Hey guys a new member here. So I'm about to embark on a 700 mile trip. I have the nitto terra grappler 285/70/R17 116T tire. I wanted to get everyone's opinion on pressure. I called the manufacturer and they are recommending 28# on the front 30# on the rear. At the moment I don't have any chalk to do the chalk thing . These numbers seem low to me . What do you guys think

You’ll get better milage, but a rougher ride at higher pressure?

air em up to max, then take air out until they quiet down?

I've been running about 38 in my ridge grapplers and they are wearing well. I agree those numbers seem a little low.

Ive been running 40 in my terra grapplers. I tried 35 for a while and felt a small sway so bumped them up. Might feel a little more firm, but handles better bumping them up a bit.

Use this calculator to get you in the ballpark. Enter the stock tires size and pressures, then enter the size and type of tire you have on the truck. Then you can adjust a couple lbs from there and see what feels best.

I think I'll start at 35-38 psi. My tires are 5 years old. My concern is the summertime heat. Would rather use more gas with lower pressure then have a blow out. Tires say 44 max.

I have similar tires in a similar size on a similar truck. E rated 285/75/16 yokohama ats on an access cab. I have been running roughly 34 front and 38 rear for a long time.

If your tires are e rated they like a higher pressure than d or c rated, or even p rated. Good luck.

I run Nitto Terra Grappler G2 265/70-17. 36# front and 34# rear. Great ride and even tire wear. I have had these tires since October 2018 and have run about 27k miles on them.

D rated would be around 65 max
E rated would be 80 max

So you Likely have C, SL, or XL. I doubt you would see much benefit over 40
psi. unless heavily loaded and trying to reduce the wallow of softer sidewalls.
I have never enjoyed driving over 55 mph, with less than 32 psi in any tire I've tried on a Tundra. The sweet spot will be in there somewhere. Will depend on your specific tire/rating//age/condition and your fully loaded weight for the trip

FYI -- Higher psi reduces heat due to more air volume, and reduced friction. Not necessarily safer to air down.

Tires don't blow out from being inflated, they blow out from being underinflated. Underinflation creates more friction and heat which causes the tire to fail. But 28# is not underinflation. The door sticker in my 2000 AC recommends 26# for the factory front tires. The 44psi Max should be used when towing to achieve the maximum load carrying rating for the tire.

To be clear, I do not run 26# in mine. I run 35psi most times. Wear pattern has been great. I rarely have the need to air down, I occasionally air up to tow. 44psi then.

Really? The age of tires are showing small dry rot lines between tread and I thought with over inflation it would cause fail. Thanks for reply

My concern too. We tow a camper, and I run the Tymate Tire Pressure Monitoring System, cheap little Amazon device, let's me monitor heat and PSI, solar powered too.

Do those Tymate sensors throw off the balance of your tires?

To be honest, I'd never even worried about it. IMO, the weight is very nominal and shouldn't be an issue, but I'm not a tire expert, so folks are free to correct my assumption if they know better.

Max rating of any tire is what it can handle. E rated are 10 ply sidewall and can handle 80 PSI. If you run your E rated tires at 80 around town or in the dirt, you will have a bad ride and unnecessary tire wear. Determine your pressure for your use, comfort, wear and performance. All things equal, that's 36 pounds on the high end and 32 pounds on the low. Those numbers may change if you are towing, racing or off-roading.
