A Ford eh! Tell that to my friend who’s brand new F150 sat at the dealer shop for over 4 months because it was burning oil like gas. Took a lawyer to get them to put a new long block in. He now stares at my Tundra with envy and frets when his will break again.

Same color they painted fire engines back in the 70s and 80s. Supposed to be better for safety.

I was all set to buy the GM 3.0 until my mechanic at work (we have a huge fleet of all brands) said several of the wet oil pump belts have had to be changed already (supposed to last at least 100k), he had to drop the transmission to get to the belt. Let me know it would be a very expensive repair if it failed early. I've been on all the 1/2 ton diesel forums and the 3.0 Powerstroke seems to be having the fewest problems (2019 and later models). The DEF systems on all the new 1/2 tons are literally ticking time bombs for expensive repairs.

I agree on waiting for things to sort themself out on the Gen 4 for a year or two.

But I for one am not enamored with the supposed 38 gallon tank on my Platinum that only takes 30 gallons and gives less than 500 miles of range.

Yeah, I’m hoping it goes away for a better system. Preferably something without a gas cap, that doesn’t need over 6 gallons in reserve to cool the fuel pump, and that truly gives over 500 mile range (or 300 miles towing).

The 38-gallon tank takes 38 gallons of gas.

True, but it’s not a useable 38 gallons. 30 gallons for range, then the rest is for fuel pump cooling. So it’s still effectively a sub 500 mile range / 30 gallon range tank.

Love your truck BTW, keep up the good work!

Incorrect. It is usable. Plenty of people have gone beyond the "distance to empty" number and put 35+ gallons in it. The computer is conservative and everyone keeps assuming that makes it unusable.:facepalm:Go read some of the MPG threads.

I’ve read them, along with the 38 gallon tank experience threads.

Toyota being Toyota, I don’t doubt their computer as conservative. But when my gas gauge needle is below “E”, and my DTE is at zero, and it barely takes 30 gallons it also makes me lend more credence to the massive reserve being used for fuel pump cooling. A 100+ mile reserve is ridiculous.

But who knows. The running past 0 DTE causing fuel pump issues may be akin to the 2019+ lack of transmission “coolers” causing transmission failures, and 10k mile oil changes grenading motors. Toyota engineers are smarter than I am, so I’ll just quit bitching and fill up when they say.

It's because of where the fuel pickup is. If you go to empty on the gauge and park nose down on a steep slope you won't pick up any fuel. It's Toyota safeguarding against idiots saying I have fuel in my tank but it won't pick it up, not realizing it's because of how they parked. If you have more than empty you will have fuel at the pickup on typical steep slopes.

So 21% of the fuel tank is to safeguard against idiots? What other auto manufacturer does this type of creative engineering?

I thought he was insinuating you don’t have one unless you add one, so yes, if it’s standard on 5.7, I have one.

Have you tried throwing a jerry can in the bed and driving until you run out of gas to see how far you can actually go?

    No sir.

While I am annoyed at the gas tank, I am not annoyed enough to run out of gas on purpose or intentionally run my fuel pump dry.

If it is because of some weird fuel pick up location design issue. It would be my luck I would run out of gas on some steep up / down hill where I’d need 8 gallons to hit the fuel pickup……. When I only packed a 5 gallon can.

How do you know the reserve is for fuel pump cooling and not to ensure you don't get stranded in the middle of Wyoming?

It was included in the tow package (which may have been standard on the 5.7, depending on where your truck was first sold) until 2019.

Except if you are towing, gonna be less than 100 miles of range left when the light comes on. More like 50.

even if you use 6 of the 8 gallons, that’s still only 80-120 miles of range.

I wouldn’t want it to wait to come on with only a gallon or two left..

Great point. It's nice knowing that there's this buffer in case. Had a few times in my work trucks where I thought I only needed the same fuel as the day before and I'm at 5/8ths of a tank so don't fuel up in the morning but then halfway through the day they send me further away so suddenly I'm paranoid about fuel. If it was in a Tundra I'd know I have that buffer to get back no problem.
