just my .02 but that would just suck one a mile long to have a brand new truck all taken apart and put back together by the average dealer tech, rattles and squeaks and other stuff is bound to happen

what a bummer, sorry for those who are getting screwed.

Was just chatting yesterday with my mechanic who’s the most senior technician at one of my local Toyota dealers. He has worked at the same dealer for somewhere around 30 years. He says that Toyota quality has been on the decline in the last few years. He says he thinks it’s due to them getting parts from too many different suppliers. They used to have a designated supplier for certain parts and they told them exactly the specs they wanted met on the parts and there was no compromise. He’s seeing things fail that were never typical Toyota issues like transmissions. Hopefully we don’t see the reliability drop off too much, it has me feeling more skeptical about my wife’s 2019 Rav4.

I can see why they remove the cab to do turbos. I work on fleet vehicles and have access to Toyota TiS system for the repair manual for warranty repairs. If following the repair manual word by word. First step is to remove the engine from vehicle and put it on a engine stand to replace turbo. Probably easier and quicker to just to disconnect and lift the cab off. Working flat rate. Time is money.

TakiEvo, is that repair manual where you get those diagrams available on the internet, or is it a paid/subscription? Do you mind sharing where you get those useful pics? Thanks!

Access through my job. It’s subscription base I’m pretty sure if you want to get it for personal use. Kinda expensive.

Omega Auto Group has most brands and only sell new. Their pricing is wicked good, no haggle, just pay them flat fee. And they do financing. Car delivered to your door.

Just realized 2 from Vegas in this thread. Not to hijack but nice to know. Never heard of Omega Auto Group but will look into it. Don't know how long the dealers here will play with this ADM insanity knowing that there are 4 different ones that i know of unless they get together and collude.

It's interesting how some owners who run into this are having their entire turbo assemblies replaced while others are able to have the code cleared and go on down the road.

One person on FB posted their service report from the dealership. They had the wastegate CEL come on, dealership cleared the codes, and then put 85 miles on the truck trying to replicate the CEL. They couldn't and the truck was returned to the owner. Fingers cross it doesn't return for them, but if it happens once...I'm sure it'll happen again. I don't like it when something bad happens to a vehicle, I take it in for service, and the mechanic says, "Well...we can't replicate it so just keep driving it until it happens again. Then bring it back in." Because 9/10 times it'll definitely happen again.

I guess the part has some really inconsistent behavior. Crazy.

hell ya, and then you feel like your driving around with a ticking time bomb. that isn't a small potential issue.

seems like the playing field is leveled with the 6.2 lifter fiasco at the moment for my tundra platinum vs AT4 shopping this spring or summer

that would be great if both are fixed by then, I have more faith in toyota though

It’s an issue. But as Ox said, we don’t know how wide scale. If you do have an issue you’ll be waiting possibly months to get fixed.

Not only the wastegate there’s a lot of brake and sensor issues. But at least the new ones have QC fix on the window trims.

I’ve seen some as low as 16 miles before the CEL. It’s low that you’ll have an issue but if you do you’ll prob be waiting a while. There’s 3-4 folks already in buyback and lemon law just because of the wait time. Which is understood. With being a 1 car family I’d have to do same. Or make Toyota make my payments while it’s out.

I'm one of the unlucky ones. I think the observations about build dates and only a few people affected are true from what I've gathered on FB. The service report mentioned above checks out for my situation. CEL at 500 miles, brought it in, they cleared it, did a 15 mile inspection ride, and just told me come back if it returns. One thing to note is that they had to get confirmation from Toyota that the code was a stuck closed wastegate because they claimed it was an unfamiliar or new code. On the way home it came on again, so I guess I'm lucky in that aspect. Now the truck's been at the dealership for a week and a half and the only update I have is the turbo is on backorder.

I'm not sure what my options are, but if it's going to take months that's really going to suck. I thought about getting my refund for the within 30 day grace period, but I fear I'll have no vehicle if I do that. With the scarcity of the tundras already I doubt they could easily replace it or put me in a new one. And I don't think the lemon law would hold since technically there is a fix on the way and the wording is something like it has to have had "reasonable attempts to fix a problem".

Exactly how mine evolved. Several times over as many days. Irony is; TX facility is receiving real-time feeds from you vehicle when it’s operating. They could see all of this unfolding and the dealership’s service manager would know more about it than me when I pulled in each time as it’s being fed to them simultaneously.

Rumor on the street is there was a bad batch of turbo assemblies from the supplier.

I'll bet there will be a TSB soon to follow.

I was being quoted parts ETA of late Feb/early March. Took delivery of the vehicle in mid December. It was throwing codes immediately l. As I’ve posted prior…2 weeks on the phone with TX case manager and no resolution. Findlay Toyota took the matter in hand, bought the SR5 back and allocated an inbound TRD Pro to me for replacement. Dealership is eating it. Toyota corporate has refused to contribute to the solution.

Look at your State’s Lemon Laws. There’s always an associates time frame with the frequency of attempts. It may get Toyota’s attention. Having to “salvage” a VIN # is never in their best interest. Leverage for you, maybe

That sounds like an exceptional dealership. So no lemon law procedure nonsense, just regular ole customer assistance to get that sorted out amongst yourselves? Another worry I have is they have no date on the part, so they may try to make me wait. I'll try talking to them again today and see what's new. I love the truck... I just want to be able to drive it again!

Good luck with Toyota Financial, it that’s who you employed for financing. They were uncooperative in every regard. My contention was I’d not received the reciprocal consideration (the truck) required to establish a contractual agreement.

You should have been assigned a case manager and team. In reality they’re dog robbing parts off the production line from un reserved vehicles, which means someone else is waiting longer for their truck to finally arrive

That's crazy. There were a few folks on the Ford forum that had an issue, I forgot what it was but they were backordered and out for 1.5 months. FOMOCO made their payments.

I wouldn’t be too worried about the wastegate issue causing damage to the engine. If it’s stuck open it just won’t boost and if it’s stuck closed the engine will kill power (that’s why many are getting reduced power messages). I’m sure there is quick detection of a wastegate issue since ECM monitors wastegate command position and actual position.

Honestly between the forums and Facebook I’ve counted a lot of customers with this issue. If Toyota can’t get an understanding of what batch was bad and the affected trucks I’m going to go with the F150. Can’t wait months for the Tundra only to turn right back around and hand it to the dealership. Hope I can get some answers. Good luck to everyone having these issues.

Yep. I’m DONE with Toyota Financial. Though I appreciate their “legally separated” entities, the implied association is a reflection on the whole picture, which by circumstance requires a collaborative approach. Same reason we all use their financial arm; association. It’s a two way street “man!”

I think most people making that comment are the ones telling the people that were in denial that nothing wrong was going to happen because it’s Toyota. When you don’t change something for 14 years it better be reliable. Right now what’s happening to Toyota is what most forum numbers on here knocked the big 3 for.
