Just got back from Grease Monkey. 7.4qts of Mobil 1 0W-20. 7.4qts appears to be what my truck likes.

I think it's funny how they differ. Mine is 8.5 quarts every time I change it.

    Many to come.
I've an '09 and I just put 7.5 quarts in it and it was at the bottom mark on the dipstick. I put the other 1/2 quart in to make eight. I'll see where it is. More than likely, 8.5 is where I'll be. This is with a filter change, which btw is a pita! I was surprised at how easily the skid plate went back on though.

Guys you really don't have to WRENCH( tighten ) TO much on the Drain Plug & the Filter Holder just snug it up ?
I figure if it leaks I can always Cinch it up a little more.
I made it tight but some guys over tight every thing.... Its like holy crap.
CALM DOWN ... its not going anywhere..

2011 Tundra 5.7 Limited -- 8 qts puts it spot on the top dip stick mark after 3 minutes run time.

I've changed my oil filter every 5k miles for 100k miles now and the filter replace just gets old every time. (See photo) Oil up to your elbow... all over your tools.... really? The Tundra is as bad as any. The filter center drain plug was a good idea that wasn't tested and just doesn't work. (lol)

I design rockets for NASA for a living. Oil changes aren't rocket science. Automotive engineers, I'm calling you out...YOU CAN DO BETTER. (Lol)

Changing your oil should be as easy as changing a printer cartridge.

mine just took 8. I wonder if a hotter engine drains more thoroughly and thus takes more oil. mine was quite warm this last oil change and that stuff poured out crazy fast. made a huge mess.

Here's my two cents here on this oil capacity for the 5.7...or at least the 2011 Warrior that I bought three weeks ago. I changed oil and the filter...book says 7.9 qts of oil. Dropped in the 8 qts and ran the engine for a few minutes and waited an hour or so.The dipstick was right at the upper hole on the dipstick after the hour. ...Drove the truck for three days up and down the freeway and around town. While filling up the windshield wiper container shortly there after I thought I'd check the oil level. It was hitting the bottom hole on the dipstick....added 1.5 qt of oil, ran it for a few minutes checked it again. Brought the level up to the upper hole....been there ever since. But my oil change with filter and engine oil cooler was close to 9.5 qts.......I had to buy 2 more qts of oil. So,... why wouldn't the owners manual or the service department have this information?

    Not nearly enough room here!
I buy Amsoil Signature Series 5W30 in Gallon Jugs and dump two of 'em in my 2010 DC, with Toyota's TRD Filter.

From what I understand, Tundra oil capacity changed in 2010 (7.9 qt with filter and 7.5 without) and pretty much remained the same.

    2007, 2008, 2009 models take 7.5 quarts.

Sorry but I think you overdid it. There is a process how you’re supposed to check oil. If I remember correctly it’s something like let it warm up for five minutes and sit for three minutes then check oil. I don’t see how you can fit another 1.5 quarts.

Shit you not! My neighbor needed some help with his Honda Civic. He’s a young kid and he asked me to help him check the oil. He opened the filler and said look it’s not full.
I thought he was kidding but he wasn’t. He thought the engine should be full to the top with oil. Holy shit! I promptly schooled him.

    So here's another thought on the issue/question of 7.9, 8.0, 8.5..........
The 0W-20 oil is a SUPER lite oil. Obviously it's best for the bigger engine, but it's commonplace that after running a few days following an oil change that the level will drop slightly. Older/higher mileage engines may experience this more.
It can be consumption (friction/breakdown), seals, etc. Extreme weather conditions/fluctuations (when the engine's not running) all play an effect as well, albeit slight.

The best solution I know of....
6.9 qt (call it 7 even if you want): Mobil 1, 0W-20
    AND
1.0 qt - Lucas Oil, Full Synthetic Oil Stabilzer

Never used MotorKote. I think I've heard some folks talk about using that in big trucks...rigs, dumptrucks.
I've always used Lucas Oil. I know some ninjas in the sandbox that run Lucas Oil in their stuff. Good enough for them=good for me!

I use Lucas Upper Cylinder Treatment religiously. MotorKote is widely used in racing engines. The best true anti friction agent. You can pour it into the crankcase. Will not displace oil volume unlike bullshit Slick 50 snake oil.

I thought that all the replacement oil filters came with a little plastic tube that you push into the center. That's what I've always used it to do, not a random socket or adapter.
