First oil change

4100 miles first oil change. 8.5 qts.

 

8.5 quarts is right in my book. And Rhino ramps really make it easy.

 

Maybe I'm just blinded by the chrome, but I only see 8 Qts.

 

Nice, changed mine at 5000 even and had Toyota service the rest. Good choice in oil, I have 6 gallons of it in my garage. Call it bougie oil if you will, I like taking care of my things. Both our vehicles take 0w-20 so it's easier to buy more at once.

 

So I just had the dealer do my 10k change at 9k. Early in mileage but the truck just hits a year old this week. Seems like a long time for a change.
So a few weeks ago I checked my oil cause the engine "smelled" hot or something just seemed off to me. Oil was down a quart. Now ususally I am religious about checking my oil but I can't recall how long its been, (getting old I guess),but the dealer just had it in October for the 5K check up and didn't add oil.
Should it have burned a quart?
You guys aren't going for the 10k recommended changes?
Also dealer notes say they put in 9 quarts.

 

Just starting with easy and that's making sure the truck was level side-to-side when you checked it.

I do 10K OCI and do it myself. 8.5 quarts hits the top line every time. I just did my 8th oil change. My 5.7 flex has never moved from the top line.

 

I do 5k oil changes. Never noticed the oil level dropping between oil changes. If your going to let just some oil change kid change your oil, and you going to worry about it. Check it when you first get home from the oil change. Then you would know if your loosing oil or if they undefiled it. Then check the oil every 1k or so.


And to Purerage how much does that oil. Cost per quart?

 

If there is one thing I have learned is, the dealer jiffy lube techs suck. My truck is a lease and did the oil change there twice, because it’s free (yeah right). I have decided to keep it with what’s going on with these ridiculous prices. Anyways I did an oil change 5k after the dealer had done it. Took the oil filter out and it seemed pretty black for only 5k. Did pay any attention to it. Fast forward another 5k and the filter is way cleaner than before. Take it for what it is but I was told sometimes they don’t change filter and use them for personal jobs. I will change my oil and do my maintenance till the day that I can’t no more. And yes I do 5k instead of 10k. My personal opinion is that they switch to 10k for EPA reasons. Just like they switched to 0w-20, for EPA/Cafe standards. I stick to 5w-30 and my engine is quieter and has more oil pressure.

I change mine every 5k or 1 year(covid really reduced my driving); but if it used a quart in 10k miles, I really wouldn't be worried about it if I had been driving it hard.
I like my mobil 1 0w-20 and a mobil 1 filter since you can get them cheap as a bundle from the parts stores.

 

Good to see it's not just the Tacoma forum that has this trend.

I personally like to run three catch cans and change my oil every 100 miles.

 

Dang, can you post a picture of all that oil that your catch cans catch? I feel like mine aren't doing much because it only has a tea spoon of oil in it.

 

Wow. Can't believe you would gamble on not having the 4th catch can. To each their own. That oil probably looks like ink after 100 miles. Should be changed with each start and stop of the engine to reduce the amount of metal shavings present. Can't have oil that's too clean or fresh.

 

5K for me. Oil/filter is cheap, engines not so much.

 

I have a 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k, and 25k maintenance check with Toyota care when I bought my truck. Only problem is they only change the oil every 10k. So I just change the oil when they don't, they do everything else including rotate the tires and inspections. Of course, I check everything over before I leave the lot, after 25k miles it will only see the dealer on larger things I don't have the tools for. Who knows, maybe I just need another tool haha.

Edit: I'm okay with it because I do prefer the Amsoil brand over what the dealer uses.

8.5 qts is spot on with a good drain. Great choice for oil, you are very good to that motor. Just did my second one at 1600 miles. First was at around 600 miles. Definitely some shiny stuff in the first one but second was super clean. I don’t drive it much so it’s more about time, but when I do drive it, I get on it. That 5.7 is awesome! I am OCD with maintenance and breaking in motors as well. I wanted the Amsoil because I believe it’s the best of the best especially for extended uses and overall hard to beat.IMHO. Spendy though, I went with Mobil 1. I get the appeal of free oil changes but it’s so easy to DIY and the peace of mind is worth a lot. Unfortunately, such a simple task at dealerships can cause owners a lot of grief. Good on you for DIY! Nice truck!

 

Thank you! Yeah I figure the maintenance is going to key in this case I plan on 500k miles and up. Won’t be trading in on a third gen ever lol.. LOVE the five 7!

If you’re doing regular scheduled oil changes, I’m sure there are plentiful of threads here that states where using Valvoline, Mobil1, or even Kirkland brand is more than sufficient for 3-5k interval changes.

Parts stores around here are not the cheapest option for oil. Since the OP never checked his oil I wonder if it was under filled from the factory.

Every vehicle I’ve ever owned for an extended period of time has used off the shelf full synthetic (usually Pennzoil) with a quality oil filter and 10k (or 1 year) oil change intervals. I’ve had one vehicle make 455k miles, 3 over 200k miles and 3 over 150k miles with no engine issues at all. Jeeps, GM’s, Yota’s, BMW’s and even a Ford Mustang. Not one engine failure. None of them smoke or have poor performance. All run like new. Paying $10+ a quart for magic oil is not happening for me. Cool product though.

Oh interesting, usually I can find a deal of 5qts and a filter for 38 bucks. Then I do a walmart order for the rest.
