Hey all, I’m pretty interested in building my own custom bumper. I have all the plate for it, a welder, and a plasma cutter. I was wondering if anyone had one that could either give me dimensions of their bumper or a CAD file or something. I just want to manufacture it myself and don’t have dimensions to build it

I recommend a weld it yourself kit. the amount of time to cut plate alone is worth it. Not to mention, fitment.

I’m fine with time requirements and all that. I have a torch mate plasma cutter and I know CAD and all that. It would be relatively easy to cut plate

I stand by my suggestion. I would not want to cut and drill this within reasonable tolerances. I am fabbing my rear from scratch, but way less cuts and no bends.

Can't really go wrong with a tube bumper.... or a pipe bumper.

Haha, looking good with the pipe. I don’t think it requires too much bending? I was thinking of modeling it something like coastal offroad’s bumper. Just plate steel welded together, no bends

That's a coastal. The big bend main section is in cardboard on the ground. that could be flat plates welded I guess, for more of a Transformers look.

There was a pic i took of a first gen front bumper made of pressure treated wood years ago. It was actually done well to match the curvature of the front but it was still a wood bumper.

Yep, just wondering if anyone has advice on how to do it or dimensions of a bumper that maybe not too much bending is required. I’m planning on just mocking it up with cardboard and getting the fitment right with that, then just plasma cutting all the pieces out and probably using SMAW to weld them. Or MIG whatever is easiest

If you are set on scratch, absolutely cardboard markup. Google images or look here for examples. I did a search and didn't find a CAD that would work. Maybe you could find one, but I doubt anyone here has it.
Getting you dimensions is a tall order, other than perhaps overall, not cuts. And then there is purpose - pre-runner vs. winch, etc are design factors.

Yep I couldn’t find any CAD either. Just figured if someone made it from scratch and has the CAD, here would be the place to find them. Mainly looking for like the dimensions of the few biggest pieces, that would be super helpful. Any type of help honestly is appreciated

If you don’t want to bend mock it up in 1/4” luan instead of cardboard. Too easy to bend cardboard even though you don’t want to.

Lexan? If so, that’s a great idea. Thanks for the input

edit: didn’t know what luan was and just looked it up, but I think making it with Medan would be a really good idea

Luan is kinda like plywood — thin, 1/4” and used to be cheap — think drawer bottoms and back of wood dresser type uses

anyway, works, glues and fastens as wood

I’m sure “medan” above is spell check butchering something

Once upon a time rear bumpers were an "option" on Chevy C/K pickups. People used to take railroad ties and secure them to the rear frame to meet inspection requirements around here.

If Coastal has a DIY kit, I’d go that route. I’ve fab’d a lot of things, and having a kit was nice.

I used a DIY kit from CBI on my 1st gen 4Runner and it was nice to not start from scratch.

Still not done, but I have lots of projects in the fire right now.

Looks awesome! I've been looking a lot at the coastal kit and the MOVE kit. Both are DIY weld-together options that look pretty cool.
