TRD Skid Plate Question

Does the TRD skid plate effect putting a larger tire on the stock wheel?

 

I am addressing the "looking nice" part. Is your truck raised? You can't see mine unless you lay on the floor.

I got it for winter. Had some deep snow and ripped the bottom off my Ridgeline.

I had this battle a couple of months ago. I'd still be waiting on the RCI if I'd purchased it instead of a used TRD. The difference is negligible and you can't see mine with out laying on the ground. All of this for a "trap door" for the oil filter...

 

The engine skid plate is 3 pieces. Front, mid and rear. The rear portion is a small piece that attaches to the front cat plate. The point of this piece is so that the rear-engine skid and front cat plate bolts are easy to reach. The mid engine skid is then installed with easy access. The attachment in my post has a much more detailed description and pictures.

I didn't open the attachment in that other thread, I was just looking at the pic on the post and the pics on his website.

For those asking about the appearance part, my truck is currently 2.5" in front, but I will soon be installing an aftermarket bumper and you will definitely be able to see the skid plate at that point. Not that it matters all that much either way, but the big red TRD down there would look kinda cool vs a plain old plate. The Valhalla Shield cutout will look great as well.

 

I am debating between rough country or Valhalla. Question on the valhalla can you run it on a 6” lift? The rough country says it’s good on 1-2.5” and 4” on up.

 

I have a stock skid plate from a 2018 Tundra 1794 I am interested in selling. Any interest?

 

I was going to say. I have the stock TRD plate. And I too would go after market. RCI, cali raised use to have one and a few others!

My truck is TRD off-road Limited and it came with the OEM black non-TRD skid plate and it doesn't have the oil filter access door.

besides the access door, is the OEM TRD skid plate bigger than the non-trd black skid plate? I mean does the trd plate cover or protect more area under the engine?

 

Its worth checking FB marketplace. I have seen a couple over the past few months in pretty good shape for 150-200$. One in Atl thats still posted if anyone is looking and is close.

 

It's considerably larger, wider, thicker and stronger

 

One weighs 3 lbs the other weighs 30 lbs.

You’ve probably already got the picture, but yeah, the little black, stamped piece of tin is not really a skidplate at all, but more like a splash guard.

Question from a Tundra noob, what makes the RCI so much better? I've read about some having issues with noise which can be alleviated with some rubber gasket material. Other than that, I don't see a huge difference?

 

RCI is quality built. Family owned business local to me. You have a choice of Aluminum or steel. Not cheap but cheaper than the TRD skid. I never had noise issues. That "TRD" logo adds a $100+ .

 

Great parts and service. Cheaper than the TRD plates.
I have had RCIs on 2 different trucks now and zero noise issue that many complain about with the TRD plate.
I am not a fan of aluminum skid plates. Lots of rock bashing here and my off-roading is not about speed so I am not concerned with the minimal weight savings either.

 

Ditto on the reported TRD skid noise...

 

I'm obviously a fan of RCI. CBI also makes decent skids and if you want to go nutz....Bud Built makes some serious heavy duty ass skids that will hit your payload capacity big time. $$$

Not sure this is particularly helpful to the OP, but I ended up with the TRD skid plate and have had no issues at all:

1. Install was easy enough; buddy and I handled it in the driveway in an hour
2. No noise - I haven't had a single noise issue on my otherwise stock 2021 CM Trail Edition 4x4
3. Easy oil change access - just did my first oil change and that access door is nice
4. I love the look walking up to the truck now that I've painted my two hooks to match. The pop of red from the TRD and the hooks is just what the white/black truck needed.

For most users (myself included), I can't imagine there being a significant difference in quality and utility between the RCI (in aluminum) and TRD plates. I tend to value factory parts when I can get them while others lean towards the aftermarket. To each their own.

I realize this photo is from a low angle, but I can still clearly see the plate, TRD logo, and tow hooks when walking towards the truck in the parking lot.

I bought this one. It's the Alum TRD plate, just missing the TRD letters. It has the recessed area for the letters so I might 3D print some TRD letters to pop into place. I have the Valhalla cat shields too.
