My new-to-me Tundra just got its first annual registration renewal from the California DMV.

    Holy. F***ing. S**t.

    $767 for one year.

I feel like a broken record because I've posted this a few times, but in California your registration fee is so high due in part to it's value. As the vehicle ages, you should generally expect the registration to go down. Trucks are commercial vehicles in CA by default so they have an added weight fee. A few others with newer trucks in the $700 range here:

Don't feel bad. My first year was dang near 900 plus the 60 registration fee and 35 annual inspection. 3 years later I'm down to 350. This is in MA.

    Looks like he's in Minnesota.

FWIW - in my province, MN's neighbour to the north, we used to pay $60 a year for a 3000 kg registered gvwr, or 6600 pounds, which i thought was light, but thats what the dealer initially registered my truck for. However, our premier (provincial level leader) has stated annual licence fees are now to be zero for 3000 kg and under, starting tomorrow iirc. Nice little gift, until you remember it's an election year for him. Personally i'm waiting for the next shoe to drop, annual inspections, increased gas tax, etc. Though that's the other rub, maybe not so much for Cali, but compared to our MN neighbours. Our current gas price is close to $6.00 usd per gallon locally.

I think it's $65 in Ohio, annually. I'll probably buy 3 years out next time I have to update my registration. Not worry about it until 2026.

Lived in Texas for a few years and while the state tax and registration fees are almost nothing the highway and road conditions were embarrassing. A major highway would have potholes so massive we assumed the repair was when a car falls in the hole it will be plugged up so problem solved. I had to drive a lifted truck or suspension repairs would be 2K/year. Every time it snowed there were a million accidents since sending out the trucks to plow-sand-salt costs money. Dear God I'm not defending Crapafornia but living in AZ we see our tax dollars actually "sometimes" being spent on stuff taxpayers use.

It’s like that here in Maine. They base the excise off the sticker of the vehicle and dwindles a little every year.

You nailed it. It kinda averages out in most cases (except CA and a few others).

It might be awesome to pay 70.00 registration in TX, but if my home was in in TX the property taxes would be nuts.

    7190BB9E-3A5E-4877-9F44-CD3CD945DEEC.jpg

I pay 4200.00 in property taxes and would gladly pay 780.00 for tags than and extra 14000.00 in property taxes.

Does registration in Cali include excise tax or something? Registration in Mass is all the same for every vehicle but we pay excise based on value so as the vehicle depreciates the tax goes down, maybe similar in Cali with registration?

Yeah, that and my 10.85% sales tax and the almost $1,500 a month I pay in property taxes; the 11% income tax; and the nearly $7/gal for gas. There’s LOTS to love about this place, which is why I’m here even after having been throughout all fifty states. Twice. But for what we pay, the quality of our schools is atrocious, our roads are pathetic, and our crime is off the charts.

Our fees decline over time too. It’s based on a lot of things; the value of the vehicle is a big one. Commercial vehicles also pay significantly more. (Commercial includes all pickups - commercial is a style/vehicle design designation; it has nothing to do with how you use the vehicle). So I expected to pay a lot more than I did on my 4Runner. But I didn’t expect a $325 increase.

    Yeah forget that!
For all the flaws WA State has, my property tax is .87%, no state income tax and my vehicle registration stays a solid $110 every year.

Generally in most states, assessed value is a different term than market value. In Alabama, a residence market value would be $1,000,000 and assessed value would be $100,000 for example. Two different values, same house.
