About as off-topic as it gets. Didn't know what one was until I was in the 10th grade, and only then because my sister went to Germany with the German club and one of her roommates crapped in the bidet thinking it was a toilet.
We're working on new house plans and don't know if I should consider one or not. I went through shoulder surgery on my dominant side a couple of years ago and asked a good friend who had done the same how he coped with the obvious without the use of his dominant hand? He said go get a bidet, best thing I ever did.
We vacationed in Italy once and it was standard issue there, oddly a wash cloth was not! Are we behind the rest of the world or smart to not embrace them? I've never tried one, what are your thoughts?
Wise cracks expected but I'd appreciate some experienced opinions too.

We have an add on Bidet that bolts under the the toilet seat. I always thought it was just a fad or cool thing foreigners had, well after using it, I can say I will never go without it. Its a night and day difference as far as feeling clean. When I'm out and about and unfortunately have to go #2, I cant wait to get home and give it a blast.

I thought it was a huge fad - UNTIL last February, and I bought one....and discovered that it literally saved us about 50% monthly cost for toilet paper. I love it.

I believe if money is no option the Toto one's are top shelf. If you get a cheaper one at least make sure it has the capability to heat the water a bit.

I was ignorant until I worked in Korea Hyundai shipyards for awhile and was converted. I still don't have one, I'm missing an electrical outlet close by the toilet.........

I bought an add-on one for my wife when she needed rotator cuff surgery on her dominant arm. That was better than doing all laundry, cooking, and dishes for a year! She STILL talks about how much her husband loves her because I got that for her!

Frankly, I have not tried it myself. I might have to after reading some of the comments here, though.

Toto's are the only toilet (or bidet) I will ever buy. Yes, they cost more than the others, but they just WORK! They cost less than most of the mods we discuss on this site, but last a LOT longer!

Let me make it truck relevant for you then, lol. Would you use a pressure washer or hose to wash that mud off of your Tundra or a dry towel?

Also, agreed on the recommendation to go with Toto and make sure it has a heated function for the water and, if you can, for the seat too!

Best analogy I’ve heard around this conversation: If you’re trying to clean peanut butter out of carpet, are you going to spray it with some water or only use dry paper towels?

Check the build link in my signature.
Dunno that I’d plan a dedicated one into my bathroom planning, but we’ve got The add-on ones on all of our toilets at home. Like others, I was skeptical at first, eye uses them religiously and I do must the time (though I find I still use as much paper trying to dry things off). There’s a lot more real estate to get wet when you’ve got 45-yr-old saggy balls getting splashed.

I’d look at a quality bolt-on option OR a toilet that has it built in.

Another consideration in the planning is whether to add a hot water tap at the toilet so you can do a warm water one.

This thread is cracking me up! I will say if you get the chance to experience Japanese toilet technology in Asia it’s pretty amazing. The first time the toilet seat opens and the bowl light turns on as you approach the toilet can be a bit surprising but you come to appreciate it.

I agree with your post, however having instant warm water would be sort of challenging. Can it be done, yes, but I don't know if the benefit would outweigh the cost of material, installation, maintenance, and energy just to get a quick undercarriage rinse. Maybe OP could just have a small inline wall mounted tank to supply mostly room temp. water. Just a thought!

Something I heard on the Joe Rogan podcast, and he advocates for a bidet. If you happened to wipe your @$$ and got $#!& on your finger, would you just use dry paper to clean it off, or would you go to a sink and use soap and WATER?

I have two add on bidets in my house. The master and the guest bath. Got them at the start of COVID due to the possibility of TP supplies dwindling. Typically, when I travel I always carry flushable wipes as I like my southern region to be clean...I've lived in the mud. Done with it. With a bidet, you just use some TP and dry your @$$ off. As clean as could be without a shower.

Heated water would be nice, but the pressure coming out is instant like a hose, so I don't think it would work unless you had a tank that's constant heated. Honestly, I don't even notice it, granted, I'm in So Cal.

I have a Toto bidet toilet seat. It fits on a standard size elongated toilet. Some of them are a different shape and only fit on a toilet specific to the seat. It does not require a separate bidet fixture. It does require an electric receptacle near the toilet to plug it in. We like it so much that I recently bought a second one for the master bath that I am installing.

Thanks, sounds like an overwhelming approval from those of you with experience. May have to get a bolt on to try out before we build. Think I'll hold off on the lights for now!

I have two of the cheap bolt on ones and work really good. One of them has connection for hot water so no need to electrical. I hate doing my business outside the home now. If you touched shit, would you just wipe your hand off with paper towel?

I was watching a movie where two goons were chatting about how their buddy has baby wipes by his toilet. One goon was saying how sissy that is. The other goon said something like "if I wiped some shit on your arm, would you rather wipe it with toilet paper or with a baby wipe?"

    Changed my view on wipes.

I can't bring myself to try a bidet. Too much can and will go wrong for me.

Toto makes great stuff, I agree with that as well.

I liked the ones that play music too, or immigrate the sounds of birds and waterfalls.

What I didn't like was this one. Even with the instructions I had a hard time figuring out what do I do with my shorts? I had to carefully pull them off and set them on the shelf. That helped so I could concentrate 9n keeping my balance.

This is the one I got. bolts onto your current seat, hot water comes from under your sink. As soon as I sit I turn on the water with the back switch set to nozzle cleaning. This lets it warm up before you need it. When your done muddin, adjust your temp, flip the back switch and fire away. Seriously cut down on paper usage, and so much cleaner feeling. Now need to find a way to hook one onto a hitch mounted toilet seat for wheelin.

That one looks way nicer than the squat toilet I had to use in Asia!
