How Much Oil Do You Burn in Your 4.7 ?

I'm almost to 7K since my last oil change on a 2006 4.7 DC.
I used the factory filter, & Mobil 1 Synthetic 5/30.
I'm pretty damn sure I got it to the right level, (flat garage, cold motor etc.) when I did it. (may have missed something)
Heading on a road trip in the am, & I was about a 1/2+ quart low.
My driving habits aren't 'normal' . . . lots of stop & goes, good amount of 'idling', then semi-long road-trips pulling a small boat for around 600 + or - miles.
Just curious what others here are experiencing.

PS . . . Motor has 66700 miles on it.

Edit - oil on dipstick looked really clean, not that it means anything, but it's def. not sludged, black, or 'weird'. Truck runs 100%. Nothing funky.

Less than 10% loss of oil after 7K and no other symptoms. I'm surprised you noticed. I wouldn't. Maybe that's not normal but I would not know.

Had an 04, burned about a half court between oil changes. Think I read in the manual that was normal

Yeah…..original owner 160k now never burns oil.

That said my 2002 330i would do a qt between changes, no big deal keep an eye on it.

Check your pcv valve. A half quart is not terrible though. Not even bad for 7k

320k, No enough to be worth measuring at a normal 3K oil change....and its still light honey colored at oil changes. A half quart in 7K is....insanely good. Plenty of brand new cars consider 1 quart per K normal. Relax.

I use the same oil and filter as the OP, I change every 5K miles, usually about 18 months between changes with no noticeable oil use. I've never gone more than 5K though. But 1/2 quart in that amount of miles is fine in my book

I have a 2000, 4.7L 4X4 with over 240K miles on it. I use conventional oil and Toyota filters. Oil changes @ 3-5Kmiles. Burns absolutely NO oil. I drive mostly highway, about 35 miles a day, every day. (I like to change the PCV pretty regularly and use Lucas upper cylinder fuel treatment every other tank or so).

Never bothered to measure. I do know that instead of putting in the 6.5 quarts as stated in the owners manual during my 5k oil change, I use 7 instead if that matters.

Mine doesn't burn any that I can tell. Our 02 Corolla would burn a court every 3k but the Tundra and RAV4 do not.

I lost over half a full quart with my recent valve cover leak and I've got less than 2k since the last oil change, if you want some reference.

All your fluid levels, including oil, looked good before leaving on that 600 mile trip, correct :)
Being semi sarcastic....my youngest son, who was taught at young age to periodically check fluids, recently learned the hard way when not checking fluids before a trip to the coast.

I don't have an oil catch can on my Tundra, but when I had one on another vehicle, the fluid that accumulated was a mix of oil, water, and presumably combustion gases. It was horrible looking stuff... and nothing I would dump back into my crank case.:eek2:

My 06 4.7 with 167 k drops approximately 1/2 to 1 qt between changes at 18 months and 5k miles. I believe most maybe all that drop is due to valve cover leak. Last oil change i used valvoline high mileage oil. My plan is to go through another oil change to give the valve cover gaskets a chance to expand with the high mileage oil.

Tundra rain why not change the valve cover gasket’s? It’s super easy on these even if your just a little bit of a diy’er.

Practically no oil loss between annual 7k mile oil changes. Think my rear main seal might be a little leaky. Doesn't leave a drop on the floor so it doesn't count.

Our trucks are notoriously easy on oil. I would just check it every 3k or so, to be sure its not getting worse. PCV is a great idea, just swap it out as cheap as they are. I've done about 3k on mine with no loss of oil showing, that's with leaking valve cover gaskets I just changed. Now that I think about it, pretty sure mine is making oil

That reminds me yeah....I also have leaking valve covers, but I don't lose enough even with a known leak to be able to measure the loss between 3K oil changes.

If only my wife's subaru was that like that. Zero external oil leaks, but uses a quart every 300 miles.

Yeah, I checked it. Yup....thats how much it uses...Don't know what to do about it but buy another engine. I'll get around to it one of these days. As it is, oil is really cheap compared to engines so I'm in no hurry. Runs great otherwise.

    Sometimes more like 250.

Yes really. Its not something I'm super happy about, but like I said, with the choice being $3 of oil once a week vs buying a new engine and installing it I can live with the extra cost of buying a quart of oil with every tank of gas for now.

I don't actually know what is wrong with it, presumably ring issues or valve seals but either way a major repair to fix something that worst case costs about $150 extra a year to deal with.

Kinda puts oil consumption in perspective when you look at it like that. There is almost no oil leak or consumption that is actually worth fixing when you price it out.
