Ohhhh man! After about 2 months of looking, and then another 3 weeks after putting down a deposit, my Tundra has arrived. I went base model with the SR CrewMax 4x4 and I have NO regrets. I'm upgrading from a 2012 4Runner, so even with the slightly smaller engine I'm still getting a HUGE upgrade in HP and towing capacity.

The stock "styled" steel wheels absolutely had to go, so I upgraded for some Dynos and AT tires and I could not be more happy. I think I was smiling in my sleep last night. It drives amazing, the base level sound system is really great and there is more than enough room for my family of 5. Only other cosmetic upgrades planned are some red inserts for the tailgate and front bumper Tundra logos, possibly some nerf bars and front window tint.

I've been all over this forum the last few weeks and thought I'd share my new ride with y'all. Can't believe it's finally here!!

With the 3rd gen Tundra, I'd say there's really nothing wrong with getting a base model aside from the engine tuning. It's crazy how well equipped it is...

With that being said, if I were you I'd keep an eye out for anything that could potentially de-detune your engine since it should be the exact same engine the SR5 has and you could stand to gain 51hp and 74lb-ft of torque. Which is a solid 11.8% increase in horsepower and 18.3% increase in torque.

    EDIT:

Oh, and of course, how could I forget the most important reason behind de-detuning the engine:

    8,300 vs 11,400 towing capacity (at least comparing a SR 4x2 Crew Max 5.5-Ft. Bed to a SR5 4x2 CrewMax 5.5-Ft. Bed) and that's a whopping 37.4% increase.

One could argue they spent money to make more money. The SR5 costs almost $5,000 more than the SR. If they spent $1mil on R&Ding the de-tune, and they make $1,000 more in profit with an SR5 over an SR, they only need to convince 1,000 people to get the SR5 over the SR due to the de-tune to make it worth it.

And those are very conservative numbers. I guarantee you they spent way less than that on R&D and probably make more than $1,000 more from an SR5 over an SR.

Love those rims. Where did you get them? I've been looking at some similar DX4 rims. Which one is that specifically? Truck looks great!

I would be really surprised if the power was the only reason for the lower tow rating. A 5.3L GM V8 can do ~12000 lbs with 355hp and 383 tq. An F150 Powerstroke can also do ~12000 lbs with 250 hp. A 2.7L Ecoboost can do 10100 lbs with 325 hp/400 torque.

It is either purely a marketing thing, or there are physical differences between the two(cooling system, axle, transmission, etc)

You very possibly could be correct. I guess the only way to really know would be to do a teardown and compare a SR to a SR5.

The only argument I can use to counter that would be this:

    upload_2022-4-4_14-17-45.jpg

The curb weight and GVWRs are identical. Which doesn't really mean anything, but it could.

I don't think they make that exact model in the 5 lug pattern for my Gen 2.5 but I have my eyes jn some that looks similar at Discounttiredirect.com

@Jmastro are the seats comfortable? I know the seats can’t go up and down in the SR and wondering what you think

Your truck got me interested in the SR and really there isn't anything that would be a deal breaker for me other than maybe the 32 gallon gas tank and fancier colors not being options.

I was worried about the lack of power seats and up/down adjustment, but that’s a non-issue. They are very comfortable.

thats exactly where I was. The reduced towing capacity is still a 3,300 lb increase for me coming from a 4Runner. Definitely limited on some trim packages, but I can live without a heated steering wheel haha. I wanted the Soft tec fabric seats, but the SR cloth is fine. The wheels were the only thing I knew had to go.

@Jmastro how much wind noise and road noise compared to your 4runner?

it’s not too loud, even on the highway. I put probably 100 miles on it before I upgraded tires and I was surprised bc I thought it would be louder. I didn’t go super aggressive on my AT tires for the same reason. I’d say the tundra is a tad louder than my 4Runner but not more than I was expecting.

not really, did the wheels and tires and that’s pretty much it. Still haven’t done tint and thinking about a Tonneau topper, it doesn’t need much man, I think I annoy my wife bc every time I walk outside I say “look at that truck!” Nothing else I really want to add to it.

I am curious if the transmission on the sr vs sr5 are cooled differently.
I don't need to tow more but I am curious if it is just the detune that drops the towing cap.

Speaking of tuning an engine. I just found out the Ero Land Cruiser 300 and the Lexus LX 600 have the same engine. However that setup is pushing out over 400 ponies.

I personally would rather have a more efficient tune that might result in less engine wear. But the thought of tunning 409 hp on my stock engine is an entertaining thought.IMG_20221230_142749.jpg

According to Mike Sweers, the SR and SR5 are mechanically identical. Only dif is a the detune and some other odds and ends like no fog lights, etc
