My 2016 had the infamous coolant bypass leak but overall had less issues that my Tundra has had. I wouldn't call either one unreliable though.

Yep only reason I'm going to the 22 is for added torque and hopefully very low 1st gear, reverse and lower axle ratios. Also like how they have removed the soft curves from the front end and cab. Should be a square box. Hopefully there is a tech delete option. Only tech I want is FM radio and cruise control. Unfortunately we probably wont be able to fart without a sensor going off.

Ugh, for real. The current gen Nissan Titan has that same ugly front end—the proportions just don't look right.

Maybe it doesn't need to be pageant-worthy, but if you're redesigning a truck, why would you not want to make it look good? I doubt the design choices serve any real specific purpose—it's not like trucks are aerodynamic marvels. The "utility" is going to be in the frame and suspension design, so it would serve to benefit Toyota to make a good-looking truck...

Looks like someone accidentally dropped a d7 bucket down on the front hood area. I really dont care about how it looks as long as it will drag around a powerboost.

Another issue with price escalations on pick-up trucks is that people become far more hesitant to use the truck as a truck, lest it get scratched, dented or dirty. You pay $65K for a truck, you really trust the guy at the topsoil place to dump a load of gravel in your bed?
Or, you spend $10K for trendy off-road toys on top of an already $65K TRD-Pro, and the trail narrows and you need to choose if you are going to scratch your expensive new rig and make it to a remote campground, or go back to the municipal campground and be crammed in with a bunch of people who stay up talking loud all night?

I bought my current truck as a lease return for 50% off of MSRP, the MSRP was $45K (which I thought to be ridiculous) but gas prices were $5/gallon at that time.
I crashed my boat into the tailgate, big dent in tailgate. I push down small trees on backwoods trails with it, I park in tight parking spots and it may have been dinged. I don't care who parks next to it. I take it to the dump, and I haul rocks in the bed. I never sweat any of that because the truck takes it and I paid a relatively good price for it.
I can guarantee, if I get a new $55K truck, I will not be so careless with it, and that gives me pause, part of what makes my current truck so nice is I don't covet it. Never worry about where it is parked. Won't care if it gets scratched, and that is a type of freedom I like.

Let me rephrase, the new design (or at least the limited trim, which always seems to be a hideous chrome upcharged model) is ugly per my Wife. Her observation is that this new Tundra looks more like a Ford, not a Toyota.

Totally agree. When I had my brand-new 2018 Limited, I was always worried about scratching it, or the kids spilling something in it, or was extra-careful to load anything in it. After my cam tower fiasco resulting in a buy-back, I got a used 2010 with 104k on the odometer. It drives just as well as my 2018 did (and the seats are actually more comfortable), but I'm not scared to ding it up or "use it as a truck". That doesn't mean I abuse it, but it's just not a consuming worry anymore if anything happens to it.

Toyota has always followed Ford for some styling queues. This is no different, except the side view looks more Sierra. Why break what works.

I was the one who posted the pics. I found them on, of all places, a boat forum site. In the section for trucks and trailers, there was a thread on the Tundra. I currently have a Tacoma and recently got a boat. It can tow it...but it's the stopping, safety, payload that I am conscious of. I have been contemplating swapping for a Tundra for a bit, but wanted to wait on the 2022 to see the specs. As someone mentioned previously, the the looks are one thing, but it's capable of doing what I'd like..then I would seriously consider it.

I kinda with you but just because it’s used doesn’t mean it needs to look like shit. I have had my share of used vehicles and new. I treat them all the same. I agree that some people buy trucks just because and treat them like a lambo. I have a 2020 and I take it off-road but I ain’t going to dent it up or scratch it just for the sake of going off-road. Just like I will not wash it for a month but doesn’t mean I won’t give it a detail when needed. I personally don’t like to drive around in a beat up truck just because it’s a truck. If it were a second truck just for trashing it then ok but not my DD.

had a trd 4x4 off road 2017 for a while. Driver seat was like sitting on a sled or something. Will be great again once they give it lower gears and increase the seat and cabin height in 2024. I liked everything else about it.

well what also worked was that the 4 runner and Tacoma look great and they arent Ford rip offs. I don't think our 2014 refresh has any Ford styling cues either? But the 2008-2013 was always kinda fugly to me.

    But I see your point.

I think the 2022 looks great. Can't wait to see it in person.

Like every car forums I go to every new gen looks ugly until a few years pass or the another generation follows. Everyone has different levels of attachment.

I will say the last chevy redesign looked awful at first. It looks ok now in some trims, but I still hate their tailgate with the Chevrolet embossed so high on it.
Funny thing is the new redesign for chevy moved the belt line even higher so now it looks even worse than the current one. They made the headlights like an inch tall :puke:

Being one of the elderly members her at 63 I had many trips back in my day. CJ5 in high school in Missouri that I beat the pis out of, International Scouts with C channel steel with a section of telephone pole bolted to it for front bumpers and many various and sundry trucks for pounding through gulches, trees, creeks and washes in Colorado, Arizona, Oklahoma and Utah. Rolled them on their sides, tipped them back up, waited a few hours for the fluids to redistribute back into place, started them up and kept on rolling. Then bought my first Tundra DC base model (2014) in 2015 and not the same use but still didn't baby it. 2018 bought a '19 TRD PRO and beat it up some but not nearly as much. Now with my '21 I am saying to myself I will use it off road, but no brush busting, creek crossings or boulder traversing. If I had one of my old beasts wouldn't hesitate but as is pointed out many of these trucks at these prices create a practical hesitantcy for beating them up. For that reason many of these trucks are for all show and no go and are automotive testosterone driven bling. Not saying this applies to everyone, you all know who you are and if the pretty truck shoe fits then wear it. I will not be scraping and scratching my ceramic coated jewel at this point and have relegated myself to more fashion than function. Either way enjoy!!

I'm probably just going to beat it up. It's gonna end up as a soup can for someone half-way around the globe one day anyway. With as long as I keep my truck, there won't be too much of a loss in value.
My current truck is 15 years old, aside from all of the dings, dents and scratches I put on it, it cleans up pretty well. And it only has 85K, which is 1/2 the mileage I am seeing online for the same used trucks. I am going to guess a prospective buyer would prefer the lower mileage when it's time for me to part with my truck, so I'll probably get decent money for it anyways.

Been following this thread for a bit, and finally decided to chime in. Currently driving around an '06 4Runner SR5 with 215k miles, and I am planning to upgrade to the 22 Tundra.

I have been anticipating seeing one of these live for a long time (ever since the first spy leak of the headlight assembly). I, personally, am a fan of the new design (except for the rear bumper, that was a miss), and plan on having one in the driveway by year's end hopefully.

Just curious, what do you find more appealing about the '22 than the current gen? Is it looks, anticipated TTV6, just having the "newest" version or something else?

Honestly, the update in technology more so than the exterior overhaul. Been looking at Tundra's for years, and they were always behind the curve from the big 3 when it comes to that. Wife is driving around a '18 Dodge Citadel, and the technology her car is light years beyond what was offered in the 2021 models of the Tundra.

The interior of the Tundra has needed updating for a long time now.

I think "technology" has developed into a very subjective term. Technology that lasts is another dynamic. Most domestics electronics don't go much past 100k without developing many issues. So if you don't mind driving a truck/car much past that than the domestics are fine but you pay the price for that luxury. The longevity is not apples to apples in my book and will take the long term reliability over fanciness any day.

I understand. If I were in the market for a new 1/2 ton, there are a lot of features offered, in all the competitors, that are really compelling. For me the most compelling would be the onboard generator in the F150 Powerboost. Right behind that would be the heads-up display and rearview mirror camera in the GMC.

Ultimately, I would still go with the current gen Tundra unless Toyota throws a Hail Mary and drops a Hybrid Diesel in the next gen. They won't do that. But the current gen is so easy to modify and the "usable tech" for me has to do do with mods that I've made.

For a high mileage engine, it was in pretty good condition. Especially when you consider that it was poorly maintained and that lead to the early demise of 3-UR.

Definitely. I am thinking the vehicle it was in was stolen, crashed badly causing it to loose coolant (hence the burned plastic liners, that wouldn't happen if they were in liquid) and kept on driving until engine stopped running.

Very True, and there are issues with newer "Technology" with every brand. The reliability I have had with my 4Runner is the main reason I am sticking with Toyota for the Tundra. Personally, I am looking forward to the new model. I am leaning towards a 2022, but if push comes to shove, I have no qualms driving off in a current Gen.

My wife saw a GMT-900 Silverado crew cab and thought it was her dad's 2011 F150 Supercab so I don't ask her about truck stuff. (The truck she saw also did not have a canopy while her dad's does.)

The cabin is already too high and the seat goes up and down with the switch on the side.
