Gooseneck Dump trailer towing a bad idea?

    Through my family I have access to the below pictured Gooseneck Dump trailer. I'm in the market for a Tundra. Do you think a 5.7 tow package Tundra can tow this trailer within it's rated capacity?

    Trailer contents will be construction debris, tree limbs, yard waste, mulch, and top soil. I don't plan to load this trailer full. It's large, 16 foot box length. It's an old grain trailer with hydraulic dump. It would be nice to have the option to use a Tundra with this trailer occasionally versus borrowing a 3/4 ton diesel from a family member everytime I want to use it. And I don't really want to purchase a 3/4 ton myself due to increased cost and overall size. I'm a current Tacoma owner and really enjoy it but I recently purchased an acreage and need some more truck capability. Thanks in advance.

    General rule: If it's a gooseneck or 5th wheel the pin weight is usually really close to the Tundra's payload ratings.
    That's a general rule because there are a few exceptions, but without actual ratings on a SPECIFIC truck and that trailer it's impossible to say with 100% certainty.

    You will run out of payload way before you get near the max towing capacity on just about every 1/2 ton truck. You need to find out what your payload rating is, and what that pin weight is.

    Dump trailers are really built strong and rightfully so. Unfortunately with building something so strong the weight is probably going to be to much for the truck you want to get.

    Here are two similar dump trailers. Look at the 16’ trailer weight.

    Between 4800-5300 lbs empty. If you follow pin weight recommendations (20-25% total trailer) you will be creeping up on your max capacity…empty.

    5300x25%=1325 lbs.

    Putting 5-9k lbs in this trailer is easy. Let’s go with 5k lbs.

    10300x25%=2575 lbs.

    My smaller (but more heavy duty) 24’ gooseneck is 23% pin weight. Empty I have 1050 lbs before loading anything. This is right at 10000 lbs and my pin weight is 2300 lbs.

    My 28’ is 4800 lbs empty (no hydraulics, no storage box, lighter construction) and has a little bit lighter pin weight due to not having options on the front of the trailer. I’m still 21% pin weight empty (1010 lbs).

    In closing, you would be hooking to a heavier trailer than I have….with a 1/2 ton.

    That is going to be very heavy. You can get a 3/4 or 1 ton gasser for the same price as a tundra. I made the switch to a 1 ton gasser back in April. Paid the same price as my Crewmax SR5 tundra

    I would bet a fully loaded trailer is way more than the Tundra can handle. Go with a 3/4 or 1 ton. I switched to an F-250, 3120 LB payload which is 2.5X the Tundra.

    Gooseneck = 3/4 ton, maybe I can find a regular cab for a good deal.

    I’m not sure your price point but GMC 3500 SLE (same as SR5) crew cab for $46k. Regular cabs in my area are going for $41k

    A little off topic but what keeps a gooseneck from swaying, and obviously you can’t use weight distribution…is the stability of the trailer and load caused simply by proper loading?

    The weight and pivot point is on the rear axle. This pretty much eliminates trailer sway.

    This might shock you a bit, but due to the natural trailer sway you get with a conventional hitch I would get very similar fuel economy towing this:

    20’ x 102” 3750 empty, 5500 lbs for the Crawler, so around 9250 lbs

    As when I tow this:

    28’ GN Lowboy, 4800 lbs + 5500 + 4400= 14700 lbs.

    Pull at .5 mph in 4lo, not tow at speed. Big difference.

    We are trying to help a person not make an expensive and dangerous mistake. I don’t fault him for due diligence and researching before a large purchase.

    I made a good choice with my Tundra until I tried to tow 8-9k through the Rockies. Then I had to deal with it for around 15 months to save enough money up for a bigger truck.

    These trucks are great at almost everything, except towing. If you're doing real deal towing, go get a diesel or gasser HD. Tundra just doesnt cut it, and even if it does, the gas mileage is horrendous.
