra if they are need of one now. Lots of others, myself included, don't want to risk losing the V8 for the Toyota Ecoboost, and as amazing as this new truck will be, reliability initially might not be as high.

I bought a 21 because it's that old. The kinks are worked out. In terms of dependability, it's like having a Land Cruiser truck. Same reliable power plant that still keeps up 14 years later. It's my simple, tried and true, ancient dinosaur...with CarPlay, haha. That's exactly why I got it. I have the best chance of going 300k miles and never having to see my dealer again. I'll gladly pay a bit more at the pump to keep my truck off the lift at the dealer while they tell me they "couldn't recreate the problem".

I think some Toyota owners forget how good they have it. Yeah, you could take advantage of that great resale value and trade it in for a domestic half-ton with more bells and whistles, but you're likely (FAR more likely than if you had kept the Yota) to have to visit the dealer because something is acting buggy...or worse.

Same for “13 years” and making that purchase is the definition of going backwards. Frame and engineering is from 2006. Sure I get it, some want to keep that nostalgia of the past. Crap, I’d love to have loaded 2005 Tundra. Just so close to having an up to date vehicle. If you can just wait 3-5 months.

I'm glad I bought my truck at the end of 2019 rather than waiting for the 2021/2022/2023+...? I can't imagine trying to do everything I've done the last couple years without my truck.

If anything it's not moving, backwards doesn't really work in the analogy. But considering they have made improvements here and there, I think it's slightly forward?

And honestly, what's up to date that's not in the 2021? What can it not do that the 2021 F150 can?

But tbh, there's room for everyone even if we don't always agree. It's not a nostalgia thing for me as I'm coming from a 2014 F150 Ecoboost to my first ever Toyota. For me it's about QDR, it's about every year Consumer Reports complaining about the Tundra fuel economy and riding like a truck, yet its their only recommended buy for a full size truck.... Why? If you're a Toyota owner you already know why.

Again, there's room for everyone. If you want to go out and buy the first model year of an all new truck go for it. That's something I'm personally not comfortable with doing. And as I said previously, coming from my previous truck, I drive 90% city and was getting 13.5mpg. Even Tim from Pickup Truck. Com who bought the hybrid was getting about the same mpg as the guys with the 2.7 Ecoboost unless he was trying to hypermile it.

So as someone who can live in the restrictions of the somewhat limit payload capabilities, I'd gladly take something more prove and reliable and give up on the 'all new" until its been around for a while.

You forgot to mention the “trans cooler/warmer” that the average buyer would have no clue transmission temps are hitting over 230 towing 2000lbs. And no matter what people say, trans temp over 230 and some have posted 240’s - 250’s towing 5000 lbs will kill a transmission over a couple year period. Again I totally get wanting this so called bullet proof truck. Just Toyota has lost my vote on the current model. If they don’t make considerable updates for 2022 I will be looking at the GM straight six diesel half tons.

who wants to bet the reason for all this secrecy and hyperbole on the 2022 Tundra is because it's going to be a flop.

The new Ford Lightning, while being a ford so automatic downvote from me, is fast, gas free, will probably have no problem towing heavy loads for short distances, and gets a damn endorsement by Sleepy Joe.

Meanwhile this "world breaker" has less power "leaked reports" than a 5 year old Raptor.

I better shit my pants driving it for all this blue balling toyota does.

Edit.. I guess if you compare F150 to Tundra sales number the Tundra has always been a flop...

Just release it Toyota. We are all excited.

That’s a fair question— better the devil you know, I suppose? In all honesty I don’t care about fuel economy. I do care about range, I’d bet a beer the 38 gallon tank goes away with the new setup— resulting in a similar driving range.

Bottom line, I love the Gen 3 Tundra, and I’m confident I’ll love the Gen 4 as well but I need a truck now (ironic considering it was supposed to be delivered two weeks ago…) and I’ll rely on the early adopters to shakedown the Gen4 before I take the plunge.

I'm with you on the cooler–I think it was a step backward, taken at the time to increase profits on an insanely long 2nd generation truck with a planned end in a few years. Lots of people here disagree. That's fine. For the handful of failures Toyota will get within warranty, they'll still come out way ahead having saved ~$500/truck for 100k trucks/yr for three years (2019-2021).

For most owners it won't be an issue. Certainly not within the standard warranty's timeframe. I live in the South and use my truck for trips in all kinds of traffic, hilly terrain, off roading, infrequent towing of 5k lbs, and somewhat frequent hauling. I don't care about getting through the warranty; I care about getting to 300k miles. I don't see myself getting to 300k of the kind of miles I put on my truck with only that little hockey puck exchanging engine coolant heat with my trans fluid. I want mine to operate like your 2018, so I added the cooler. Cost me $750 in parts and a couple hours.

I still think I bought the best half ton out there. Spend some time at the GM forum, and read about the diesels. You'll want to go into it eyes wide open. GM was my 2nd choice, for what it's worth. But they're still ironing out the 2019+ generation, half ton diesels included.

Because Toyota flat out lied to its customers? Yes
Adding a $700+ trans cooler that has to be Installed at a Toyota dealer so it won’t break the warranty is adding profits to the dealers. This was a cookie thrown out to the Toyota dealership network to increase some profits. Because literally anyone that’s knows or understands these high trans temps will not tow without the cooler.

how do you know this for sure and what other colors might be available for the trd pro trim level?

I'd like to see a rendering of the truck with this color if anyone out there can do that. Thanks.

Probably not on this site, most seem well informed. I do have a coworker and her brother is a service rep at a Toyota dealer. Transmission failure is not uncommon with current model. Met him once and he personally would not own a newer model Tundra. 2022 Model should fix the transmission and other towing weaknesses. Very excited to see what Toyota has come up with over the past 13+ years of research.

I towed about 8-9k lbs from Florida to Maine. My tundra died on the side of the road. Just kidding, it hauled like a champ and never had issues other than trailer away from the shit trailer. I never added on a cooler.

According to your profile, you have a 2015. If it’s the 5.7, then you do have a cooler.

It appears to be a color option for the Pro, assuming there will be a few other options like there is now.
