I am very impressed by the Rivian R1T. It's super compelling, looks way better engineered than F150.

However, with the new Tundra being so nice, we'll be using it for long road trips, and I suspect the mpgs will be good enough. I do 12+ hour drives while the wife and kid relax, just stop for breaks, gas and food. Only takes 5 min to put 400miles range back into an ICE vehicle.

I don't want to deal with finicky Charge America charging stations, long wait time for full charge, and almost none of the charging stations are setup as pull through for towing, which is a huge deal for us.

When charging stations are setup for towing trucks and they get a reputation for always being operational, maybe I will consider an EV truck next time.

I keep hearing a lot of comments that are basically saying "Toyota doesn't get truck owners", but the 1/2 ton pickup market has the most diverse set of customers of any other segment. You have everything from the old farts who would rather have a model T style crank on the front to start it because it's "more reliable", to young farts who want all of the tech and fancy rock crawling suspension pieces and let's not forget that "soccer moms" are a growing part of the truck buying population. So trying to appeal to everyone is nearly impossible. The best they can do is try to read the market and figure out where they can maximize their profits... Nothing wrong with that. They are in it to make money after all.

I myself don't fit neatly into any of those categories, but I tend more towards the young fart crowd even though I am approaching my mid-forties. I for one will be putting my order in for a trd pro as soon as ordering is available, but I will refuse to pay a penny above MSRP.

ya we also talk long road trips to more remote spots so that kinda stuff isn't going to work for long while until they get way down the road on charging infrastructure and time to charge

I agree with you, my bet (hope?) is they will position the battery in the area between the frame/under the bed, upgrade the battery to lithium with the the output to support more than a 400w plug. This type of change could be done with a refresh. I’m sure they’ll sell it as currently presented for a few years. It’s an easy win/improvement for Toyota and way to generate some truck turnover.

Haha. We all said we didn’t care about that stuff because we didn’t have it. Now that it’s available I’m sure the majority will want it.

We all know how popular overlanding is getting. Every overlander and their moms are going to want this truck. In a couple of years when the reliability is proven and the aftermarket stuff catches up, this truck will be a game changer to off-roaders.

That’s why they have trim lvl, but Toyota didn’t utilize that and still think everyone want a truck that could do everything.

I found it odd the TFL guy said toyota said the 1794 and Pro are the top trims and the platinum is under those.

well see about that when the pricing comes out I guess

Not using lithium when it’s been in the Prius for several years now (4+? I forget) with far superior energy density and service life, and putting the entire battery pack in the passenger compartment reeks of hodge-podge design without properly thinking it through.

I like the new interiors on the 22', not quite sure about the BIG 14 inch infotainment screen though. Not really liking the exterior design. Probably needs to grow on me.

Care to elaborate? If you are talking purely the external looks, then I mostly agree with you. Everything above the SR5 and below the trd pro has too much chrome in my opinion, but from the limited amount of information I have seen, it seems like they are optioned well at each trim level. I think one thing that Toyota could do to that wouldn't cost that much and would be a huge win is to offer different appearance packages on the lower trims... Blacked out or color matched in addition to the standard chrome.

I thought that was about putting space between the grille and the engine compartment/radiator so that it will collapse easier if you hit a pedestrian... That's why the new tundra looks so elongated in the front. Not sure how a huge grille would help with that.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST TIRE SIZE I CAN FIT WITHOUT CUTTING?

I get the same vibe! How funny if this is accurate? Like they had the ‘22 in the bag for over a year and then Ford comes along with power boost “Oh man, we better offer a hybrid!”

some toyota guy said 30mpg on the hybrid engine. To be confirmed by official sources but if that's the case that is a pretty good range.

I keep reading it has an electronic locking rear diff. In the TFL video he mentions it and says he will discuss it in a "moment" and never talks about it. I have not seen a button for the locker. No one has demonstrated it nor specifically pointed it out. Have I missed it? Is it the same old electronic anti lock brake system?

    Regards, Steve

One of the videos mentioned it has to do with supplier issues. NiMH are much more readily available than Lithium batteries. May be something to watch out for with future models - do they change battery packs once supply issues are gone

i agree, my 2013 handles like a loaf, and rides like crap. The brakes are meh, it chugs gas, the “leather” is laughable and the seats are not great, but yes it has been reliable and I like it.
If I had money to spend on a new truck, it sure as hell would not be on a second gen.
