Potentially snapped Timing Belt

At 65mph in the HOV lane going through LA, the last thing I wanted was a snapped timing belt. But that may have been what I got.

Heard a quick pop sound from the engine and no gas could be given after that. Luckily, I was able to coast off the hwy and get towed to a shop my friend recommended. I'm still waiting to hear back what exactly it was, but I'm expecting the worst.

If it is the timing belt, any idea what this will look like in terms of damage/repair? I know it can ruin the engine and a replacement may be the only answer. At this point, again, I'm expecting the worse and want to get ahead of planning for it. How much should a "new" engine cost plus labor?

IF the belt snapped at that speed your looking at severe valve damage and piston damage. Be looking into an new engine. Do you know when the belt was last replaced? If it was recently I’d be talking to the company that made the belt. Engine replacement at a shop will run 3-6k depending on mileage labor rate, location, etc.


A reman engine will be a fair bit more

 

Oof, yeah, that will suck. I am not sure when the belt was last replaced. There is no sticker on the engine like there usually would be. At 3-6k, is it worth it to fix in your guy's opinions?

 

Personally, I'd replace the engine with reman'd if you ever plan on selling this truck sometime in the future. Even if it's just a tiny fraction of uncertainty. I'd replace with a reman'd engine.

Sounds like you either need a used or rebuilt engine you can buy. How many miles did you add from ownership?

Wow, that really sucks. Sorry to hear. You could probably use the Toyota site to check if the first change of the timing belt was done at the dealer. Hard to believe the original owner would let it go that long.

 

You can pull back the timing cover and check the belt in around 90 seconds. You need to do that first before anyone can give advice.

 

Yeah, I'm still waiting to hear back from the shop I had to leave it at. It's all just guesses until then. Would sure be nice if it wasn't the timing belt.

 

I’ll cross my fingers for you. There’s been a few people I’ve read about that broke a timing belt without engine damage. I don’t understand how, LOL, but that’s what I’ve read. So I’m gonna hope for the best for you.

I’d rebuild the engine on my time, and go with a known-good jy engine in the meantime. But i could swap myself. And id change parts. I also wouldnt be scared of a 4.8/4l60 swap.

 

Depends on the condition of the truck overall. If it’s a clean one, you sure as hell won’t find a replacement for 6k. A new truck would be double that.

 

I’ve read a few times of others that the belt has snapped. One was even supercharged going 45-50mph. All were able to put a new belt on and no damage was done. I hope to hear good news when your mechanic calls, good luck!

 

Same here, so it is possible that you won’t have any damage if your belt snapped. Hopefully is not the belt and you’re able to get it back in shape!

 

The truck is in great condition otherwise and looks incredible. I bought it for $9k and a Toyota shop told me that was a steal for the condition it was in. I would much rather fix her up.

 

Timing belt totally broke. Sounds like the '05 Tundra 4.7 is a non-interference engine which means that I'm probably SOL. Does that sound right? Just want to prep myself.
The mechanic will know more about the condition of the engine tomorrow.

I’m pretty sure its an interference engine, but ive never been in there.

 

I think you have that backwards. Non-interference means it wouldn't hurt anything. I've always read these trucks have interference engines. Several people have reported the belt breaking and it not causing damage though. You won't know until the shop checks further. Do you trust the shop?

Your mechanic might be able to just rebuild the engine you have. All is not lost just because of some bent or broken rods, wasted valves, and pistons. Cylinder sleeves is a way to fix up the block damages.

 

Well the issue with bent valves is the damage to the head usually requiring new heads. Pistons suffer too. Bore should not unless a valve completely broke

I highly recommend a long block. I haven't had the pleasure of swapping one into a Tundra (yet) but definitely have on other vehicles and FGTs don't look to be very challenging.

Any records to indicate the age of the timing belt?

 

If it did bend valves, I’d be looking for a yunk yard motor. They can be had pretty cheap and you can freshen everything up before you stab it in.

 

Wish you the best of luck with this. I have seen a few people on here report losing their timing belt and getting away with no damage but I would prepare yourself.

 

I had a old Honda prelude that the timing belt let go at ~ 60mph, 6 bent valves and one damaged piston.

I would suspect OP would have a few bent valves at that speed. If it broke during idle then there would have been a better chance at no damage.
